Van Gogh (Masters of Cinema) (Blu-ray) | Blu Ray | (30/09/2013)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP One of the greatest films by one of the finest directors of the second half of the 20th century Maurice Pialat's Van Gogh represents an ambitious and crowning achievement in its portrayal of the master painter's final weeks of life almost exactly one-hundred years earlier. Van Gogh depicted by the remarkable actor/songwriter-singer Jacques Dutronc (Godard's Sauve qui peut (la vie)) has arrived at Auvers-sur-Oise to come under the care of Dr. Gachet (Gérard Séty) for his nervous agitation. Soon after the arrival of Vincent's brother Théo (Bernard Le Coq) and his wife plein air portraiture and conviviality give way to the more crepuscular moods of brothels and cabarets and the painter's anguished existence tossing between money worries and an impassioned relationship with the doctor's teenage daughter finally meets its terminal scene. With its loosely factual and wholly inspired treatment of the last period of Van Gogh's life Pialat's film applies an impressionist touch to the biographical picture — indeed the filmmaker was himself an accomplished painter and the personal resonance of the subject matter results in an epic major late work. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Maurice Pialat's Van Gogh on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK and also in a special two-disc DVD edition. Special Features: Gorgeous new restoration of the film appearing in 1080p New and improved optional English subtitles Van Gogh (1965) — a short early documentary about the painter by Maurice Pialat A 10-minute video interview with Pialat from 1991 A 50-minute video interview with Pialat from 1992 Video interviews with actors Jacques Dutronc and Bernard Le Coq; director of photography Emmanuel Machuel; and editor Yann Dedet Deleted scenes Original theatrical trailer 56-Page Booklet containing a new and exclusive essay by critic Sabrina Marques; Jean-Luc Godard's letter to Pialat after seeing the film followed by Godard's tribute to Pialat upon the director's passing in 2003; copious newly translated interviews with Maurice Pialat; images of Pialat's canvasses; rare imagery; and more!

| RRP Based on the true story of Iwao Enokizu (Ken Ogata) and his murderous rampage which sparked a 78-day nationwide manhunt, Shhei Imamura’s disturbing gem 'Vengeance Is Mine' won every major award in Japan on the year of its release. Both seducing and repelling with its unusual story and grisly humour, mamura uncovers a seedy underbelly of civilised Japanese society. Unfolding through multiple flashbacks, Ogata delivers a career-defining performance as a day-labourer and smalltime con-artist who, after killing two of his co-workers, embarks on a psychopathic spree of rape and murder. Eluding the police and public, Japan’s infamous “King of Criminals” passes himself off as a Kyoto University professor, only to become entangled with an innkeeper and her perverted mother. Five years in the making, 'Vengeance Is Mine' transcends the imitations of run-of-the-mill criminal studies by presenting a portrait of a killer imbued with a poignant, tragic banality. Special Features: New 1080p Blu-ray encode in the film’s original aspect ratio New and improved optional English subtitle translation Audio commentary by noted critic and filmmaker Tony Rayns Video introduction by film director Alex Cox Original Japanese theatrical teaser and trailer (Blu-ray only) 56-Page Booklet featuring a 1994 interview with Imamura by Tichi Nakata, original promotional material, and a director’s statement

| RRP In 12 Strong, a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Hemsworth), is sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince a Northern Alliance General to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the team accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers, combining ancient strategies of cavalry warfare with twenty-first-century aerial bombardment technology to perform a seemingly impossible feat. Directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and based on the acclaimed Horse Soldiers book by best-selling author Doug Stanton, 12 STRONG also stars Michael Peña and Trevante Rhodes. Produced by legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer (the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Black Hawk Down), together with Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill (La La Land, Sicario). The screen play is written by Oscar winner Ted Tally (The Silence of the Lambs) and Peter Craig (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Parts 1 & 2).

Nine Queens | DVD | (27/01/2003)
from £20.00
| Saving you £-0.01 (N/A%)
| RRP If David Mamet had been born in Buenos Aires instead of Chicago, Nine Queens is most likely the kind of movie he'd be making. An intricate, playful scam caper, where not only the characters but we the audience are constantly trying to suss out who's screwing whom--and how, and why--it's a movie very much in the Mametian mould. But at the same time the Argentinian setting gives Fabian Bielinsky's debut feature a specifically Latin pungency and the urgent sense of a society teetering over a financial abyss. Which is all the more remarkable since, even though a key plot-point turns on a bank going bust, the movie was made a few months before the Argentinean economy went belly-up. The intrigue grips from the very outset as Juan, a young con artist, overreaches himself in a grocery store. He's rescued from disaster by Marcos, an older and more experienced grifter, who then takes him on in a master-pupil relationship. When the chance of a major coup involving some rare stamps (the Queens of the title) turns up, the partnership starts coming under strain; can either one really trust the other? And is either who he pretends to be? The plot suffers from a few implausibilities and loose ends, but sustains its momentum beguilingly. Ricardo Darín, as the saturnine Marcos, and Gastón Pauls as the fresh-faced, seemingly ingenuous Juan play off each other beautifully--but the dominant character is the seething, hustling city of Buenos Aires itself, where social mores are fluid and uncertain, and everybody has his eye out for the main chance. This is a society Bielinsky (who also scripted) clearly knows intimately, and like a true con-artist he makes shrewd use of his expertise to keep us guessing right up to the final twist. -Philip Kemp

Little Secrets | DVD | (13/01/2003)
from £7.60
| Saving you £12.39 (163.03%)
| RRP Little Secrets is a delightful cautionary tale about modern childhood. Blair Treu's film manages to be reassuring about the reality of a world in which kids are perceived to grow up too quickly, without patronising them about the scale and scope of the problems that preoccupy them. At 14, Emily (Evan Rachel Wood) has it all mapped out. Wise beyond her years, she is a musical prodigy who also runs a neat sideline keeping the secrets of the neighbourhood children for a small fee: broken china, kittens hidden in the bedroom, money stolen from dad's wallet to buy his own birthday present. These enjoyable scenes owe a huge debt to Peanuts. But Emily has a secret of her own, and over one cataclysmic summer the burden of this and all the others she is keeping on behalf of her friends becomes insupportable. Moralising is kept to a minimum as events resolve themselves in a dramatic way and saccharine levels are modest thanks to the determinedly unsentimental performances of Wood, David Gallagher and Michael Angarano. All told this is a pleasing family film of some quality. On the DVD: Little Secrets might be a small film, but it has a big picture feel, enhanced by the anamorphic widescreen presentation and a super-clear Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Extras include a good director's commentary in which Treu stresses the childish truths that make the story so touching, a short making-of documentary and a not particularly funny blooper reel. --Piers Ford
