  For Relic Hunter, star Tia Carrere was approached with the notion of playing "a female Indiana Jones". That perfectly sums up this tongue-in-cheek show. Each episode begins with a historical teaser depicting a relic in its original location and usage. It then gets stolen or lost and the team go hunt for it. Carrere's History Professor Sydney Fox is versed in arcane knowledge, but also knows how to hold her own in a fight. Her foppish assistant Nigel (Christien Anholt) always manages to bumble the search, but then gets helped out by office worker Claudia (Lindy Booth). That's the winning formula, and this first box set (which starts at the beginning of the second series) consists of six such scenarios. "The Put Back" requires the return of an artefact for a change, and sees the team in Africa racing to prevent the onset of an ancient curse. "Dagger of Death" concerns the Indian cult of Kali (per Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom). "Last of the Mochicas" (not a typo!) sees them survive a plane crash and then play a game of sleuthing to discover which other passenger is their enemy. "The Legend of the Lost" provides a well-intentioned message about why lost civilisations ought to be left lost. "Fertile Ground" comically takes Sydney from her high-school reunion to Hawaii in a partnership with her teenage sweetheart. "Gypsy Jigsaw" finally allows Claudia to shine, with her knowledge of Tarot assisting in a jaunt to Romania. All six feature terrific location shooting from around the globe and are an infectious introduction for anyone who missed the sporadic TV broadcasts. On the DVD: Relic Hunter comes to disc with the original 16:9 widescreen ratio of the show. Shame there's only a stereo mix, though. There are 12-minute interviews with stars Carrere and Anholt that are a little more informative than the biographies included. Lastly, there's a gallery of 24 behind-the-scenes and promotional stills. --Paul Tonks

  Lou Diamond Phillips leaves a haunting impression in La Bambaas the late 1950s pop idol Ritchie Valens, who made the Latino influence in rock & roll conspicuous through his hit songs. Filmmaker Luis Valdez (Zoot Suit) creates a nimble, exciting, and sympathetic portrait of the boy driven to rise above obstacles of race and family legacy, and Esai Morales is equally fine as Ritchie's envious, searching brother. Great support from Elizabeth Pena and Danielle von Zerneck as Valens's sister and mother, respectively, and Joe Pantoliano is solid as the singer's straight-talking manager. Valdez brightens up the third act with a rock & roll show featuring, among others, Brian Setzer as Eddie Cochrane. Marshall Crenshaw turns up as Buddy Holly getting on that plane with Valens, and Los Lobos (who actually performs Valens's music on the soundtrack) has a nifty cameo as a Tijuana band that gives Valens a piece of crucial inspiration. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Kill Bill is not just for movie anoraks complete with all the super-smooth tunes that you'd expect from a Tarantino soundtrack it's definitely the most outrageously entertaining film yet from cinema's king of cool! Kill Bill 2 (2004): The second part of Quentin Tarantino's deliriously stylish movie as The Bride (Thurman) continues her typically blood-soaked revenge quest... Having killed two of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad The Bride continues her mission to avenge the three remaining names on her death list that turned her El Paso wedding party into bloody carnage and left her for dead. Her attention turns to Budd (Michael Madson) Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) and finally the corpse littered path leads to Bill (David Carradine). However an unexpected survivor complicates matters...

  The Red Squirrel sees Jota, an ex-pop star with a penchant for doing nothing very much, standing on a bridge contemplating suicide. He’s pulled back to reality by a dramatic motorcycle accident and goes to help the victim, an attractive young woman apparently physically unscathed but with severe amnesia. At the hospital he is assumed to be her boyfriend, and so the deception begins, as he invents everything from her name (Lisa) through to the details of their imaginary four-year relationship. Though based on a lie, it gradually becomes real but is Lisa really an amnesiac or is she deceiving the deceiver? Who is the mysterious Felix, leaving pleas on a late-night radio programme to his missing, mentally disturbed 25-year-old wife, Sofia? As an array of incidental characters get drawn in, each seems to be practising their own deceit. This is a beautifully wrought, endlessly thought-provoking film, complemented by Alberto Iglesias's fabulous score. The two leads are superb: as Jota, Nancho Nova is both fey and hypnotic while Elisa (Emma Suárez) is wonderfully whimsical. Not surprisingly, it garnered a whole heap of awards, from Best Foreign Film at Cannes to Best Score at the Goya Awards. And the significance of the title? Red squirrels are, apparently, quick and cunning creatures; just like human beings. On the DVD: The Red Squirrel is presented in Dolby Digital original Spanish soundtrack with option of English subtitles and anamorphic widescreen print. The usual stuff is on offer as special features, including trailers for other world cinema films, filmographies of the director and two leading characters, and a concise but considered analysis of the plot.--Harriet Smith
