| RRP Released amidst rumours of romance between co-stars Angelina Jolie and soon-to-be-divorced Brad Pitt, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers automatic weapons and high explosives as the cure for marital boredom. The premise of this exhausting action-comedy (no relation to the Alfred Hitchcock comedy starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery) is that the unhappily married Smiths (Pitt and Jolie) will improve their relationship once they discover their mutually-hidden identities as world-class assassins, but things get complicated when their secret-agency bosses order them to rub each other out. There's plenty of amusing banter in the otherwise disposable screenplay by Simon Kinberg (xXx: State of the Union, Fantastic Four), and director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) gives Pitt and Jolie a slick, glossy superstar showcase that's innocuous but certainly never boring. It could've been better, but as an action-packed summer confection, Mr. and Mrs. Smith kills two hours in high style. --Jeff Shannon

| RRP Down Time is a strange attempt to mix concrete Northern social realism and Bruce-Willis-style cliffhanger thrills, with balls of fire billowing up empty lift shafts and so forth. Paul McGann plays an ex-police psychologist, retired through ill health, drafted in to dissuade miserable single mother Chrissy (Susan Lynch) from throwing herself and her child off the top of a tower block. He succeeds, though in so doing betrays some of the problems that caused him to quit his job. He then pursues Chrissy romantically, during the course of which he, she and her little boy become stuck in the tower block lift, which then starts ascending and descending at random when hoodlum squatters break into the control box and mess about with it for an idle laugh. With its bizarre and somewhat improbable scenario, its odd mix of whimsical light romance, grim-up-North-style melodrama and explosive stunt action, Down Time as a whole doesn't really come off. The behaviour of key characters borders on the arbitrary, the "yobs" who cause all the problems go curiously unpunished and the ending barely makes sense. However, the lengthy mid-sequence in which McGann rescues (and is rescued by) Chrissy from the perilously dangling lift is, though predictable in its outcome, gripping enough. --David Stubbs

As notorious former members of the anti-Alliance opposition Mal and his crew make it difficult for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything goes completely awry when a government assassin is sent to retrieve River. As Mal is forced to choose between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newcomers it becomes apparent that River harbors both a dangerous secret and astounding fighting powers and Mal decides that discovering the truth about what she knows might just be worth his time. Many of the film's action sequences revolve around Summer Glau's martial arts skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her role with Hong Kong stuntwoman Ming Lu as well as stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda and as a result performed nearly all the stuntwork herself. | RRP Recorded live at the Jazz Open in Stuttgart in 1994, ESP 2: A Tribute to Miles features former members of Miles Davis bands reunited for the second time since his death in 1991. Over the course of his career, Davis led bands that included, among others, John Coltrane, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans. While the players here are frighteningly proficient, none of them are quite of that calibre and their dress sense certainly doesn't measure up to their forbears: ESP 2 are a mess of ballooning trousers and garishly mismatched shirts. It falls to saxophonist David McMurray to take the lead. Respectfully, no one replaces Miles Davis on the horn, though his familiar, muted trumpet sounds do feature on "Desiree's Desire", replicated hauntingly on sampled keyboards as if broadcast from the hereafter. The "Opening Medley" is the best thing here, recalling the frenetic crosstown fusion fury of Miles early 70s work. Occasionally, ESP 2 are guilty of lapsing into the somnambulant jazz-funk blandness that characterised Miles last work. Still there are fitful moments of beauty here--the sepulchral ambience of "Blue n Green", for example--which distinguish this from a mere session musicians' workout, while "The Man with the Horn" affords an interlude of soulful warmth, courtesy of guest vocalist Carla Cook. Otherwise the band are as self-absorbed and uncommunicative as Davis himself notoriously was. On the DVD: A Tribute to Miles comes to disc with no extra features. The digital 5.1 soundtrack is clear as cut-glass, however, while the video aspect ratio is 4:3. --David Stubbs
