Two of the high-priests of horror directors George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead Monkey Shines) and Dario Argento (Tenebre Phenomena) each pay tribute to Edgar Allan Poe with screen adaptions of the master's most terrifying tales from the dark side. Romero's shock-filled story (The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar) centres on a greedy young wife's bid to trick her dying husband out of his millions and the terror that is unleashed when mysterious beings take possession of the old man's body. The inspiration for Argento's blood-curdling tale is Poe's The Black Cat. Skilfully grafting in chilling scenes from several of Poe's other classic stories Argento's trip into terror tells of a man's cruel obsession with his wife's cat that finally drives him to murder of the most gruesome kind.

Eliot Green is turning 13 and about to undergo one of the great rituals of Judaism: the Bar Mitzvah, when a boy becomes a man, and the party that celebrates it is the event of a lifetime. To Eliot’s mother, Rita, it’s a grand stage on which to present the accomplishments of her family to a waiting world. To her husband Victor, it’s an expensive party, getting more expensive every day. To Lesley, his sister, it means endless responsibility and pouring oil like a troubled daughter. To Grandad Wax it’s tradition. And to Rabbi Sherman it’s another Shabbat, another Bar Mitzvah over and time to put his feet up - or so he thinks... Witty, insightful, rich in irony and human observation, Bar Mitzvah Boy stands as one of Jack Rosenthal’s most famous and most popular plays, rich in universal humour and creating, in young Eliot and his mother, their friends and relatives, some of his most memorable characters.. • Randall And Hopkirk Deceased - Complete [1969]Randall And Hopkirk Deceased - Complete | DVD | (07/10/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £69.99

The twist of private-eye show Randall & Hopkirk Deceased is that in the first episode, gumshoe Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) is killed off by the villains, only to pop up in an immaculate white suit as a ghost visible only to his hardboiled partner Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt). In theory, the supernatural streak--which meant a complex set of rules about Marty's appearances and effects on the physical world--should lead the show into wilder territory, but most episodes squander the team's unique abilities on ordinary cases about blackmail and murder-for-profit. A persistent subplot has the living Jeff getting cosy with the dead Marty's widow Jean (Annette Andre) to the discomfort of her late husband. The elementary effects and the nice underplaying of the leads have a certain period charm, and the show could afford a high calibre of special guest villains and dolly birds. A 1990s remake with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer hasn't obliterated memories of the original. --Kim Newman
