  A series that's as much about one as the other, the wonderfully funny, touching and utterly genuine Sex and the City dares to portray real adults in a thoroughly realistic environment. Filmed in and around the streets of Manhattan, the show brings New York life--and specifically singles life--alive as no other has done before. Like its HBO stablemate The Sopranos, this is TV for grown-ups: frank and non-patronising, dizzyingly well written and devastatingly accurate in its characterisations. Sarah Jessica Parker plays Carrie Bradshaw, Manhattan's "sexual anthropologist" whose weekly newspaper column gives the series its title. Kristen Davis, Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon are her acerbic, cynical, thirtysomething singleton pals: gossip, sex, men, shoes, shopping, sex, designer clothes, fashion and sex dominate their affluent yet incomprehensibly empty lifestyles as they move from swanky restaurant opening to night club to art exhibition in the relentless pursuit of fulfilment and validation. Conspicuously, the men in their lives--from "toxic bachelors" to "modelisers" and beyond--fail to provide either, leaving the women to pick up the pieces after each shattered relationship. Adapted from Candace Bushnell's bestseller, in the first season Carrie embarks on her long and tortuous liaison with "Mr Big" and watches wryly as her pals seek solace with various members of the male sex, electric appliances and even, disastrously yet briefly, celibacy. On the DVD: Fortunately, 12 outstanding episodes are their own selling point here, since the presentation of these two discs leaves something to be desired. Although Region 2 encoded, inexcusably the broadcast format is American NTSC not PAL, so if you don't have a reasonably modern TV you'll have trouble playing the discs in the first place; there's a tiny promo feature and teaser trailers, plus cast biographies and synopses that pop up at the beginning of every episode. The interface lacks a "Play All" facility, forcing you to skip back and forth from the main menu after each episode. Add to that some pretty nasty packaging and this set won't win any prizes for presentation. But the shows themselves are a constant delight: anyone who's ever dated or been dumped should own this set. --Mark Walker

  This 13-disc set is at least the third massive DVD collection with the Oliver Stone moniker. New to this set are two documentaries: Looking for Fidel (2004), Stone's second film shadowing the Cuban leader, focusing on the regime's iron-fisted defector policy. Persona Non Grata (2003) is an examination of Palestinian conflict. Both of the films have a constantly moving camera, giving us a you-are-there feel to the subjects including Stone, who is seen often. His warts and all interviews are certainly a different type than the usual newsmagazines and are especially interesting in Non Grata since we've seen too many cut-and-dried interviews with these players over the years. The main theatrical films on single discs have been released before although several of them have been released previously with more content and bonus discs, creating a debate on how "ultimate" this collection is. Otherwise, all his films are here, from his Vietnam trilogy (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven & Earth), his iconic pop culture films (The Doors, Wall Street, Any Given Sunday), experimental films (Natural Born Killers, U-Turn, Talk Radio), and political operas (JFK, Nixon, Salvador), plus the documentary Oliver Stone's America. --Doug Thomas

  The granddaddy of giant monster movies, The Lost World was one of the most expensive movies ever made in 1925, costing more than a million dollars, and has remained one of the most influential. Every larger-than-life creature feature since--from King Kong to Godzilla and Jurassic Park--owes a debt to this original adventure fantasy based on Arthur Conan Doyle's novel. It's the story of a maverick scientist (Wallace Beery under a bushy beard) who finds a land that time forgot on a plateau deep within the South American jungles and comes back to London with a captured brontosaurus to prove it. His expedition includes Bessie Love, the daughter of an explorer who disappeared on the previous expedition, and big game hunter Lewis Stone. The ostensible stars of the picture are all upstaged by Willis O'Brien's dinosaurs, simple models brought to life with primitive stop-motion animation (the technique was soon to be perfected by O'Brien for King Kong). Hardly realistic by any measure, these pioneering special effects are still a sight to behold, especially the lumbering brontosaurus which receives the most care from O'Brien, both foraging in his jungle and rampaging through the streets of London. With the coming of talkies, The Lost World became obsolete: all known American prints were destroyed in favour of a sound remake (which became King Kong) and the film only survived in a severely truncated form (even the original negative was lost). For this release David Shepard meticulously "rebuilt" the film using material from eight different surviving prints from all over the world, cleaning and restoring along the way. The result is 50% longer than previously extant prints, still not complete but closer than any version since its 1925 debut. The difference is not merely in restored scenes but in a rediscovered sense of grace in scenes filled out to their original detail and pace. The film moves and breathes once again like a silent film. On the DVD: From the attractive solid slipcase to the wonderful "period" menu interface, this is a delightful DVD package. The film itself looks surprisingly good--a real tribute to the restoration team's efforts--with careful tinting in the style of the period (blues for evening, reds for dawn etc.). The disc features the choice of either an original score by The Alloy Orchestra or a classical orchestral score compiled and conducted by Robert Israel (both enjoyable and effective), 13 minutes of O'Brien's animation outtakes (including a couple of isolated frames that capture O'Brien manipulating his models) and a well-meaning but basic commentary by Arthur Conan Doyle historian Roy Pilot.   This value-for-money Zombie Double Feature is billed as "Flesh Creepers, Volume 1", and offers a double billing of George A Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Steve Sekely’s rather less fondly remembered Revenge of the Zombies (1943). Night of the Living Dead is a masterpiece, but it has also slipped through a copyright loophole which means it has been issued on video and DVD by a great many distributors in as many variant versions. This one isn’t ruined by colorisation or dodgy new footage as a couple of rival releases are, but it is soft-looking print, free of censor cuts but very washed-out-looking. The background notes inexcusably get the date of the film wrong, crassly tagging it "think Blair Witch 1964", and mention the existence of extras-filled special DVD editions, which rather rubs in the fact that this no-frills effort has none of the commentaries or documentaries found on other releases. Revenge of the Zombies is a sluggish hour-long wartime B-picture, with John Carradine underplaying for once as a Nazi scientist creating an army of zombies (ie: a handful of shuffling extras) in the Louisiana swamplands. Comedy relief Mantan Moreland has the best moments and the trudging-around-the-backlot zombies ("things walkin’ ain’t got no business to be walkin’") are fun, but it isn’t especially good of its kind. On the DVD: The Zombie Double Feature presents both films in "horrorscope", which means letterboxing and blurry image. The only extra is a list-like essay about the habits of flesh-eating zombies in Romero films.--Kim Newman
