Martin Scorsese's The Aviator is a lavish spectacle of a motion picture that harkens back to Hollywood's Golden Era in telling the story of Howard Hughes, one of 20th-century America's most pioneering and influential figures. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric billionaire, Scorsese's biopic concentrates on Hughes's life between the 1920s and the 1940s, when he made some of his most striking contributions to both the film and aviation industries. At only 25 years of age, Hughes directed the most expensive film ever made up to that point, Hell's Angels (1930), which Scorsese gleefully recreates here in all its sprawling, audacious glory. At the same time, he became known as an unabashed playboy, bedding the likes of Jean Harlow (played by Gwen Stefani), Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale), and Katherine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett). In the mid-'30s, he turned his attention to the aviation industry, where he quickly became a world-renowned celebrity for shattering speed and distance records. He also continued to test the limits of flight technology, building bigger, faster, and stronger aircrafts. All the while, he struggled with an obsessive-compulsive mental disorder that sent him into a full-fledged tailspin after a near-fatal plane crash. The film concludes with Hughes being called to the Senate in '47 to defend himself against nefarious Senator Owen Brewster (Alan Alda), who accused Hughes of taking money from the United States government during wartime.* Please note: Martin Scorsese colour tinted some of his scenes to add authenticity to the era represented in the film and in keeping with Technicolor at that time. You may notice a lack of the colour green in some scenes as well. This was done deliberately and is not a fault of your DVD. Thank you.

Another masked avenger is reincarnated as a big budget movie. Idle playboy Lamont Cranston (Alec Baldwin), schooled in Tibetan mysticism, fights crime in late '30s New York while wearing a natty hat and false beak. He finds time to romance telepathic sweetie Margo Lane (Penelope Miller), whose crusty old scientist Dad (Ian McKellen) has just invented an atom bomb which is in danger of falling into the hands of Shiwan Khan (John Lone), conquest-happy last descendent of Genghis Khan.Director Russell Mulcahy turns out the regulation death traps (a locked chamber filling with water, a bomb timer which ticks away during the climax) and the Shadow breezes through via nifty "invisible" effects. It evokes the conventions and charms of 1930s' pulp fiction in rather more nostalgic mode than Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, and adds little of its own attitude, although a sly camp sensibility (notably in the extremely chi-chi Tim Curry and John Lone as the villains) goes for snickering at the expense of tension. A pleasant, eye-pleasing movie but, after the super-heroic likes of Batman, The Crow and The Mask, the merely mysterious Shadow seems somewhat grandfatherly and remote. --Kim Newman

When Rafe returns alive the three find themselves in an uncomfortable personal situation that is soon engulfed by the massive surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Putting aside their differences Rafe and Danny join the desperate fight against the enemy invaders. The film's epic sweep intertwines Rafe and Danny's stories with the heroic efforts of such characters as Dorrie Miller (Cuba Gooding Jr.) a ship's cook turned fighter Earl (Tom Sizemore) a courageous base mechanic and Jimmy Doolittle (Alec Baldwin) the visionary pilot who would lead one of America's most famous counterattacks of the war. Dan Aykroyd also appears as the code breaking Captain Thurman and Jon Voight as President Franklin Roosevelt.

THE HOLLYWOOD COLLECTION GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS AL PACINO HEADS A STUNNING STAR-STUDDED CAST... Close the deal...or you re history. The stakes couldn t be higher for four desperate Chicago real-estate salesmen: close the deal or lose your job. David Mamet s famously profanity-laden screenplay based on his own Pulitzer Prize-winning play ferociously nails the dog-eat-dog world where lies, flattery, threats, theft and bribery rule supreme as the four salesman scrabble to thrash the opposition and keep their livelihoods. But who will survive? Will it be top closer Ricky Roma? Has-been Shelley The Machine Levene? Timid no-hoper George Aaronow? Big-mouth Dave Moss? Or does ruthless office manager Williamson hold all the trump cards? Al Pacino, who earned both Academy Award® and Golden Globe® nominations for his powerhouse performance, heads a fabulous cast of big-name stellar talent, including Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Jonathan Pryce and Jack Lemmon (who won the Volpi Cup - Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival). JULIA Fred Zinnemann's last great movie. Based on part of Lillian Hellman's memoir, the film stars Jane Fonda as Hellman as she recounts her friendship with the enigmatic JULIA, played by Vanessa Redgrave. Fonda gives a gutsy performance, playing well with Redgrave and, to a greater degree, Jason Robards, who plays Dashell Hammett. Alvin Sargent's screenplay cleverly bends time, jumping back and forth as the story of Hellman's friendship with Julia is told and Zinnemann creates a melancholy feel that's sustained throughout. The excellent music by Georges Delerue is haunting and the cinematography by Douglas Slocombe is beautiful. The supporting cast features Meryl Streep as Anne Marie, Maximillian Schell as Johann, Cathleen Nesbitt as Julia's grandmother, Rosemary Murphy as Dorothy Parker and Hal Holbrook as Parker's husband Alan Campbell. THE LONG HOT SUMMER Paul Newman plays Ben Quick, the mysterious drifter who stirs up a town and its women when he hitches up in Frenchman s Bend, Mississippi, where life is dominated by elderly patriarch Will Varner (Orson Welles). Will s daughter Clara (Joanne Woodward) and son Jody (Anthony Franciosa) are a disappointment to him. While Jody spends his time fooling around with his alluring wife, Eula (Lee Remick), the strong-willed Clara is courted by Alan Stewart (Richard Anderson), a milquetoast mama s boy. Will himself is resisting being pressured into marriage by his long-term mistress Minnie (Angela Lansbury), but he sees in Ben the passion and drive that Jody lacks. He invites Ben to live with the family, and Ben launches a relentless campaign to break Clara s will and win her heart. This proves the final straw for Jody, who is driven to desperate measures to prove his manhood a situation that sparks both deadly danger and shocking revelations over the course of one long, hot summer.
