What Have I Done To Deserve This? is a perfect example of director Pedro Almodóvar's earlier work, containing all the elements which earned his films a cult international following. Starring the incomparable Carmen Marua as Gloria, a prescription drug addicted mother battling to make sense of her life and family as the world around her goes crazy. Intelligent, offensive, risqué, hilarious, eccentric, ironic, compelling, sad and sext, this early film shows Almodóvar's genius at it's more raw and untamed, his explosive energy shining through right to the last frame. An underrated little picture, Real Genius offers a rare college comedy that doesn't rely on gross-out humour as well as a look at Val Kilmer before he turned into a star. A high school whiz kid (Gabriel Jarret) arrives at a brainy college, where the crème de la crème of the science students are marshalled under an ambitious professor (expert villain William Atherton). Unbeknown to them, the kids are working on a weapons system that the prof. plans on selling to the government. The star student and chief rabble-rouser is played by Kilmer, in good early form as a cocky genius who hasn't lost touch with his goofy side. The director is Martha Coolidge, whose Valley Girl was one of the brightest (and most unexpected) of 1980s comedies; she keeps the movie perking along and never worries about dumbing down a film that just happens to be about smart people. --Robert Horton

When his socially adept brother Herman pays an unexpected visit the introverted Jacobo prefers to lie rather than admit his bachelor status asking the dour but obliging Ma

  • The Orphanage [Blu-ray]The Orphanage | Blu Ray | (30/11/2015) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Backed by Guillermo del Toro and yet made by a surprisingly inexperienced group of film makers (especially considering the end result), The Orphanage is a chilling, tense supernatural thriller that could certainly teach more established directors a thing or two about how to send shivers down the spine. It tells the story of a woman, Laura, returning to the orphanage where she was raised as a child. Her plans are to look after sick children there, but it doesn’t take long for things to go awry. Without giving too much away, visions from her past and a threat to her own family are the starting points for a complex and quite haunting thriller, that stays in the mind long after the credits have rolled. A film that works on more than one level, The Orphanage really is some piece of work. Juan Antonia Bayona, behind the camera, generates an incredibly atmospheric mood that underpins the film, and wisely takes time to put pieces in place. He’s aided by a terrific cast, and an unsettling screenplay that layers in an uneasy horror that’s as anti-Hollywood as it comes. The result of all of this is one of the scariest films of recent times, and yet something that still manages to be that little bit more, that sticks in your mind for some time afterwards. Make no mistake, The Orphanage really is something different, and all the better for it. --Jon Foster

This portrait celebrates the extraordinary quest of Andres Segovia the Andalusian par excellence who in his childhood fell in love with the sounds of the Spanish guitar and within 20 years had elevated it from the status of a folk instrument to the highest levels of the international concert platform. His achievement is among the marvels of Western music. The two very different Christopher Nupen films on this DVD are Segovia at Los Olivos shot in Segovia's new home on the Costa del Sol in Andalucia in 1967 when he was 75 and thought by Segovia to be the best thing he ever did for television and the prize-winning Andre Segovia: The Song of the Guitar filmed in Granada and the Palaces of the Alhambra in 1976 when the Grand Master was 84.
