  A collection of seven films starring Elvis Presley. Elvis made his acting debut in Love Me Tender (1956), starring as a young Texan farmer who, upon hearing of his older brother (Richard Egan)'s death in the Civil War, marries his sweetheart (Debra Paget). When the older brother returns from the war alive and well, a bitter feud between the siblings begins. In Flaming Star (1960), Presley plays the son of a white rancher (John McIntire) and a Kiowa Indian (Dolores del Rio) who finds himself caught between the settlers and the Kiowas when his mother's people go on the warpath. Attempting to act as peacemaker, he only becomes embroiled in the violence. In Wild in the Country (1961), country delinquent Glenn Tyler (Presley) is paroled into his uncle's care on the condition that he pays weekly visits to widowed psychiatrist Irene Sperry (Hope Lange). She discovers that Glenn is a talented writer and encourages him to attend college. Meanwhile, Glenn is simultaneously dating the pushy Noreen (Tuesday Weld) and the more reserved Betty Lee Parsons (Millie Perkins). In Follow That Dream (1961), Toby Kwimper (Presley) and his wandering family set up home in Florida but find themselves menaced by local hoods. Toby also has to escape the advances of a tenacious social worker, who has more on her mind than just his health and welfare. In Kid Galahad (1962), a remake of the 1937 feature film, Walter Gulick (Presley) is a garage mechanic who is inadvertently drawn into the world of professional boxing. He has to free himself from the clutches of a gambler (Gig Young) who is attempting to manipulate him. In 'Frankie and Johnny' (1966), Frankie (Donna Douglas) is a riverboat entertainer who despairs of her gambling singing partner Johnny (Presley) but is too much in love with him to end their relationship. Finally, in Clambake (1967), Scott Heywood (Presley), an heir to millions, switches places with a ski instructor to learn about everyday life and competes with a wealthy playboy (Bill Bixby) to attract a beautiful co-ed (Shelley Fabares).

  Peter Greenaway (The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Drowning by Numbers) continues to delight and disturb us with his talent for combining storytelling with optic artistry. The Pillow Book is divided into 10 chapters (consistent with Greenaway's love of numbers and lists) and is shot to be viewed like a book, complete with tantalising illustrations and footnotes (subtitles) and using television's "screen-in-screen" technology. As a child in Japan, Nagiko's father celebrates her birthday retelling the Japanese creation myth and writing on her flesh in beautiful calligraphy, while her aunt reads a list of "beautiful things" from a 10th-century pillow book. As she gets older, Nagiko (Vivian Wu) looks for a lover with calligraphy skills to continue the annual ritual. She is initially thrilled when she encounters Jerome (Ewan McGregor), a bisexual translator who can speak and write several languages, but soon realises that although he is a magnificent lover, his penmanship is less than acceptable. When Nagiko dismisses the enamoured Jerome, he suggests she use his flesh as the pages which to present her own pillow book. The film, complete with a musical score as international as the languages used in the narration, is visually hypnotic and truly an immense "work of art". --Michele Goodson

  The Elvis formula was well in place by the time of 1964's Roustabout, a concoction of undistinguished songs (anyone remember "Poison Ivy League"?), pretty girls, tight pants, a colourful setting and a little bit of karate to prove that Elvis really had been studying his martial arts. With that understood, Roustabout is a better-than-average work-out for the King--not as peppy as Viva Las Vegas, but a good deal livelier than the sleepwalking It Happened at the World's Fair. Elvis plays a bad-boy singer roaming the highways on his Japanese motorcycle; laid up after an accident, he joins a carnival owned by the feisty Barbara Stanwyck. ("This is not a circus, it's a carnival. There's a big difference.") The cast goes from high to low: both giant-sized future James Bond villain Richard Kiel and tiny Billy Barty are carny regulars, and Raquel Welch has a small role in the opening scene. Teri Garr is one of the carnival dancers behind Elvis. The legendary costume designer Edith Head puts Elvis in a series of snappy windbreakers, but thank goodness he's also in black leather a lot. As if that weren't enough to recommend it, the movie has a sequence involving Elvis riding a cycle inside the "Wall of Death", a huge wooden cylinder with high walls. This bit actually inspired an entire Irish film in 1986, Eat the Peach, in which friends build a similar contraption after they watch Roustabout on tape. --Robert Horton
