Even before he steps out onto the stage, the audience is on its feet clapping and screaming for Barry Manilow in Manilow Live!, which was filmed in Nashville in February 2000. Walking out and launching into "Could it Be Magic?" Manilow proves his pipes are as strong and clear as ever and his suits still as dapper. He promises "beautiful melodies, passionate lyrics, great grooves, and maybe even some swivelling hips", to the delight of the sold-out house. A consummate showman, Manilow performs 24 of his biggest hits accompanied by full orchestra. During "Can't Smile Without You", the audience holds up signs bearing smiley faces, hearts, and "ME" in hopes that the singer will pick them for his traditional duet. "Bandstand Boogie," the long-time theme song for American Bandstand, rocks the house, then Manilow brings it down for perennial favourite, "Mandy", which segues into "Even Now". His timing is impeccable, and he knows exactly how to work the adoring crowd. The accordion interlude is particularly amusing, as is "Flight of the Bumblebee" played on a kazoo. Mixing pop, jazz, disco and big band, Manilow moves smoothly through the two-hour set, alternately sitting at the piano or standing at the mike. The bluesy "That's Life" gets an infusion of energy from audience participation, and "Copacabana" is just as infectious as ever (with Manilow doing a little of that hip-swivelling). Ending with a heartfelt encore of "Stars in the Night", Manilow Live! is a must-have for fans. --Dana Van Nest, Amazon.com

First And Farewell celebrates the music career of one of showbusiness' brightest and most enduring stars Barry Manilow. The film begins appropriately enough with a section entitled 'The First' which contains previously unseen footage of the crooner rehearsing before his 1974 concert in New York as well as his debut performance of the 'Commercial Medley' a mix of Manilow-penned advertising jingles. This segues neatly into the film's second half called simply 'The Farewell'. Here you'll find his 2004 farewell tour One Night Live One Last Time! recorded at The Pond in Anaheim. And so the Manilow saga comes full circle with a collection of memorable performances of some of his greatest hits.
My Favourite Broadway--The Love Songs, the follow-up to 1998's My Favourite Broadway--The Leading Ladies, allows the gentlemen in, but that's not always an advantage. Sure, Michael Crawford developed a great following as the Phantom and Nathan Lane is a comedian nonpareil, but Tom Wopat, Brent Spiner, Peter Gallagher, Adam Pascal, and Ron Raines, while all fine performers with good career histories, simply can't match the marquee power of the original's Liza Minnelli, Audra McDonald, Jennifer Holliday, Nell Carter, and many others. And even when old-timers appear, Robert Goulet seems closer to Las Vegas than Lancelot, and Barry Manilow (mostly making his name as a composer these days) looks pretty awkward. That said, this is still an enjoyable live show from New York's City Centre. Among the ladies returning, Rebecca Luker and Marin Mazzie shine in songs from the revivals they star in, and super diva Linda Eder raises the roof with a three-song medley. And there are other additions to the roster, one legend, Chita Rivera (reprising her "English Teacher" from Bye Bye Birdie), and one up-and-comer, Heather Headley (sharing her "Elaborate Lives" duet with Aida co-star Pascal). But the first 100 minutes is all prologue, anyway. The real star is the host, Julie Andrews, who also hosted the original show and conspicuously did not sing in it, following her infamous, lawsuit-laden vocal-chord surgery that effectively ended her music career. Throughout the evening she teases the audience, reciting lyrics and making references to My Fair Lady. So when Crawford begins the finale "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" and Andrews enters, the audience holds its breath: Will she or won't she? It's an electric moment, and perfect theatre. --David Horiuchi, Amazon.com
