Andrew Bergmans tongue-in-cheek comedy The Freshman keeps the spoofing low key, underplaying the outrageous situations even as he piles them higher. Marlon Brando lets everyone know hes in on the joke with his hammy, good-humoured performance as the bulldog-jowled Mafioso Carmine Sabatini, the man Clarks prissy, self-important professor swears was the real-life inspiration for Don Corleone. Carmine has a modest proposal for the naive kid from Vermont involving Carmines gorgeous daughter Tina (Penelope Ann Miller) and the illegal importing of an endangered lizard. And if the sight of a six-foot-long lizard scattering shoppers as it runs wild through a New York City mall doesnt do it for you, theres always Bert Parks rousing rendition of Bob Dylans "Maggies Farm".--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
In the first Prime Suspect, Helen Mirren's ballsy woman Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennyson battled the boys club and their sexist barbs to prove herself in a chauvinist department. In Prime Suspect 2, she's assigned to head a racially charged murder investigation in a largely African/Caribbean neighbourhood. It's politics as usual in the image-conscious organization, so the superintendent adds to the team black Detective Robert Oswalde (Colin Salma), a sharp but hot-headed investigator who has just broken off an affair with Tennyson. Now Tennyson grapples with her own conflicted feelings while fighting political and public-relations battles both in the media and within the police system itself in the midst of investigating the labyrinthine case. Between the scant clues left to sift, a prime suspect on the verge of death himself and divisions in her own team that result in a devastating death, Tennyson soon begins to suspect she's been hung out to dry by the department. Screenwriter Allan Cubitt dives into the murky waters of volatile racial and social relations to create an even more complex and compelling mystery in Tennyson's second appearance and Mirren rises to the challenge to explore the contradictions of an uncompromising cop in a compromising position. --Sean Axmaker
John Wayne has brawled bare-knuckled gunned down desperadoes fought jungle wars and piloted the skies. When the dust settles Wayne gives one of his best performances. In The Cowboys Rex Reed wrote All the forces that have made him a dominant personality as well as a major screen presence seem to combine. Old Dusty Britches can act. A rather jarring mix of period drama, trashy romance and all-star blockbuster, Duel of Hearts is a swashbuckling, bodice-ripping tale of slightly dubious quality. Based on a novel by Barbara Cartland, it provides the usual dollops of intrigue and love, although its choice of a female protagonist does at least give it some twist. The splendidly named Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody) is the story's plucky heroine, fighting to prove the innocence of her beau Lord Vane Brecon and discover his troubling inner turmoil. Donning a disguise that seems to consist largely of wearing her hair in a different manner, Lady Caroline places herself among the very people that would seek Brecon's undoing. Those looking for high quality drama should probably go elsewhere, but this is an entertaining enough piece of silliness, combining the history of Regency England with the production values of a daytime American soap opera. On the DVD: Duel of Hearts on DVD has had very little effort put into it, which is perhaps no surprise given the rather slapdash nature of the main feature. The sound has been digitally remastered but the picture quality hasn't, and has that dubious made-for-television look. The interactive menu is unattractive and unimaginative and there are no extras. --Phil Udell

Initially one of NBC network's most successful series, The A-Team ran for 90 one-hour episodes (with a few feature-length specials thrown in) from 1983 to 1987. The premise of the series was certainly different. A group of US operatives is sent to rob the Bank of Hanoi during the Vietnam War in an attempt to destabilise the country's economy, but the bigwig who organises the raid is killed, leaving no indication that the mission was officially sanctioned. Returning home, Smith (George Peppard), BA (it stood for "Bad Attitude") Baracus (Mr T), Face (Dirk Benedict) and that "crazy foo" Murdoch (Dwight Schultz) suddenly find themselves accused of criminal activity, obliging them to set up as benevolent mercenaries. They tear around the country in what looks like a delivery van, generally do-gooding while keeping one step ahead of the inept military police. Snappy, witty and fast paced, the series began as a spoof of the action-thriller genre. It wasn't until the later episodes that an element of seriousness crept in, which may have caused the decline in audience figures eventually resulting in the show's cancellation. On video and DVD though, it remains a feast for fans of classic cult TV.--Roger Thomas
