  • Cowboy Bebop: The Movie [2001]Cowboy Bebop: The Movie | DVD | (13/10/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

As the eagerly awaited Cowboy Bebop feature film reunites the original director, screenwriter, composer and vocal cast, it's not surprising that the film plays like an expanded TV episode. What should be the routine capture of a two-bit hacker by Faye escalates into a deadly game of cat and mouse, as Spike and the gang struggle to prevent the evil Vincent Volaju from murdering every human on Mars. Director Shinichiro Watanabe handles the action sequences with his usual panache: inside the sinister Cherious Medical research facility, Spike fights a beautiful agent, using a push broom in a series of manoeuvres Jackie Chan might envy; the climactic duel between Spike and Vincent plays against innocent yet eerie images of a Halloween carnival. This will delight fans of the series and provide an excellent introduction for the uninitiated. --Charles Solomon

  • National Security [2003]National Security | DVD | (22/09/2003) from £6.54   |  Saving you £-0.55 (-9.20%)   |  RRP £5.99

Although it's enjoyable as a brainless diversion, National Security is one of those forgettable entertainments that denies its own considerable potential. It's a police action comedy in the mould of Beverly Hills Cop, tailored to the buddy-flick formula and laced with racial tensions of the post-Rodney King era. It's set in Los Angeles, where dedicated cop Hank (Steve Zahn) does jail time for allegedly beating Earl (Martin Lawrence), whose only real assailant was an overzealous bumblebee. As fate and lazy screenwriting would have it, the two adversaries reunite as security guards, teaming up to crack a team of violent smugglers led by bleached-blond Eric Roberts (further proof that this movie's got nothing new to offer). Routine stunts distract from the comedy's mostly untapped resource: Lawrence pointedly riffs on racial profiling, and his prolific ad-libs play well against Zahn's by-the-book straight man. If their partnership had been allowed to develop more believably, National Security might have been more than a blip on the box-office radar. --Jeff Shannon

  • Hilary And Jackie (Wide Screen)Hilary And Jackie (Wide Screen) | DVD | (10/09/2001) from £6.88   |  Saving you £6.10 (156.81%)   |  RRP £9.99

It earned Oscar nods, yet this cinematic look at a genius--that of English cellist Jacqueline du Pré, who enraptured audiences with her bold, emblazoned and wholly unconventional playing style, and who died at age 42--was criticised for its "lapses" in truth by people who purportedly knew du Pré. Some of the controversy revolved around the other main character in Anand Tuckers gorgeous, involving movie--du Prés sister, Hilary, whose book,A Genius in the Family (cowritten with brother Piers), dished some dirt on Jackies sleeping with Hilarys husband. But dont let that deter you from this ebullient movie experience. Hilary and Jackie is a bisected story (each sisters tale is told in the same amount of screen time) teeming with heartfelt drama that belies the cheap shots it received from its detractors. Its stirring, reckless, loving, involving, and rife with unconventional passion; passion for music, life, art, and the delicate relationship between these two synchronous, extraordinary sisters as played by brilliant actors Emily Watson and Rachel Griffiths (both of whom earned Oscar nods). Though Watson got the juicy, showy role as Jackie, its Griffiths who provides the heart, soul, and spine of the film. And director Tucker has that gift of being able to explain through the visual medium what is happening inside of his characters heads. Hes helped by a fine screenplay by Frank Boyce Cottrell. No matter what the truth of Hilary and Jackie might really be, this is an exceptional, rare film that is defined and graced by fine acting and writing. --Paula Nechak
