Dr. Finlay's Casebook - A Questionable Practice | DVD | (30/04/2020)
from £7.99
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Unseen for over 50 years and thought lost forever, the missing episode of beloved classic BBC drama Dr. Finlay's Casebook has now been fully restored and made available for fans to cherish for the first time. Simply Media is delighted to announce the first ever Home Entertainment release of BBC's Dr. Finlay's Casebook A Questionable Practice: The Lost Classic, on DVD and available to download on Vimeo OD 17th April 2017. Believed lost forever from the BBC's archives, this piece of television history was miraculously recovered by Kaleidoscope and, at the request of our fans, made available to see again for the first time in over 50 years. The episode has been fully restored by the Doctor Who restoration team in time for the show's 55th anniversary this year. Based on A. J. Cronin's semi-autobiographical novella Country Doctor, the much-loved and memorable, long-running drama series Dr. Finlay's Casebook was aired by the BBC between 1962 and 1971, and very soon after it premiered in 1962, it quickly became one of the cornerstones of BBC drama at the time, amassing around 12 million viewers during its first series. Unfortunately, many of its episodes remain missing, although Simply Media have released what remains of this TV landmark on DVD. Set in the fictional Scottish town of Tannochbrae, the stories centre around the town's pre-NHS general medical practice, its residents, and the fascinating relationship between the young and forward thinking Dr. Finlay (Bill Simpson) and his traditional but highly pragmatic mentor and boss Dr. Cameron (Andrew Cruickshank). One of the most interesting aspects of the series was the ongoing friction between the two doctors and the disagreements they had. Finlay would propose new modern medical treatments to try, which Cameron would be sceptical of using on their patients, and the series looked at the consequences such treatment would have. The series is also remembered for not shying away from controversial issues at the time, such as abortion and poverty. The tension between Finlay and Cameron reaches crisis point in this dramatic episode A Questionable Practice. Dr. Finlay is exhausted after a lengthy flu epidemic, but when he requests a holiday Dr. Cameron declares that a break from work is a sign of Finlay's questionable dedication to the profession. Argument ensues, and the long hours of running the doctor's surgery and managing the health and wellbeing of the village's challenging patients causes Finlay to consider his future.... This DVD also contains a fascinating promo where you can view the un-restored and restored versions of this television classic side-by-side, giving an excellent insight as to the vast improvements restoration work has made to this lost television gem.

Saturday Night Live - The Best Of Mike Myers | DVD | (05/04/2004)
from £21.31
| Saving you £-15.32 (N/A%)
| RRP The Best of Mike Myers is a compilation of sketches from his six seasons on the American show Saturday Night Live, and features the star in his pre-Austin Powers days appearing in various garbs and characters, though not as Powers himself. There are, however, two Wayne's World segments, Myers' other great cinematic triumph (in collaboration with Dana Carvey), in which he plays the zonked-out heavy-metal dude who presents a cable show from his basement. One features Aerosmith guesting, waylaid by Wayne's mum and given the tour of the house, or "walk of shame"; the other has Madonna, in a parody of her In Bed With... era. Other characters include Sprockets, a stern and Teutonic techno-obsessed host, and Lothar of the Hill People, an ancient chieftain. Considering he is Liverpool-born, Myers is happy to peddle some curious American stereotypes of the British: that they have bad teeth, as in the "Hedley & Wyche" sketch ("one tube lasts a lifetime") or that they all behave like characters from a Terry-Thomas movie. Among the featured guests in these sketches are Steve Martin, Tom Hanks (as Aerosmith's roadie), Nicole Kidman as a six-year-old girl, Roseanne Barr and Danny DeVito. Sometimes, as is SNL's wont, the sketches go on several minutes too long and lack sharpness, while the star guests don't always put in Oscar-winning performances. However, amid the self-indulgence there are a number of very funny moments. On the DVD: The Best of Mike Myers DVD is a straightforward transfer of the TV original with no extra features. --David Stubbs
Miss Julie | DVD | (30/04/2001)
from £5.64
| Saving you £10.35 (183.51%)
| RRP Miss Julie is a claustrophobic class study set within a 19th-century Count's kitchen. It chronicles the events of one midsummer night when the housemistress--an obstinate and confused Julie (Saffron Burrows)--is beaten in a round of sexual gaming with footman Peter Mullan. Based on the play by August Strindberg, the film maintains a constant sense of theatre by only having three speaking parts (the other coming from Maria Doyle Kennedy as Christine, the long-suffering cook and fiancée), just one set and a penchant for hand-held camerawork by director Mike Figgis. Known for his experimental approach to storytelling, this is technically a predecessor to Figgis' Timecode, since the all-important rape scene is conveyed through a disorientating split-screen technique. He'd worked with fellow Brit Burrows before on The Loss of Sexual Innocence and One Night Stand, but gives the gal with the outsized cheekbones top billing here and is rewarded with a thoroughly rounded performance. Backed by the director's own musical score, this melodrama has a very personal feel to it. --Paul Tonks

Traffik | DVD | (14/04/2003)
from £31.15
| Saving you £-21.16 (N/A%)
| RRP At the end of the 1980s, Traffik was an early indication that Channel 4's financial investment in film would be worthwhile and not pull any punches. The series depicts a soulless society embroiled in the catchments of its own greed. Drug trafficking is a political hot potato that one man alone cannot hope to spearhead a war against. Minister Jack Lithgow (Bill Paterson) realises this somewhere in between negotiating an international crackdown policy and discovering his daughter Caroline (Julia Ormond) is hooked on the very thing he's fighting to eradicate. This is one of three threads masterfully interwoven in Simon Moore's script and spread across six episodes. At the other corners of the Heroin triangle are Hamburg and Pakistan. In Germany, businessman Rosshalde is arrested on smuggling charges. This triggers a startling personality change in his wife Helen (Lindsay Duncan), who takes on a Lady Macbeth-like role in destroying everything obstructing her financial security. In Kurachi we follow the woes of farmer Fazal (Jamal Shah) as he finds work with drug baron Tariq Butt (Talat Hussain). Performances are outstanding as the taut plot draws these elements toward a cold finale. BAFTAs were awarded to the series' design, camerawork and sound. Technically it's as brilliant as Steven Soderbergh's 2000 cinematic remake Traffic. But in the characterisations of a populace who are all wrong in their views on drug use, you'll be hard pressed to find a better presentation of the subject on the big or small screen. On the DVD: Eight chapters per episode; picture and sound adequate. That's it. Like the subject of the series, the search for extra happiness is a fruitless one. --Paul Tonks
