  • Saturday Night Live - The Best Of Mike Myers [1999]Saturday Night Live - The Best Of Mike Myers | DVD | (05/04/2004) from £20.77   |  Saving you £-14.78 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

The Best of Mike Myers is a compilation of sketches from his six seasons on the American show Saturday Night Live, and features the star in his pre-Austin Powers days appearing in various garbs and characters, though not as Powers himself. There are, however, two Wayne's World segments, Myers' other great cinematic triumph (in collaboration with Dana Carvey), in which he plays the zonked-out heavy-metal dude who presents a cable show from his basement. One features Aerosmith guesting, waylaid by Wayne's mum and given the tour of the house, or "walk of shame"; the other has Madonna, in a parody of her In Bed With... era. Other characters include Sprockets, a stern and Teutonic techno-obsessed host, and Lothar of the Hill People, an ancient chieftain. Considering he is Liverpool-born, Myers is happy to peddle some curious American stereotypes of the British: that they have bad teeth, as in the "Hedley & Wyche" sketch ("one tube lasts a lifetime") or that they all behave like characters from a Terry-Thomas movie. Among the featured guests in these sketches are Steve Martin, Tom Hanks (as Aerosmith's roadie), Nicole Kidman as a six-year-old girl, Roseanne Barr and Danny DeVito. Sometimes, as is SNL's wont, the sketches go on several minutes too long and lack sharpness, while the star guests don't always put in Oscar-winning performances. However, amid the self-indulgence there are a number of very funny moments. On the DVD: The Best of Mike Myers DVD is a straightforward transfer of the TV original with no extra features. --David Stubbs

  • Miss Julie [2000]Miss Julie | DVD | (30/04/2001) from £6.26   |  Saving you £9.73 (155.43%)   |  RRP £15.99

Miss Julie is a claustrophobic class study set within a 19th-century Count's kitchen. It chronicles the events of one midsummer night when the housemistress--an obstinate and confused Julie (Saffron Burrows)--is beaten in a round of sexual gaming with footman Peter Mullan. Based on the play by August Strindberg, the film maintains a constant sense of theatre by only having three speaking parts (the other coming from Maria Doyle Kennedy as Christine, the long-suffering cook and fiancée), just one set and a penchant for hand-held camerawork by director Mike Figgis. Known for his experimental approach to storytelling, this is technically a predecessor to Figgis' Timecode, since the all-important rape scene is conveyed through a disorientating split-screen technique. He'd worked with fellow Brit Burrows before on The Loss of Sexual Innocence and One Night Stand, but gives the gal with the outsized cheekbones top billing here and is rewarded with a thoroughly rounded performance. Backed by the director's own musical score, this melodrama has a very personal feel to it. --Paul Tonks

  • Traffik [1989]Traffik | DVD | (14/04/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

At the end of the 1980s, Traffik was an early indication that Channel 4's financial investment in film would be worthwhile and not pull any punches. The series depicts a soulless society embroiled in the catchments of its own greed. Drug trafficking is a political hot potato that one man alone cannot hope to spearhead a war against. Minister Jack Lithgow (Bill Paterson) realises this somewhere in between negotiating an international crackdown policy and discovering his daughter Caroline (Julia Ormond) is hooked on the very thing he's fighting to eradicate. This is one of three threads masterfully interwoven in Simon Moore's script and spread across six episodes. At the other corners of the Heroin triangle are Hamburg and Pakistan. In Germany, businessman Rosshalde is arrested on smuggling charges. This triggers a startling personality change in his wife Helen (Lindsay Duncan), who takes on a Lady Macbeth-like role in destroying everything obstructing her financial security. In Kurachi we follow the woes of farmer Fazal (Jamal Shah) as he finds work with drug baron Tariq Butt (Talat Hussain). Performances are outstanding as the taut plot draws these elements toward a cold finale. BAFTAs were awarded to the series' design, camerawork and sound. Technically it's as brilliant as Steven Soderbergh's 2000 cinematic remake Traffic. But in the characterisations of a populace who are all wrong in their views on drug use, you'll be hard pressed to find a better presentation of the subject on the big or small screen. On the DVD: Eight chapters per episode; picture and sound adequate. That's it. Like the subject of the series, the search for extra happiness is a fruitless one. --Paul Tonks

Twenty-three years ago, Bill Drummond ceased activities as part of the enormously successful pop group, the KLF. Since 2014, he's been on a World Tour, travelling around the world with his show The 25 Paintings visiting a different city each year. In December 2016, he based himself in Kolkata, while in the Spring of 2018, he was in Lexington, North Carolina. In each place, he carries out his regular work, setting up a shoeshine stand in the street or building a bed in order to give it away. He walks across the longest bridge he can find, banging his parade drum at dawn, starts knitting circles with anyone who wants to join him, bakes cakes and offers them to strangers whose houses sit on a circle he's drawn on a map of the city. He's not rich, and he's deliberately designed his actions so they cannot be monetised. He's mostly been ignored by the art world. So what is he doing it all for? Director Paul Duane shadowed Bill Drummond for three years before starting this film in order to achieve some level of understanding of what he's about. Co-produced by Grammy Award-winning writer Robert Gordon and shot by Oscar-nominated DOP Robbie Ryan, the documentary is a fascinating look at an uncompromising artist. Best Before Death is named after Drummond's belief that the World Tour, scheduled to end when he's 72, is a race against his own mortality. It's a film about life, death, art, money, music, and cake. And some knitting. Extras High Definition presentation Original stereo soundtrack Audio commentary with Bill Drummond and director Paul Duane (2020) What Is Film?
