  In a totally unexpected piece of casting, Blue Valley Songbird stars Dolly Parton as a country singer/songwriter with big hair, large breasts and lots of lippy. The comparison ends there, though, because here she plays Leana Taylor, a talented performer hampered by her provincial background (and unpleasant manager/boyfriend) who realises she must escape her small-town roots in order to achieve her true potential. This isn't the most taxing of narratives, but it's the music that counts here. This movie is of the "musical drama" genre--take a star musical performer, give them the lead role in a movie, then furnish them with every excuse to perform therein so long as it can be done as a realistic element within the overall story--and as such it's highly agreeable. Parton not only has buckets of musical talent but also has plausible acting skills, even if the viewer is bound to think that these are mainly to do with being Dolly Parton. In any event, the songs are excellent, so this is well worth watching even if you find yourself fast-forwarding until you see someone picking a guitar up.--Roger Thomas

His mild manner and passivity make him immune to the new freedoms he'll experience outside of jail and so his release seems like more of a punishment than a reward. By a stroke of luck he meets a spiritual man (Morgan Freeman) who runs a soup kitchen and community center. He is given a job as a parking attendant for the nearby nightclub. This job is the catalyst that brings him in touch with a young girl Sofia (Kirsten Dunst) whose difficult home life has turned her into a self-destructive wreck wasting her life on booze and drugs. However her faith is restored by Manual's gentle way of looking out for her. Little by little Manual's goodness - the result of years of guilt spent reflecting on his crime in prison - casts a ray of new light on everyone involved including the young and troubled son of Adele.

A small-time hood Joey (Frank Whaley) and his motley crew (Richard Edson and Saverio Guerra) plan to rip Philip off but their plans are complicated when the antic impulsively violent Joey begins to feel a strange attraction to his would-be prey. Wolf (Michael Madsen) Philip's thuggish brother (and Louise's former lover) arrives in town practically guaranteeing some kind of violent showdown. After shooting the film Cox returned to Mexico to work on his next project. While he was away the producers then re-edited The Winner without his consent and replaced the film's soundtrack. Cox has since distanced himself from the final product.
