  It's pretty tough to beat Jailhouse Rock in terms of sheer entertainment, but Elvis lovers are particularly fond of this 1964 hit. Lucky's car needs a new engine, so he gets a waiter job at a casino and starts working his crooning charms on Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). It's their on-screen chemistry that makes this flick a lot of fun; Presley never had a better co-star than Ann-Margret, and their race-car romance is quintessential 1960s fluff. Fox, Kimberly Elise), all struggling against a system that seems designed to prevent them from realising their dreams. The movie establishes their plight with credible attention to emotional detail, making their decision to rob banks believable enough to give the ensuing plot its inevitably tragic momentum. Co-written by the screenwriter of What's Love Got to Do With It?, the film conveys genuine compassion for its characters, and the ensemble cast is uniformly strong--especially Queen Latifah as a brash lesbian whose fate is as certain as her forceful attitude.Set It Off expresses a real sense that these women have been close friends for years, and that gives the film additional impact, even when their transition to crime and violence feels somewhat forced and superficial. A romantic subplot involving Pinkett and a social-climbing banker (Blair Underwood) is too contrived to be convincing, and director F. Gary Gray (Friday) tries too hard to combine hard-hitting action with social relevance (a weakness shared by Gray's following film, The Negotiator). Still, Set It Off effectively avoids passing judgement; its emotional complexity transcends simple notions of right and wrong, injecting vitality--and a kind of renegade integrity--into the traditions of a familiar plot. --Jeff Shannon

  Before beginning the main feature make sure you watch Burt Lancaster's endorsement of Marty in the appended theatrical trailer first. Yes, he was involved as coproducer, but his conviction clearly stems from the film itself. This screen adaptation of Paddy Chayevsky's play was a breakthrough in an American neo-realism that would sustain itself for two decades. Ernest Borgnine is in his element as the Bronx butcher in his mid-30s seemingly destined for a bachelor existence on account of past disappointments. There's a winningly natural performance from Esther Minciotti as his well-meaning, ever-interfering mother, while Betsy Blair is inspired casting as schoolteacher Clara, plain and diffident but with the proverbial good heart. The supporting cast is one of telling cameos, simply and unselfconsciously delivered. Delbert Mann conveys the energetic bustle of the Italian ex-pat community, and ensures that the intimacy of the original play is not lost. On the DVD: Marty's black-and-white print reproduces crisply in the DVD format, as does Roy Webb's score, which vividly evokes 1950s American city life. There's dubbing in four and subtitles in five European languages, together with the original trailer mentioned above. Having seen Marty, you'll surely agree that Lancaster's enthusiasm was not misplaced. --Richard Whitehouse
