An animated adventure from the artistic team behind 'Watership Down'. A pair of dogs Rowf (Christopher Benjamin) and Snitter (John Hurt) escape from an animal research facility situated in a remote part of the English countryside. Rowf is cynical and mistrusting of humans having only known the tortured existence of being a laboratory animal. Snitter on the other hand had previously enjoyed life as a domestic pet and longs to be loved and cared for by a human master once again. Unprepared for life in the wild the pair befriend a fox The Tod (James Bolam) who helps them learn to survive in the bleak environment by feeding on the area's livestock. As the authorities attempt to track down the escapees things take a turn for the worse when a deliberately leaked story suggests the dogs may be infected with the bubonic plague...

Diehard supporters of everyone's favourite anti-Pope will want Demistifying the Devil, if only because Marilyn Manson is all things to all of them--cutting-edge nu-nasty rock theatre act or slacker anti-hero--you take your choice. However, this very unauthorised biography (there's no footage of young Brian himself or his immediate musical circle other than a few seconds of blurry concert material) is also informative viewing for the merely curious. Mostly consisting of anecdotes from people who were either associated with him before he became famous or who were ejected from his entourage, it soon becomes clear that MM was and remains a genuinely talented visionary. It also becomes clear that the best thing he ever did to further his career was to abandon the huddle of derivative no-marks who constituted the "scene" in his home town of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and whose parochial ramblings dominate this unintentionally hilarious documentary. If you're a fan, you'll have your faith confirmed. If you're not, you'll still end up feeling strangely pleased that both Manson and those he left behind are getting the respective levels of attention they deserve. --Roger Thomas

A moody film noir Room 36 is a labyrinthine thriller. The twisting nihilistic narrative tells of Helen Woods MP sent to a sleazy hotel to deliver classified information destined to bring down the British Government. Unknown to Woods in Room 38 of the hotel her arrival is awaited by Connor a brutal hit-man. Meanwhile a prostitute arrives at the hotel to visit Richard Armstrong a guest staying in Room 36... and were it not for a simple twist-of-fate no-one would be set-up framed crossed double-crossed or killed... Room 36 has been described by Empire magazine as 'Worthy of Hitchcock himself' and makes excellent viewing. Room 36 is a low-budget British thriller shot in black-and-white from director Jim Groom. Hit man Conner is supposed to meet MP Helen Woods in a hotel room to exchange money for microfilm. Things get really messed up when a call girl accidentally arrives in room 38 instead of room 36.
It would be easy to pass by this movie, based on Anna Sewell's famous novel Black Beauty, on the assumption that it's dated and twee. Well, perhaps it is a little, but the sheer quality of the whole enterprise places it in the front rank of children's cinema classics. Screenwriter Wolf Mankowitz's ability to harness both literary and popular techniques in the same work (also true of his written fiction) remains unsurpassed in this captivating tale of Beauty's eventful life, from being raised as a foal by the devoted Joe (Lester), then passing through the hands of various owners before being purchased by, supposedly, Miss Sewell herself, to be once more cared for by a now-adult Joe who is in her employ. Along the way, Beauty passes through the hands of gypsies, a circus owner, a family of aristocrats and is even ridden into war, with each episode being expertly cast (Mower is in particularly fine form as a mad, bad and dangerous army officer) and produced to the highest cinematic standards--even the exterior lighting is perfect. Absolutely recommended. The 4:3 DVD is a transfer of exceptionally high quality and includes the cinema trailer, an image gallery of stills and collector-enthusing promotional ephemera (presented in a thumb-saving slideshow format) and, rather incongruously, a trailer for Help! I'm a Fish!--Roger Thomas
