  Claude Whatham's 1974 film All Creatures Great and Small is a modest and charming cornucopia of nostalgia, cuddly calves, romance and acerbic-yet-warm-hearted Yorkshire folk. It's based of course on James Herriot's phenomenally popular tales of a vet's life in the Dales and spawned a long-running BBC series with a different cast. Here, we have a fresh-faced Simon Ward as James, joining Siegfried Farnon's small town practice. As the benignly despotic Farnon, a pre-Hannibal Lecter Anthony Hopkins already exudes plenty of brooding charisma. Lisa Harrow, fetching in 1930s slacks, is Helen, the farmer's daughter who catches James' eye. Their adventures with the local animal populace in the incredibly beautiful pre-Second World War Dales run the gamut, from arms up cows' bottoms to tender birthing scenes, over-indulged pooches, horses with torsions and one moment which will strike a poignant note with pet owners of all ages. It's taught and witty thanks to distinguished dramatist Hugh Whitemore's delightful script and as comforting as a warm blanket, a stodgy tea and a roaring fire on a winter's evening. On the DVD: with no extras apart from the chapter list, this is a basic package. Presented in 1.85:1 Anamorphic aspect ratio and a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack, it's easy viewing, offering more than adequate picture and sound quality. --Piers Ford

Ondi Timoner had unprecedented access of the two bands and presents a genuinely fascination of a friendship forged in ambition and destroyed by excess. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

  Brian Yuzna's Bride of Re-Animator (1990) was one of the last hurrahs for special-effects-based horror films before CGI extended the ease with which the impossible could be put on screen. Like its predecessor, Re-Animator, Bride is very loosely based on HP Lovecraft's stories of Herbert West, a scientist with a taste for investigation that knows no boundaries, especially not those of good taste. He and his agonisingly liberal sidekick Cain have discovered an improvement on their original serum--now they can not only bring the dead back to life but also assemble them from parts first. Jeffrey Combs gives a wonderfully dour performance as West, not even cracking a smile when a creature he has concocted from fingers and an eye-ball is running around the room unseen by a pestering detective. This is the sort of film that constantly escalates its macabre elements--the surviving villain of the first film has been left as simply an animated head, but that does not stop him pursuing his revenge on West, nor finding ways of using West's new techniques along the way. It all makes for cheerfully gruesome fun. On the DVD: Bride of Re-Animator is presented in an anamorphic widescreen visual aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and its Dolby 2.0 does what little can be done with the muddy soundtrack, but is rather better with the jauntily creepy score. The only special features on this Tartan issue are the trailer, the director's production notes and a reel of trailers for other Tartan horror movies. --Roz Kaveney

Soon his calls go unreturned the studio drops the film and the picture ends up going into production with half the original budget. Duffy's rise and subsequent fall from Hollywood grace is something you won't believe unless you see it for yourself. The Boondock Saints (Dir. Troy Duffy 1999): Thy Kingdom Come Thy Will Be Done... It's the one commandment they cannot keep. Tough stylish and extreme fans of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction will thrill to the action intensity and intelligence of this modern day morality tale written in blood starring Willem Dafoe Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus. When the sadistic Russian mob starts muscling in on their South Boston Irish neighbourhood Connor and Murphy McManus know what must be done. Feeling that the vengeance of God is flowing through their veins they set out to rid the streets of gangsters criminals and lowlifes. As the body count rises the brothers become local heroes. Now one unorthodox FBI agent must be cunning enough to bring them down...

  Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971. At the time, the coincidence gave rise to some comment, but it was not until the death of Kurt Cobain, about two and a half decades later, that the idea of a 27 Club began to catch on in public perception, reignited again with the death of Amy Winehouse in 2011. The 27 Club represents just a few of the many well-known singers and musicians who died at that age and this film looks at the phenomenon and tries to understand why these particular stars are so mythologised and celebrated and why indeed their lives ended when they did. Through interviews with musicians, critics, medical experts and featuring unseen footage, the film investigates the lives, music, and artistry of these lost icons, forever frozen in time at the age of 27.

Jagger and Richard were childhood friends becoming reacquainted in 1960 at Dartford Railway Station due to their love of music. Later meeting Brian Jones who in 1962 went on to form The Rolling Stones. The story of the early Stones is very much a tale of how Brian Jones forged the band with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and became a key catalyst in the creation of their early sound. But whether it was the pressures of early fame or through his addiction to drugs his role in the band became untenable. Even though he is credited as originally forming the band he was eventually over shadowed by Jagger and Richard and his role gradually diminished until in June 1969 he was asked to leave. Less than a month later and under questionable circumstances he was found dead in his own swimming pool believed to have taken his own life. Using performance footage and rare interviews footage with Brian Jones Mick Jagger Charlie Watts Keith Richards and Bill Wyman as well as The Stones Manager (1962/67) Tony Calder and Brain Jones' former partner Pat Andrews this in depth programme provides a fascinating insight into the original formation of this incredible super group during their first decade. The programme concludes at the staged event in Hype Park 5th July 1969 which became recognised as a memorial concert to Brian Jones. This DVD is a must for all music and Rolling Stones fans.

  Executive producer Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Spy Kids) is the driving force behind this energetic reboot of the popular Predator films, which pits the dreadlocked alien hunters against a rogues' gallery of human antiheroes, led by a bulked-up Adrien Brody. The Oscar winner acquits himself nicely in the role of a gritty mercenary who finds himself stranded on a jungle planet with a host of criminals and professional killers (among them such scene-stealers as Walton Goggins and Danny Trejo), as well as a seemingly innocent doctor, well played by Topher Grace. They've been deposited there to serve as living targets for a horde of Predators--whose looks, designed by Gregory Nicotero and Howard Berger, are impressively varied and sleek--that use the planet as their private hunting grounds. Laurence Fishburne is also on hand as a soldier who has managed to survive for years in the jungle; he, Brody, and Grace do much to make the pulpy dialogue by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch (adapting a premise penned by Rodriguez in the mid-'90s) palatable. Likewise, Hungarian director Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) lends a great deal of atmosphere and Rodriguez-style momentum to the picture--perhaps more than necessary, since the end result is, like the 1987 original with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a fun B-movie and nothing more, designed entirely to give moviegoers a slick, unchallenging roller-coaster ride. Having said that, it's a vast improvement over the 1990 sequel and the dreadful tie-ins with the Alien franchise, and should provide movie monster aficionados with an afternoon's worth of thrills. --Paul Gaita
