Marvel comics fans rejoice! X-Men (Dir. Bryan Singer 2000): Born into a world filled with prejudice are children who possess extraordinary and dangerous powers - the result of unique genetic mutations. Cyclops unleashes bolts of energy from his eyes. Storm can manipulate the weather at will. Rogue absorbs the life force of anyone she touches. But under the tutelage of Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) these and other outcasts learn to harness their powers for the good of mankind. Now they must protect those who fear them as the nefarious Magneto (Ian McKellen) who believes humans and mutants can never co-exist unveils his sinister plan for the future... X-Men 2 (Dir. Bryan Singer 2003): Mutants continue their struggle against a society that fears and distrusts them. Their cause becomes even more desperate following an incredible attack in The White House by an as yet undetermined assailant possessing extraordinary abilities. The shocking attack renews the political and public outcry for a Mutant Registration Act and an anti-mutant movement now led by William Stryker (Brian Cox) a wealthy former Army commander who is rumored to have experimented on mutants. Stryker's mutant work is somehow tied to Logan's mysterious and forgotten past. As Wolverine searches for clues to his origin Stryker puts into motion his anti-mutant program - launching an attack on Xavier's mansion. Magneto newly escaped from his plastic prison proposes a partnership with the X-Men to combat their common and formidable enemy: Stryker. With the fates of Xavier mankind - and mutantkind - in their hands the X-Men face their most dangerous mission ever! Daredevil: Director's Cut (Dir. Mark Steven Johnson 2003): When justice is blind it knows no fear. 30 minutes of never before seen footage seamlessly edited back into the film creating a whole new sub-plot featuring a brand new character! Ben Affleck is Matt Murdock a.k.a Daredevil. As a young boy he lost his sight in a chemical accident which left him with his other senses superhumanly enhanced (and some incredible acrobatic skills). Flash forward and Matt is working by day as a pro bono lawyer (with partner Jon Favreau) and by night as a righteous avenger. The plot sees New York supercriminal Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) calling on Irish assassin Bullseye (Colin Farrell) to take care of some business involving the father of Jennifer Garner's Elektra (with whom Matt falls head over heels in love). Daredevil is a shadowy comic book fantasy that provides plenty of fast-paced high-kicking action. Elektra (Dir. Rob Bowman 2005): Looks can kill. From the pages of Marvel Comics creator of 'X-Men' and 'Spider-Man' comes 'Elektra'. In the ultimate battle between good and evil stands a warrior who makes the choice that tips the balance... Elektra (Garner) is a strong mysterious and sexy action heroine; a lethal synthesis of grace and power. • Double Platinum [1999]Double Platinum | DVD | (19/06/2000) from £26.32   |  Saving you £-20.33 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

A soapy backstage melodrama originally produced for network broadcast, Double Platinum downplays showbiz verisimilitude to turn on the tears. With 60s soul queen Diana Ross and 90s pop princess Brandy sharing production credit as well as billing, this formulaic tearjerker focuses on its stars' dramatic chops more than their musical prowess, a choice that won't deter their respective audiences, even as it disappoints less partisan music fans who might have hoped for a stronger musical component.Olivia King (Ross) is the former St. Louis housewife who abandoned her family for pop stardom, only to return 18 years later determined to meet, and reconcile with, her daughter, Kayla (Brandy), now nurturing her own footlight fantasies. But when the prodigal mom finally does reveal herself to the bright, feisty teen, Kayla is outraged and then hard-boiled. Olivia's offer to help the undeniably talented girl make industry contacts is accepted, with the bitter caveat that the superstar should abandon any hopes of a true maternal bond with her embittered daughter. The usually imperious Olivia meekly accepts those terms, while the secretly yearning Kayla keeps up her tough-cookie cover, but the plot telegraphs its ultimate destination, even as the tears flow. Both stars acquit themselves well in the story's stormier clashes, and the emotional tug of the story is well engineered to soak hankies. Less credulous viewers will be hampered by the original songs--when Ross steps on-stage, her regal demeanour and flashy (if occasionally silly) gowns support her supposed status as a legend, but the utterly forgettable, generic songs she mouths deflate that image. That said, viewers less interested in the actual music than the glitzy idea of the two characters may well be content to wallow in the waterworks of a story that could as easily have been titled Divas: The Next Generation. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

  • Screwed [2000]Screwed | DVD | (02/04/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Screwedwas another nail in the coffin of former Saturday Night Livewisecracker Norm MacDonald, following his dismal previous film, Dirty Work. However, while Screwedisn't particularly funny (the jokes about dentures, dog poop and dead bodies are pretty much as old as the hills), the plot exerts a perverse interest; for most of the film, it's genuinely unpredictable. MacDonald plays Willard, the butler-chauffer, all-purpose flunky of Mrs. Crock, the wealthy, penny-pinching owner of a pastry company. Fed up with her abuse, Willard and his friend Rusty (David Chappelle from Blue Streak and 200 Cigarettes) conspire to kidnap her dog Muffin. But Muffin escapes and returns home; the ransom note is assumed to be for Willard himself. Rusty and Willard run with the idea, sending in a videotape of himself being held prisoner. When a detective starts getting a little too close, they panic and decide to fake Willard's death. Okay, none of it makes much sense, but in a world of ridiculously formulaic films which slavishly follow every screenwriting cliché Screwed seems like a brief oasis of narrative invention. Of course, it still isn't funny. And by the end, it's lost whatever spark of imagination that got it started. Too bad. It's written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the screenwriters responsible for Problem Child, but also for Ed Wood and The People vs Larry Flynt--they should stick to biographies. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Christina Aguileras My Reflection is a mirror that shows where the teen-pop divas going (toward grown-up diva-dom as an R&B star) and where shes been (showcasing her navel on a dance-infused tour). Aguileras first concert video shows that what this "girl" really wants is to move beyond the bouncy R&B-flavoured pop shes known for. Her cheeky hits ("Genie in a Bottle", "Come On Over Baby", "What a Girl Wants") are followed by songs from Mi Reflejo, her Spanish-language album and My Kind of Christmas, her holiday release. She has sweet duets with R&B legend Dr John on "Merry Christmas, Baby" and balladeer Brian McKnight on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", as well as sharing the stage with rapper Lil Bow Wow (weird, but it works) on "So Emotional" and "Christmas Time". (Quick behind-the-scenes interviews from MTVs Diary punctuate the concert.) Despite her inability to resist over-the-top vocal histrionics, Aguileras range is impressive, whether shes performing a spirated rendition of Frees 1970 hit "All Right Now" or belting out Etta Jamess 1961 classic "At Last" after giving the blues singer a heartfelt tribute. --Valerie J Nelson, Amazon.com
