Cherry Falls, the eponymous small town in Cherry Falls, has some dirty secrets--secrets that come to light when a psychotic killer starts killing teenagers. But the killer has an unusual criterion: only virgins are marked for death. Cherry Falls is a striking movie that never got released in cinemas, probably because marketers didn't know what to do with it. It's not a winking, smirk-while-you-shriek twist on the genre like Scream, nor is it a broad parody like Scary Movie--instead, Cherry Falls tries (and largely succeeds) at trying to turn the clichés of slasher movies into something that will do more than make you jump in shock. It's still scary; few things are creepier than wandering the empty hallways of a high school after hours, and Cherry Falls takes full advantage of that. It's also often funny, mostly because the mechanics of a slasher movie have become just a little too much and you can't help laughing. But it also makes you think twice about attitudes towards sex--moments such as parents breaking into a brawl while talking about their children's sex activity, or an "experienced" girl's pep talk to an assembly of girls eager to lose their virginity, are both funny and caustic. Brittany Murphy (Clueless, Girl, Interrupted) shines as the sheriff's daughter caught in the middle of it all; Michael Biehn (The Terminator) is great as the earnest sheriff who knows more than he lets on; and Jay Mohr (Jerry Maguire) smoothly handles the part of a teacher with an unhealthy interest in Murphy. Cherry Falls doesn't tell you when it's funny or scary, which makes many viewers uncomfortable. But if you're interested in watching a slippery, layered examination of sexual attitudes that is also a successful, spooky slasher flick, then this movie is for you. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Summer Catch combines sports movie with teen romance across class boundaries and sticks in some less than effective bawdy comedy to make up the weight. Playing in a local summer baseball league is the last chance at a professional sports career Ryan (Freddie Prinz Jr) has after he gave up an earlier chance in order to attend his mother's funeral. The threats to his success include the rivalry of other young players, the temptation to just have fun offered by teammate Brubaker (Matthew Lillard) and his growing feelings for Tenley (Jessica Biel). Ryan also has his own demon--an obsession with failure. Occasional outcroppings of psychobabble and melodrama stop this ever finding a satisfactory tone of its own--the scenes on the baseball diamond are often the most interesting. The scenes of sexual comedy largely waste such interesting young actors as Marc Blucas, Christian Kane and Brittany Murphy, all of whom do what they can with unprepossessing material. This is a film for Freddie Prinz Jr fans more than anyone else. On the DVD: Summer Catch on DVD offers a collection of deleted scenes that indicate just how much more uncertain the film's tone was before editing; the commentary by actors Prinz and Biel and director Mike Tollin shows that they at least all had a fairly good time making it. The visual aspect ratio is widescreen anamorphic 1.85:1 and the DVD has Dolby 5:1 digital sound. --Roz Kaveney

Happy Feat: In the great nation of Emperor Penguins deep in Antarctica you're nobody unless you can sing-which is unfortunate for Mumble (Elijah Wood) who is the worst singer in the world. He is born dancing to his own tune...tap dancing. Though Mumble's mum Norma Jean (Nicole Kidman) thinks this little habit is cute his dad Memphis (Hugh Jackman) says it 'just ain't penguin.' Besides they both know that without a Heartsong Mumble may never find true love. As fate would have it his one friend Gloria (Brittany Murphy) happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch but she struggles with his strange 'hippity- hoppity' ways. Mumble is just too different-especially for Noah the Elder (Hugo Weaving) the stern leader of Emperor Land who ultimately casts him out of the community. Away from home for the first time Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins-the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon (Robin Williams) the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with them. In Adelie Land Mumble seeks the counsel of Lovelace the Guru (also voiced by Robin Williams) a crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin who will answer any of life's questions for the price of a pebble. Together with Lovelace and the Amigos Mumble sets out across vast landscapes and after some epic encounters proves that by being true to yourself you can make all the difference in the world. March Of The Penguins: Coming from a French director Luc Jacquet the Oscar-winning family documentary March Of The Penguins would have to be a love story. And it is in that it follows the mating rituals of the emperor penguin one of the most resilient animals on earth. Each summer after a nourishing period of deep-sea feeding the penguins pop up onto the ice and begin their procession across the frozen tundra of Antarctica. Walking in single file they are a sight to behold. Hundreds converge from every direction moving instinctively toward their mating ground. Once there they mingle and chatter until they find the perfect mate - a monogamous match that will last a year through the brutal winter and into the spring. During that time the mother will birth an egg and then leave for the ocean to feed again. The father will stay to protect the egg through the freezing blizzards and pure darkness of winter which would be deadly to practically any other species. Finally with spring the egg hatches and the baby penguins are born. Mothers return from the sea to reunite with their families and feed the starving newborns while the fathers are finally relieved of their protective duties after months without food. The film is remarkable in its story which is narrated by Morgan Freeman whose dignified voice gives the penguins the grave admiration they deserve. But even more incredible is its photography which shows the penguins hunting underwater slidi

8 Mile (2002): Eminem (Marshall Mathers) makes his big screen debut with 8 MILE a bracing drama directed by Curtis Hanson. Set in 1995 in the bleak urban battle zone of Detroit the film follows the struggles of a young man who is desperate to make a better life for himself. Jimmy Smith Jr. better known as Rabbit is destined for a life of squalor. Living in a cramped trailer with his deadbeat mom (Kim Basinger) Rabbit works in a factory to make ends meet. His only outlet is hip-hop. Possessing a talent for freestyle rapping Rabbit still hasn't managed to unleash his true potential. But his best friend Future (Mekhi Phifer) is determined to make that happen. Future forces Rabbit to enter a freestyle battle that he blew the week before giving him another chance at redemption. Hanson's stellar portrait of lower-class urban disillusionment shot with uncompromisingly gritty realism by Rodrigo Prieto proves that the issue is no longer about race it's about money. Eminem delivers a bold performance as the troubled youngster who is still trying to find his place in a harsh cruel world. Boyz N The Hood (1991): Boyz N The Hood is the critically acclaimed story about three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood and of street life where friendship pain danger and love combine to form reality. ""The Hood"" is a place where drive-by shootings and unemployment are rampant. But it is also a place where harmony co-exists with adversity especially for the three young men growing up there: Doughboy (Ice Cube) an unambitious drug dealer; his brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut) a college-bound teenage father; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who aspires to a brighter future beyond the ""The Hood."" Higher Learning (1995): Director John Singleton's Higher Learning follows three very different freshman students in their first term of university who find themselves having to reassess their lives and confront such thought-provoking issues as prejudice racism and sexism... Former high school track star Malik Williams finds that instead of cruising through his first year of an athletic scholarship he's actually going to have to run faster and harder in order to make the grade. Naive Kirstin Conne is ill prepared for a completely different aspect of college life - not only does she discover that male students don't always accept ""no"" for an answer but she also starts to reassess her own sexual leanings. Finally there's Remy the sad quiet kid from Idaho who nobody wants to befriend. Ultimately he turns to the only group that will have him - the trouble-making neo-Nazi skinheads. Among the characters that act as forces in the lives of these three students are Professor Phillips and long-term student Fudge who serve as positive role models as this provocative portrait of modern life builds to its searing and shocking climax.
