Inspired by the stories of real women, and the men who surround them, this provocative character-driven series centres on the formidable Margaret Wells (Samantha Morton) and her daughters (Jessica Brown Findlay and Eloise Smyth) as she struggles to reconcile the role of mother with brothel owner. There's Something About Mary recalls the days of the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker movies, in which (often tasteless) gags were piled on at a fierce rate. The difference is that cowriters and codirectors Bobby and Peter Farrelly have also crafted a credible story line and even tossed in some genuine emotional content. The Farrelly brothers' first two pictures, Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, had some moments of uproarious laughter, but were uneven. With Mary, they've created a consistently hilarious romantic comedy, made all the funnier by the fact that you know that they know that some of their gags go way over the line. Cameron Diaz stars as Mary, every guy's ideal woman. Ben Stiller plays a high-school suitor still hung up on her years later; the obstacles standing between him and her include a number of psychotic suitors, a miserable little pooch and, oh yeah, a murder charge. The Farrellys' admittedly simplistic camera work, which adapts easily to a TV screen, and the fact that you're likely to laugh yourself so silly over certain scenes you'll want to replay them to see what you were missing while you were busy convulsing, make this a perfect film for home-viewing. --David Kronke

Decades after the Nazi death camps were finally closed; exclusive new footage from Soviet Film Archives has emerged revealing the true extent of the horrors before what we now know as the Holocaust. While we often think of the camp system as a killing machine of gas chambers at places like Auschwitz, this new film shows Germany was killing on a massive scale earlier than thought. There was another side to the killing, one that is rarely seen or talked about in the West. On the Eastern Front, the figure is estimated as being over one and a half million innocent people shot and buried in mass graves. When Doctor Jeremy Hicks, a Russian Film Historian, visited the Russian State Archive in 2006 what he saw took his breath away. He learned that locked away, there was unseen footage. It shows that the Holocaust wasn't just about industrialised killing, people actually came face-to-face with the perpetrators. This footage opens a new chapter, and it is truly shocking, so it was not an easy decision to show it you will be shocked when you watch it, but it is important that you do. These are the earliest films of the Holocaust, the initial stage, the mass killing by bullets. This preceded the construction of the camps, the gas chambers and crematoria.
An IRA film with a difference, Neil Jordan's The Crying Game takes the Anglo-Irish conflict as the starting point for a thoughtful, often poignant and sometimes humorous examination of gender and identity. Stephen Rea is the IRA volunteer who befriends a kidnapped British soldier (the gauche but likeable Forest Whitaker), then takes the questions of loyalty and instinct (the "frog and scorpion" fable) with him to London, where he falls for the dead man's girlfriend (the appealing Jaye Davidson). Love and terrorism are fused in a violent and suspenseful denouement, where truth manifests itself in an unexpected yet meaningful way. Miranda Richardson and Adrian Dunbar are persuasive as the IRA agents, and there are excellent cameos from Jim Broadbent as an East End barman and Tony Slattery as a property shark, all making the most of Jordan's stylish, Academy Award-winning script. Anne (Art of Noise) Dudley contributes a moodily atmospheric score, with three versions of "When a Man Loves a Woman" to point up the gender issue. On the DVD: The Crying Game comes to disc with a widescreen picture that reproduces adequately for an early 90s film. The soundtrack, though, has real presence. There are subtitles in English and Russian(!), though the theatrical trailer is hardly a major bonus. An interview or a commentary with Jordan, discussing the motivation behind the project, would really have benefited a film which cuts across genres so successfully as this. --Richard Whitehouse
