The Best Of The Worst Witch | DVD | (11/02/2002)

| RRP The Best of the Worst Witch DVD contains seven episodes of CITV's hugely popular Worst Witch series. Based Jill Murphy's internationally bestselling books that are said to have been an inspiration to JK Rowling and the Harry Potter books, the 25-minute episodes chronicle the hilarious adventures of would-be witch Mildred Hubble. Aimed at 5-11 year olds, the DVD starts with Mildred's first day at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches, a secondary boarding school which emphasises discipline and traditional values but which also teaches young girls how to ride broomsticks, chant and cast spells. Mildred gets off to a flying start when arriving late on her broomstick: she crashes into the school bins! The strong storylines (taken from three series) mainly focus on whether Mildred will make the grade as a bona fide witch, and her continuing rivalry with snooty Ethel Hallow. Whether Mildred is turning Ethel into a pig or being transformed into a frog, pre-teenagers will relate to the heroine, learning from her the importance of determination, imagination and friends. There are admirable performances from Georgina Sherrington (winner of Hollywood's "Young Artist Award") as Mildred, Kate Duchêne as the stern Miss Hardbroom, Claire Coulter as the kindly Headmistress and the renowned Una Stubbs as the eccentric Miss Bat who spends school holidays in the cupboard! The stories are not scary and the special effects are used sparingly but with good results--particularly spectacular is the image at the start of each episode of students arriving for school on broomsticks. Entertaining, amusing and captivating, it's a real treat for pre-teenagers. --Tracey Hogan.

I'm Gonna Git You Sucka | DVD | (12/04/2005)
from £8.39
| Saving you £0.59 (10.93%)
| RRP I'm Gonna Git You Sucka comes from Keenan Ivory Wayans--the man who brought us Jim Carrey (initially just one of the bunch on Wayans' US television comedy-sketch show, In Living Color)-- and is a comedy spoof on the blaxploitation films of the 1970s. Wayans plays Jack Spade, an army private just returning from the service. He comes home to find his younger brother June Bug dead of an overdose of gold chains (an "OG") He vows revenge, and with the help of some of the neighbourhood's old-skool heroes including Flyguy (Antonio Fargas), Kung Fu Joe (Steve James), Hammer (Isaac Hayes), Slammer (football star Jim Brown) and John Slade (Bernie Casey), Spade wages a war against Mr Big, the neighbourhood crime lord. In the tradition of Airplane! and Naked Gun, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka pokes fun through satire and offensive comedy. The film also features appearances from such varied actors as Clarence Williams III, Eve Plumb (better known to most as Jan Brady), and Chris Rock as a rib-joint customer. --Shannon Gee, Amazon.com

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum | DVD | (12/01/2004)
from £11.27
| Saving you £1.72 (15.26%)
| RRP The words of the opening song pretty much describe the menu in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum--"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!"--a frantic adaptation of the stage musical by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. The wild story, based on the Latin comedies of Plautus and set in ancient Rome, follows a slave named Pseudolus (Zero Mostel, snorting and gibbering) as he tries to extricate himself from an increasingly farcical situation; Mostel and a bevy of inspired clowns, including Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford and Buster Keaton, keep the slapstick and the patter perking. The cast also includes the young Michael Crawford as a love-struck innocent. This project landed in the lap of Richard Lester, then one of the hottest directors in the world after his success with the Beatles' films. Lester telescoped the material through his own joke-a-second sensibility, and also ripped out some of the songs from Stephen Sondheim's Broadway score. The result is very close to the vaudeville spirit suggested by the title--though anyone with a low tolerance for Zero Mostel's overbearing buffoonery may be in trouble. Oddly enough, amid all the frenzy, Lester creates a grungy, earthy Rome that seems closer to the real thing than countless respectable historical films on the subject. Frankie Howerd, who played Pseudolus on the London stage, kept the tradition going with his Up Pompeii TV series. --Robert Horton

Frank Sinatra - Sinatra | DVD | (19/11/2001)
from £11.34
| Saving you £3.65 (32.19%)
| RRP Here's Frank Sinatra in 1969 when, after a brief sortie into retirement mid-way through the decade, he returned with hit after hit culminating in "My Way", which is flagged here by audience applause in recognition of its current chart success (in Britain it was in the Top 50 for 122 weeks!). Don Costa, one of the least celebrated of Sinatra arranger/conductors, presides over a collection of songs that includes a contemporary group by Stevie Wonder, Rod McKuen and Jimmy Webb. Sinatra forsakes black tie and the formal studio surroundings for those songs, appearing in a Manhattan-style apartment dressed in casual white jumper, slacks and smoking a cigarette. But he's clearly less than engaged, and his eyes dip down to the autocue for lyrics new to him. His voice shows signs of that cigarette smoke, too: the opening of "For Once in My Life" sounds a bit rough, and he becomes audibly hoarse after the midway climax on "My Way", placed daringly as the third item on the programme. Two arrangements are different from the original studio recordings: there's a cut in the coda to "My Way", and in "My Kind of Town", the finale of the programme, there are some additional verses and a punchier accompaniment as Sinatra cues in the closing credits on screen. His line in self-deprecating humour is turned to advantage when, with the aid of clips, he reviews his early screen career ("I started in Higher and Higher and went lower and lower"). But never less than in full command of his stage act, he turns in vintage performances of "All the Way", "Fly Me to the Moon", "Love's Been Good to Me" and Victor Young's underrated "Street of Dreams". On the DVD: The picture quality in the opening songs comes over a mite bright owing to the studio lighting on the set which, at a certain angle, fogs the profile of the singer. The orchestral sound stands up well with the large string section making for a comfortable aural backdrop. The trailer builds up a keen sense of anticipation as Sinatra arrives at the studio by limousine to a silent soundtrack, walks onto an empty soundstage, throws his hat on a stool and then takes to the podium as the camera cuts to him singing "I've Got You Under My Skin" with full orchestra. Stills of the other Sinatra concerts are also featured.--Adrian Edwards
