  Recorded at the Maple Leaf in New Orleans - February 4th 1984The New Orleans club performance featured on this DVD highlights many facets of Gate's work and demonstrates his abilities both as the bluesiest fiddle player on the block and as a sharp-toned guitar master from the T-Bone Walker school. His percussive skin-on-guitar strings approach, together with the capo he clamps across the neck of his leather coated Gibson Firebird, speaks volumes about the influence Brown exercised over the younger Texan Albert Collins and perhaps explains why the seemingly made to measure instrumental Frosty is so easily accommodated here. Among the others who have paid homage to Gate are such important names as Guitar Slim, Otis Rush and Lonnie Brooks.

  The second film by the grandfather of surf films, Bruce Brown, Surf Crazy focuses on a surfing trip to Mexico in 1959, a time when surfing was so obscure that most of the Mexicans encountered along the Pacific shoreline had no idea why the crazy young Americans had long wooden boards strapped to the roof of their cars. The big problem with being a pioneer is that the subjects of Brown's film couldn't ask anyone where the good surfing spots were, so much of the film consists of the Americans riding rough unmarked roads in search of worthwhile waves. Brown appears on camera to explain that when this film was first shown in venues around California, he would appear onstage and narrate it. And a recording of his original narration, full of jokes both quirky and corny, accompanies the colour film footage in this version. The film itself sometimes shows its age, as scratches flicker past, but the colour is vibrant and the footage of surfers in an utterly pristine environment is often riveting. The second half of the film took Brown and his trusty camera to Hawaii, where surfers hit the waves at gorgeous Waimea Bay. Surf Crazy captures a beautiful golden era in the history of surfing, and even those who have never stepped on a board will find it very entertaining. --Robert J McNamara, Amazon.com

  San Francisco has been the setting of a lot of exciting movie car chases over the years, but this 1968 police thriller is still the one to beat when it comes to high-octane action on the steep hills of the city by the Bay. The outstanding car chase earned an Oscar for best editing, but the rest of the movie is pretty good, too. Bullitt is a perfect star vehicle for cool guy Steve McQueen, who stars as a tenacious detective (is there any other kind?) determined to track down the killers of the star witness in an important trial. Director Peter Yates (Breaking Away) approached the story with an emphasis on absolute authenticity, using a variety of San Francisco locations. Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Duvall appear in early roles, and Robert Vaughn plays the criminal kingpin who pulls the deadly strings of the tightly wound plot. --Jeff Shannon
