The Quiet Man (Dir. John Ford 1952): John Ford's The Quiet Man celebrates one of Hollywood's most romantic and enduring epics. The first American feature to be filmed in Ireland's picturesque countryside Ford richly imbued this masterpiece with his love of Ireland and its people. Though he is sorely tempted to pick up the gloves against her brother the town bully Sean is determined not to use his fists. Mary Kate and Sean wed but her brother refuses to pay the dowry. John Ford 1950): John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara are embroiled in an epic battle with the Apaches and each other in this John Ford classic. Lt Col. The Longest Yard: It was hard to put a team together... until they found out who they were playing. Director Peter Segal and comedian Adam Sandler join forces once more for a fun remake of the 1974 classic The Longest Yard. In the role of Paul ""Wrecking"" Crewe first immortalized by Burt Reynolds (who appears here as Nate Scarborough) Sandler plays an ex-football star whose career ended amidst allegations of point shaving. Fed up he drunkenly steals his unfriendly wife's (an uncredited Courtney Cox Arquette) luxury car and drives it into a multi-car pileup. This lands Crewe in a cruel Texas state penitentiary. His only respite comes from Warden Hazen (James Cromwell) who wants Crewe to help lead his well-equipped prison-guard football team to the league championship. Crewe timorously agrees suggesting the creation of an opposing team of convicts to the give the guards an easy tune-up before the season. To the ragtag inmates this is the chance they've been waiting for and they hustle to get their team together so they can exact some revenge on the harassing guards. (Dir. Peter Segal 2005) The Benchwarmers: Get off the bench and get into the game. Gus and his geeky buddies Richie and Clark are scouted by a millionaire geek Mel who wants to form a baseball team and compete with the meanest Little League teams in the state. A stellar ballplayer Gus becomes a role model for geeks and outcasts everywhere. But when his fans learn that Gus himself was once a school bully they feel outraged and betrayed until Gus takes extraordinary steps to win back their admiration and trust... (Dir. Abbott & Costello Classic Comedies three-disc collector's set consists of oddments from the latter days of their career that have fallen into public domain; which means you don't get their best routines or classiest productions, and indeed find the double act doing fairly tired schtick as Costello is chubbily chicken-hearted and Abbott grumpily money-grubbing. Africa Screams is a 1949 safari parody, with Costello running away yelping from sundry alligators, gorillas (including a Kong-sized giant), cannibals ("Chief have sweet tooth for little fat man") and lions amid backlot jungles as Abbott competes with stock villains for a fortune in diamonds. Jack and the Beanstalk, from 1952, finds the duo attempting to sell themselves as children's entertainers in a Wizard of Oz-influenced fairytale book-ended by sepia modern-day segments. The magical story unfolds in wonderfully gruesome cheap colour with some of the worst musical numbers ever committed to film ("he's perpendicular-la-la") as Jack the Clod (Costello) and Mr Dinkelpuss the Butcher (Abbott) climb the beanstalk and plod around the Giant's lair until the story runs out. Possibly the most interesting item is the third disc, which offers an episode of the Colgate Comedy Hour (aka The Abbott and Costello Show) from the 1950s. It shows the pair doing live routines closer to their original vaudeville act than their film roles (including an amazingly cruel bit in which Abbott slaps Costello every time he says the word "tin"). A loose plot about Latin American intrigue, with Lou hired to stand in for an assassination target "El Presidente", makes room for speciality guest stars ranging from child xylophonist Baby Mistin to four starlets (including Jane Russell and Rhonda Fleming) harmonising on a "Happy Easter" medley. Best of all, and now funnier than the comedy, are original hard-sell ads for household products like "Ajax, the foaming action cleanser" and "Halo, the shampoo that glorifies your hair". --Kim Newman
