His 17-year old daughter Milly (Jo Morrow) has reached an expensive age - so he accepts Hawthorne's (Noel Coward) offer of 0-plus a month and becomes Agent 59200/5 MI6's man in Havana. Lewis Gilbert) (1962): As commander of the British warship H.M.S. Defiant the humane Crawford (Guinness) strives to maintain order throughout the ship against the ceaseless brutality of sadistic first mate Scott-Padget (Dirk Bogarde). After Crawford is injured in a fiery battle with a French treasure ship angry seamen Vizard (Anthony Quayle) leads the crew to mutiny when Scott-Padget takes over. Now with Vizard in command Crawford persuades him to join the British fleet to help fight against France's planned invasion of England in hopes for a mutiny pardon. But when a vengeful sailor murders Scott-Padget the Defiant crew must decide between saving their country or their own lives. Cromwell (Dir. Ken Hughes) (1970): Disgusted with the religious policies of King Charles I Oliver Cromwell plans to take his family to the New World. But on the eve of their departure Cromwell is drawn into the tangled web of religious tension and political infighting that will result in the British Civil War... Bridge On The River Kwai (Dir. David Lean) (1957): The film deals with the situation of British prisoners of war during World War II who are ordered to build a bridge to accommodate the Burma-Siam railway. Their instinct is to sabotage the bridge but under the leadership of Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) they are persuaded that the bridge should be constructed as a symbol of British morale spirit and dignity in adverse circumstances. Murder By death (Dir. Robert Moore) (1976): The world's greatest detectives have been invited to dinner. But when murder is on the menu who will make it to dessert? You are cordially invited to join an all-star cast featuring Peter Sellers David Niven Peter Falk James Coco Elsa Lanchester Maggie Smith Alec Guinness Eileen Brennan Nancy Walker James Cromwell and Estelle Winwood for Neil Simon's hilarious murder-mystery spoof 'Murder By Death'. The isolated mansion of eccentric millionaire Lionel Twain (Truman Capote) is the setting for the twisted puzzler. Twain informs his guests that one of them will be murdered at the stroke of midnight. The pay-off: million to whoever lives through the night. 'Murder By Death' cleverly sends up both the mystery genre and the characterisations of a host of these instantly recognisable gumshoes. Match wits with the super sleuths but remember you can't win if you end up dying from laughter! The Prisoner (Dir. Peter Glenville) (1955): Two old pros light up the screen... The film is based on the real-life travails of Hungarian Cardinal Mindszenty who after suffering under Nazi persecution was imprisoned by the new Communist regime for remaining loyal to his religious convictions. Alec Guinness plays an unnamed Cardinal in an unspecified Eastern European country who is clapped into jail. Here he is ordered by the politicos to issue a phony statement to his flock one that will effectively end Catholicism in his country. Jack Hawkins plays the diabolically clever Interrogator who is almost successful in convincing Guinness that his false statement will have a beneficial effect...

  • The X Files: Season 9 [2003]The X Files: Season 9 | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £34.99

With so many promises to fulfil and questions left unanswered, the ninth and final series of The X-Files was inevitably going to short-change some of its audience. Mulder is missing, Scully is in and out with various baby concerns, Reyes frequently seems like she's only along for the ride and Doggett seems so right in the role that some fans wondered if he should have appeared sooner. Other cult cameos flitted across the screen in an attempt to keep viewers transfixed. Lucy Lawless, Cary Elwes and Robert Patrick's real-life wife were interesting diversions, but when Burt Reynolds appeared to be none other than God himself, it was apparent that nothing at all was sacred in this last year. Standalone episodes (for example, on Satanic possession and a Brady Bunch psycho) proved to be amongst the least interesting of the show's efforts. No doubt because everyone was focussing on the all-important arc story episodes. Was there more than one alien faction? Were they all in collusion? Who had control of the black oil virus? Who had been in charge of the abductions? More importantly, would Mulder and Scully finally get in bed together? Scattered through the 19 episodes (the fewest of any season), were answers to some of these points. Then as much as possible that remained was packed into the two-hour finale. After 200 episodes, it's just possible that The X-Files overstayed its welcome; nonetheless it will always be remembered for being the most influential TV product of the 1990s. And since this is science-fiction, don't assume it's completely dead either. --Paul Tonks

  • The Return Of The Pink Panther [1975]The Return Of The Pink Panther | DVD | (02/01/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £17.99

Peter Sellers's third go-around as the prideful but bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau in The Return of the Pink Panther is funny enough, but this 1975 Blake Edwards revival of the Sellers-Clouseau connection is a little weak in comparison to predecessors The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark (both made in 1964). Co-star Christopher Plummer actually gets some of the most interesting screen time as a retired cat burglar whom Clouseau accuses of getting back into the business. (If it sounds like there might be a To Catch a Thief vibe mixed in here, you're right.) Herbert Lom is hilarious as Clouseau's psychologically eroding boss, and Clouseau's ritualistic collisions with valet Cato (Burt Kwouk) are great examples of Edwards' delicious comic timing. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Titles Comprise: Get Carter (1971): Double Academy Award winner Michael Caine plays the relentless title character an ice-cold efficiently lethal London mobster investigating his brother's death in the seedy Newcastle underworld. Deliverence: Deliverance remains one of the screen's most powerful man vs. nature adventures and chronicles the journey of four Atlanta 'weekend warriors' who set off in canoes down a dangerous Georgia river and discover a wilderness of terror. John Boorman's taut direction builds the tension and fear to a raging climax as the men travel beyond their comfort zone and are forced to face more than they could have ever imagined. Vilmos Zsigmond's expert cinematography captures the wilderness of forest and river while Eric Weissberg's classic musical theme Dueling Banjos provides a perfect counterpoint to the action.
