CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITIES... From the hugely talented actor, writer and director Paul Mazursky (The Tempest, Harry and Tonto) comes Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, a classic comedy that hilariously probes the complicated relationship dynamics of the sexually liberated 1960s. Mazursky's sharp satire tells of Bob (Columbo regular Robert Culp) and Carol (Natalie Wood: West Side Story, Brainstorm), an affluent and hip Californian couple who return from a free-thinking, free-love retreat, intent on having an open relationship. The more conservative Ted (Elliot Gould: MASH, The Long Goodbye) and Alice (Dyan Cannon, Heaven Can Wait) enjoy hearing about their friends amorous adventures, but the cat is set amongst the pigeons when they are invited to join-in... in bed! A film that truly evokes the spirit of its age, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice was a huge hit with audiences and critics alike upon its original theatrical release. Benefitting from superb ensemble acting from its main players and a sublime score courtesy of Quincy Jones, it is no wonder that Mazursky s film was nominated for four Academy Awards. • Scorpio [1973]Scorpio | DVD | (02/02/2004) from £15.23   |  Saving you £-2.24 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Though not quite a classic, director Michael Winner's Scorpio is still an underrated espionage thriller that was well attuned to the political cynicism of its time. Burt Lancaster plays Cross, a CIA operative who dates back to the agency's earliest days as the OSS. Scorpio (Alain Delon) is a protégé of Cross, and one of Cross's best friends in a netherworld where everyone's allegiances, personal and political, are in question. Higher-ups within the intelligence agency decide that Cross knows too much and is better off eliminated; at first, Scorpio refuses the job until the CIA frames him on a phoney narcotics bust and coerces him into the assignment. The two men play a game of global cat-and-mouse as Cross consorts with his Russian counterparts--fellow ageing dinosaurs in a young man's game. Cross's links with the Russians go back to the days of the Spanish Civil War and the time when Cross was given the ironic label of "premature anti-Fascist" by the House Unamerican Activities Committee. The incredibly convoluted plot is rife with double-crosses and reverse double-crosses, in an environment in which nothing is quite as it seems and no one is to be trusted. Winner infuses enough energy and excitement into the film's many action segments to make Scorpio worthy of comparison to John Frankenheimer's best political thrillers. The director also throws in several curveballs, such as the zither music during a meeting in a Vienna café (shades of The Third Man) and the preposterous device of disguising Lancaster as an African-American priest. The best line must be "I want Cross, and I want him burned!" --Jerry Renshaw

Steeple Bassington England 1943. The United States Army Air Force's 8th Air Force 103rd Heavy Bombardment Group is mired in moral-lowering night-time bombing missions that are simultaneously dangerous and relatively ineffective against the German war-making machine. Commanding Officer Colonel Greg Brandon has repeatedly made requests to his superior General Palmer for consideration of an ambitious bombing plan: one thousand planes flown over Germany...in broad daylight. Now Supreme Allied Command is ready to listen and George must make his case―particularly to disapproving General Conway - for such a risky plan; a plan that could render the Army Air Force powerless should losses exceed Colonel Brandon's predictions. Hard-ass by-the-book Colonel Brandon gets the nod and he begins to re-build the sloppy 103rd trying to weed out the incompetents and cowards like Lieutenant Archer while pushing too hard against the rest. Colonel Brandon's growing doubt about the feasibility of his own plan isn't soothed by increasing tension between himself and lover WAC Lieutenant Gabrielle Ames and with the cheeky insubordination of banished RAF fighter pilot Wing Commander Trafton Taffy Howard.

  • The Anderson Tapes [Blu Ray] [Blu-ray]The Anderson Tapes | Blu Ray | (27/02/2017) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

An early example of the techno-thriller, The Anderson Tapes--sharply directed by Sidney Lumet from the novel by Lawrence Sanders--follows just-out-of-stir Duke Anderson (a balding Sean Connery) as he plots the heist of an entire New York apartment building, enlisting a crew that includes Martin Balsam as a vintage 1971 gay stereotype and a very young Christopher Walken in perhaps the first of his jittery crook roles. The gimmick is that Anderson has been out of circulation so long that he doesn't realise his mafia backers are only supporting him because they feel nostalgic for the days before they were boring businessmen and that the whole setup is monitored by a criss-crossing selection of government and private agencies who don't care enough to thwart the robbery, which instead becomes unglued thanks to a gutsy young radio ham. With a cool Quincy Jones score, very tight editing, a lot of spot-on cameo performances from the likes of Ralph Meeker as a patient cop, this hasn't dated a bit: it's wry without being jokey and suspenseful without undue contrivance. On the DVD The Anderson Tapes offers a nice anamorphic transfer, a few trailers and various foreign language options. --Kim Newman

  • Heaven Can Wait [1978]Heaven Can Wait | DVD | (24/12/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

The whimsical comedy-romance Heaven Can Wait is a delightful example of the small sub-genre of afterlife comedies. The film, which teams then lovers Warren Beatty and Julie Christie for a third time following McCabe and Mrs Miller (1971) and Shampoo (1975), is not a remake of the 1943 supernatural film of the same name, but of the Robert Montgomery classic Here Comes Mr Jordan (1941). Here Beatty is American football player Joe Pendleton, who accidentally dies, decades too early, and is incarnated in a new body which, until recently, was occupied by a ruthless multi-millionaire. James Mason is superb as a most authoritative angel (Mr Jordan), heading a fine cast including Charles Grodin, Buck Henry and Jack Warden. In a sub-plot paralleling The Shop Around the Corner (1940) and revisited in You've Got Mail (1998), Julie Christie plays an English woman outraged that one of the former millionaire's companies is destroying her village, while simultaneously falling in love with the man now occupying the hated millionaire's mortal coil. Much comic and romantic misunderstanding follows, as well as some appealing slapstick, courtesy of Dyan Cannon. Aided by a lovely musical score by Dave Grusin, this is a beautifully played and thoroughly charming bittersweet fantasy about the transcendent power of love. It is a joy for romantics everywhere. On the DVD: Heaven Can Wait comes to DVD in a good 1.77:1 ratio transfer which exhibits just a little grain in some darker scenes. The print shows some very minor, occasional damage, but nothing to complain about in a film of this vintage. The sound is the original mono mix, which is perfectly serviceable. The only extra is the theatrical trailer. --Gary S Dalkin
