Eureka Entertainment to release RUNNING ON KARMA, an offbeat murder-mystery helmed by acclaimed directors Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai, and starring Andy Lau. Available on Blu-ray from 27 January 2025 as part of The Masters of Cinema Series, in a Limited edition of 2000 copies exclusively featuring an O-card slipcase. The tenth film co-directed by Johnnie To (Running Out of Time) and Wai Ka-fai (Peace Hotel) following a string of collaborations that included comedies, romances, action films and historical epics, Running on Karma is a crime thriller with a distinctly Buddhist flare starring a titan of Hong Kong cinema in Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs). Big (Lau) was once a devoutly religious man, but turned away from his vocation as a Buddhist monk when he could no longer bear the weight of his unusual gift: the ability to see people's past lives and predict the impact of karma upon their present and future. Having found a new life as a bodybuilder, he is drawn to use his sixth sense for good after meeting Lee Fung-yee (Cecilia Cheung, The Legend of Zu), a cop investigating a homicide. But as the two grow closer and work together to catch a murderer, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Big can see Lee's past lives, too A film that balances genre thrills with deep philosophical questions on the nature of spirituality and faith, Running on Karma stands with Mad Detective as one of the most interesting and unique collaborations between Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai. The Masters of Cinema series is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time outside of Asia. In 'The Man from Utah' (1934) John Weston (Wayne) faces tough competition in a horse-riding rodeo as he comes up against riders who are prepared to do just about anything to make sure he doesn't take the crown. What Have I Done To Deserve This? is a perfect example of director Pedro Almodóvar's earlier work, containing all the elements which earned his films a cult international following. Starring the incomparable Carmen Marua as Gloria, a prescription drug addicted mother battling to make sense of her life and family as the world around her goes crazy. Intelligent, offensive, risqué, hilarious, eccentric, ironic, compelling, sad and sext, this early film shows Almodóvar's genius at it's more raw and untamed, his explosive energy shining through right to the last frame. Lady Of The Night is presented for the first time on DVD with three extra minutes previously cut by the UK censors. This is a typically Tintoesque (of the Brass variety that is) story of a young woman's search for sexual fulfilment starring Serena Grandi the voluptuous star of Tinto Brass' Miranda voted the sexiest woman in Italy. Simona is married to the neglectful Marco. Growing dissatisfied she provokes her husband by accepting the many sexual advances of friends and strangers alike. Taking on a variety of partners her behaviour leads to ever riskier and sometimes violent encounters. On one such night Marco catches Simona in the act and the couple separate. Despite being consoled by a beautiful young neighbour Marco finds that he cannot be without Simona. Then one night Simona is attacked by a masked man. But is he a stranger..?
The point of a good production of Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia is to have a Rosina and a Figaro who will knock your socks off in their respective arias, while holding back enough in all those crescendo ensembles in which the farce plot reaches its several culminations that the other stars get a chance to shine too. Cecilia Bartoli and Gino Quilico give full-blooded enough performances when on stage by themselves that self-effacement seems far from imminent, yet both are capable of less, and give it when it is needed. Of the others, David Kuebler is an attractively raffish Almaviva, while Robert Lloyd turns Basilio into a memorable cameo. Gabriele Ferro is one of the most intelligent of Rossini conductors--he understands the relationship between the pulse of the music and its dramatic function, and he is also outstanding in the delicacy of phrasing, even in climaxes, that ensures that every voice, every instrument, gets the moment of glory Rossini intended. Michael Hampe's solid reliable unfussy production keeps everything moving without drawing attention to itself. The DVD has subtitles in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, as well as trailers for other Arthaus Musik discs. --Roz Kaveney
Horror movie director José is adrift in a sea of doubt and drugs. As his belated second feature nears completion, his reclusive bubble is popped by two events: a sudden reappearance from an ex-girlfriend and a package from past acquaintance Pedro: a reel of Super-8 film, an audiotape, and a door key. From there, the boundaries of time, space, and sexuality are erased as José is once more sucked into Pedro's vampiric orbit. Together, they attempt the ultimate hallucinogenic catharsis through a moebius strip of filming and being filmed.
