Beloved father, husband and chairman of a lucrative trucking company, his heart failed him whilst ‘doing the nasty’ with his secretary… Eldest son Edward had just prepared to take over the business when the funeral delivered a shock. Robert had split his fortune four ways – to all three brothers and his secretary Jennifer. Edward is a chip-off-the-old-block, gruff and no nonsense. Brian is an accountancy wizard with a domineering wife. David is a “second class honours, first class layabout” arts graduate. And Jennifer has revealed the biggest secret of all – her and Robert’s love child. How will these unlikely bedfellows pull together to save the business and secure a profit? In this series mother Mary is determined to drive a wedge between the increasingly flirty Edward and Jennifer; strike action threatens the business; and the firm sinks deeper into debt.

There's trouble in the boardroom and the bedroom as tensions heat up while struggling to run the family business in the fourth series of this first-rate soap opera (Observer), featuring dramatic performances from fantastic acting talent including Jean Anderson, Richard Easton, Derek Benfield and Colin Baker Simply Media are delighted to announce the first DVD release of The Brothers: The Complete Series 4, containing all fourteen episodes of this television gem written and created by N. J. Crisp (Dixon of Dock Green) and Gerard Glaister (Dr. Finlay's Casebook), following the successful release of series 1-3 to date. Originally shown on BBC One's Sunday night spot in 1974, and proving to be one of the BBC's most popular drama series of the 1970s, this will be the first time fans of the long-running boardroom soap opera will be able to own this series on DVD. So popular was the series, a Christmas album entitled Christmas with the Hammonds was even recorded by the cast! Series 4 continues the dramatic story of the Hammond family and their trials and tribulations in attempting to run the family's lucrative trucking company Hammond Transport Services, inherited after the death of family patriarch Robert Hammond, who died while doing the nasty with his secretary. Tensions run high however when, unexpectedly, shares in the family business are split between all three brothers in the family, and also Robert's secretary and mistress Jennifer (Jennifer Wilson - Z Cars) meaning the family are forced into alliances that no one wants... The three brothers are also very different characters with different ideas on how to run the business, which leads to much conflict amongst the family. Edward (Patrick O'Connell - Fraud Squad) is a no nonsense, well-paid accountant who feels he was most qualified to run the whole business by himself, David (Robin Chadwick - Pride and Prejudice (1967)) is a disinterested second class honours, first class layabout arts graduate and playboy with a glamorous girlfriend (Gabrielle Drake), while Brian (Richard Easton - Finding Forrester) is a dull accountancy wizard with a controlling wife. Throw domineering mother Mary (Jean Anderson - The Railway Children) in to the mix and The Brothers delivered a winning formula of power struggles and family feuding that kept devoted fans coming back for more for the five years that the series aired. Doctor Who fans will also rejoice at the introduction of sixth incarnation of The Doctor Colin Baker to this series as the famously ruthless young city banker Paul Merroney, seen as a prototype for the new Thatcher-era inspired generation of corporate go-getters. So deplorable was his character, Paul Merroney was even voted the most hated man in Britain at the time by readers of The Sun. With gripping boardroom drama that would not be found on television today, family tragedy, financial struggles, secrets and betrayal all on the cards, this is a series that should not be missed by any fans of The Brothers, and is a great opportunity for any newcomers to the series to get stuck in to the woes of the Hammond family. Series 1-3 of The Brothers have already been released on DVD by Simply Media, with Series 5 planned for release 27th March 2017, and series 6 and 7 to follow during the rest of 2017.

  • Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake [1996]Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake | DVD | (20/07/1998) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £17.99

This Swan Lake was the unexpected popular hit of 1996, when radical choreographer Matthew Bourne took Tchaikovsky's traditional ballet by the scruff of the neck and reworked it with a myriad of modern influences and themes to astonishing effect. Seldom have the dark psychological riptides at the heart of so many classical ballets been so brilliantly exposed. The Prince (Scott Ambler) is a wretched and dissolute young man dominated by his mother, the Joan Collins-like Queen (Fiona Ambler). Shades of Tennessee Williams, indeed. Von Rothbart becomes a press secretary, more sinister éminence grise than hissable villain. Most startling of all, The Swan (Adam Cooper) is a muscular, emphatically masculine male. Bourne has stressed the universality of his interpretation, which proved such a success for his Adventures in Motion Pictures dance company. And indeed this is never an overtly "gay" Swan Lake, although the electricity of the pas de deux at the height of Act 2 delivers a palpably homoerotic charge. Its universal threads--as Bourne suggests, the need to be held and understood is common to us all--are synthesised in the utterly moving conclusion as the Swan cradles the lifeless Prince and raises him to a better place. Swan Lake becomes a human, rather than simply romantic, tragedy. On the DVD: Swan Lake is presented in full screen 4:3 video format and this version would certainly have benefited from widescreen to show off the dazzling court and night club scenes as well as the lake and the impact of the all-male swan corps de ballet. But the lush Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound serves the rich interpretation of Tchaikovsky's score from The New London Orchestra to handkerchief-wringing effect. Extras include menu-driven resumes and a synopsis. --Piers Ford

  • The Return Of Spinal Tap [1992]The Return Of Spinal Tap | DVD | (21/05/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

The Return of Spinal Tap is based around Tap's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1992. In between the footage of Messrs St Hubbins, Tufnell and Smalls performing in front of a huge crowd enthusiastically determined to go along with the joke, there are clips purporting to investigate the band's humble origins in the East London suburb of Squatney, and updates from "rockumentary" director Marty Di Bergi and hapless record plugger Artie Fufkin (from the original film). It is the latter component which is the real strength of Return. Though the concert footage faithfully rehashes many of the film's most treasured jokes (the malfunctioning props, the dancing midgets), the real satirical strength of This is Spinal Tap was never its treatment of heavy metal music (which, after all, is hardly a difficult target). What the first movie did best was illuminate the egomania, paranoia, delusion and stupidity that are the cornerstones of rock 'n' roll as it is lived. The Return of Spinal Tap is a worthy companion piece. --Andrew Mueller
