Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson yet again returns to Baltimore for inspiration with the semi-autobiographical Liberty Heights. Set in 1954, it tells the story of two young Jewish boys and their experiences of growing up in an America trying to come to terms with a changing society. The film focuses both on the sweet and innocent (the relationship between younger brother Ben and sole black student Sylvia) and the darker, more vicious side of a nation in flux. The evils of racism form a backdrop to all the intertwining plot lines--not only white against black but also widespread anti-Semitism. The young, largely unknown cast are all excellent--especially Adrien Brody and Ben Foster as the brothers and Rebecka Johnston as the quietly knowing Sylvia. Taking its cue from the great teen movies of the past, the film buzzes with the vitality of youth and of a generation on the verge of a new dawn (music plays a huge part), placing the political problems of the age in the context of adolescence to great effect. This is not Levinson's most high-profile work but certainly one of his best. On the DVD: The music of the period features heavily in the movie and dominates much of the action, so much so that it is possible to watch Liberty Heights with a music-only soundtrack. The film moves effortlessly between light and shade, both metaphorically and physically. Fair attempts have been made to provide an interesting set of extras: a gallery of interviews with the cast and director, deleted scenes and a very brief on-set documentary. --Phil Udell

The rock-umentary Nobody Someday both challenges and reaffirms everything we know, love and hate about Robbie Williams. Directed and narrated by Brian Hill, the man behind the infamous early-90s Australian docu-soap Sylvania Waters, the film is a frank representation of Robbie's 2001 European tour, which isn't always that sympathetic towards the star. Although Williams' continuous discussion about his shortcomings is at times endearing, his obsessive chattering and self-pity about his alcohol and drug problems soon sounds like a worn-out old record. It's also not always apparent when Williams is playing the fool and when he is not: the infamous hotel room scene, when Robbie convincingly rants to the camera about the German Chancellor commandeering his hotel suite, is a case in point. Shot in both colour and black and white, the film is a mix of some stunning live concert performance material and revealing behind-the-scenes footage. Key events featured include an obsessed fan pushing Williams off stage in Stuttgart, and the comical technical problems at the Paris gig. Despite the production's attempts to demystify star, it actually generates many more questions than it answers, adding further complexities to the brand/man known as Robbie Williams. On the DVD: Nobody Someday on DVD has a bonus quiz presented by Andy Franks, which features questions about the film. Each correct answer results in exclusive clips from the tour which didn't make it to the final cut of the film. These include Robbie declaring his undying love for his housemate and life-long pal Jonathan Wilkes, and exclusive live performances from the tour. There's also a bonus photo gallery, which features some stunning photographs taken by Scarlet Page and Diana Scrimegeour. --John Galilee

One of David Cronenberg's most successful early films, Rabid features porn star Marilyn Chambers as a woman who becomes infected with a virus after an operation. As result she grows a kind of phallus with which she penetrates her victims as she sucks their blood and thus the disease spreads rapidly. The film displays all Cronenberg's usual horrified fascination with the human body and its sexual function. Looking back, it can be read as a kind of parable about AIDS, but it works perfectly well as an effective low-budget shocker. On the DVD: the widescreen image on the DVD is acceptable quality, as is the sound. The fairly routine extras consist of excerpts from a TV interview with Cronenberg, lasting about 10 minutes; a collection of stills from the film; some written notes by horror expert Kim Newman that give useful background, though in part reproduce what is said in the interview; full filmographies for Cronenberg and the three principal performers, including a long list of Chambers' porn credits. --Ed Buscombe
