Lonely and frustrated by his small stature Lucas repeatedly takes his aggressions out on the colony leaving the ants running for their lives. Tired of the unprovoked attacks Zok (Nicolas Cage) an ant wizard devises a potion that will shrink the Destroyer down to their size so that he can stand trial for his actions. Soon Lucas is ant-sized and sentenced to live among the ants where he has to learn their ways in order to earn his freedom. Zok's ever cheerful girlfriend Hova (Julia Roberts) becomes Lucas's mentor teaching him the ways of the ant world and helping him gain a whole new perspective. He begins to understand the meaning of teamwork and how working with others can help an individual accomplish great things. He also learns that danger lurks everywhere for an ant: killer wasps hungry frogs even sunlight reflected off a mirror can mean certain death. Even worse before being shrunk Lucas was tricked into signing a contract with a slimy exterminator Stan Beals (Paul Giamatti) who will soon be returning to destroy the colony unless Lucas can find a way to stop him. An amusing smart script and likeable characters are hallmarks of this pleasant romp through a secret underground world.

Lilo is being raised by her older sister Nani (their parents died in an accident) and they are under surveillance by an evil social worker Cobra Bubbles who wants to take Lilo away from Nani. Lilo must tame Stitch or his bad behavior could be held against Nani by Cobra. Meanwhile Stitch is being pursued by his creator Jumba who has followed him to Earth to try to recapture him. But Stitch becomes steadily more thoughtful and well-behaved as he grows to love Lilo and becomes a part of her family. The film's animation is done in the traditional 2-D style complete with beautifully drawn watercolor backgrounds which give it a dreamy colorful handcrafted appeal.

  Quentin Tarantino came out of nowhere (i.e. a video store in Manhattan Beach, California) and turned Hollywood on its ear in 1992 with his explosive first feature, Reservoir Dogs. Like Tarantino's mainstream breakthrough Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs has an unconventional structure, cleverly shuffling back and forth in time to reveal details about the characters, experienced criminals who know next to nothing about each other. Joe (Lawrence Tierney) has assembled them to pull off a simple heist, and has gruffly assigned them colour-coded aliases (Mr Orange, Mr Pink, Mr White) to conceal their identities even from each other. But something has gone wrong, and the plan has blown up in their faces. One by one, the surviving robbers find their way back to their prearranged warehouse hideout. There, they try to piece together the chronology of this bloody fiasco--and to identify the traitor among them who tipped off the police. Pressure mounts, blood flows, accusations and bullets fly. In the combustible atmosphere these men are forced to confront life-and-death questions of trust, loyalty, professionalism, deception and betrayal.As many critics have observed, it is a movie about "honor among thieves" (just as Pulp Fiction is about redemption, and Jackie Brown is about survival). Along with everything else, the movie provides a showcase for a terrific ensemble of actors: Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen, Christopher Penn and Tarantino himself, offering a fervent dissection of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" over breakfast. Reservoir Dogs is violent (though the violence is implied rather than explicit), clever, gabby, harrowing, funny, suspenseful and even--in the end--unexpectedly moving. (Don't forget that "Super Sounds of the Seventies" soundtrack, either.) Reservoir Dogs deserves just as much acclaim and attention as its follow-up, Pulp Fiction, would receive two years later. --Jim Emerson

  Lovers of weepies might overlook the plot weaknesses of Here on Earth in favour of the strong performances and the prospect of a good cry. Slumming among the locals of a small New York town, Kelley Morse (Chris Klein)--graduating senior at a posh prep school and all-around insufferable rich kid--engages the testosterone of one of the hicks (Josh Hartnett) when he flirts with the guy's girlfriend, Samantha (LeeLee Sobieski). A car chase ensues, resulting in Samantha's family's diner getting blown up, which in turn lands the boys in hot water with the law. The upshot is the snotty rich kid is sentenced to help the locals rebuild the diner. A romance develops between Kelley and Samantha, apparently because they like a particular Robert Frost poem. So now they're deep, see. But then their love is tested when Samantha contracts Ali McGraw disease. You know, that's the sudden disease Ali McGraw gets in Love Story--really an excuse to emphasise the strength of the characters' love. You don't know what you got till it's gone, right? This film would be pretty bad if the performances weren't so engaging, especially LeeLee Sobieski's, who seems to be channelling Helen Hunt in this movie. However, Chris Klein never makes us believe for an instant that his arrogant character could make the changes he does, or that his and Sobieski's characters could ever really get together. The script is too thin to support any motivations and the film falls into formulaic weepy territory unlikely to appeal to teen tear ducts. --Jim Gay
