Jackie Brown - 2 Disc Collector's Edition | DVD | (16/09/2002)
from £N/A

| RRP The curiosity of Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown is Robert Forster's worldly wise bail bondsman Max Cherry, the most alive character in this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch. The film is more "rum" than "punch", though, with a slow, decaffeinated story of six characters glued to a half million dollars brought illegally into the country. The money belongs to Ordell (Samuel L Jackson), a gunrunner just bright enough to control his universe and do his own dirty work. His just-paroled friend Louis (Robert De Niro) is just taking up space and could be interested in the money. However, his loyalties are in question between his old partner and Ordell's doped-up girl (Bridget Fonda). Certainly Federal Agent Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) wants to arrest Ordell with the illegal money. The key is the title character, a late-40-ish flight-attendant (Pam Grier) who can pull her own weight and soon has both sides believing she's working for them. Tarantino changed the race of Jackie and Ordell, a move that means little except that it allows him to heap on black culture and language, something he has a gift and passion for, though the film is not a salute to Grier's blaxploitation films beyond the soundtrack. Unexpectedly the most fascinating scenes are between Grier and Forster: glowing in the limelight of their first major Hollywood film after decades of work. --Doug Thomas

What's Your Number? (DVD + Digital Copy) | DVD | (30/01/2012)
from £6.22
| Saving you £9.77 (157.07%)
| RRP Few actresses can play frothy and ditzy as well as Anna Faris, star of the fizzy What's Your Number?. Faris's easy ability to fly along on the wispiest of plot threads, staying likable all the way, is harder than it looks, and Faris's talent makes What's Your Number? a fun, saucy date-night trifle. Faris plays Ally Darling, a woman who's had 20 boyfriends, and makes the mistake of reading a women's magazine article that says that a woman who has had more than 20 lovers has a harder time ultimately marrying. Ally then wonders if one of her "magic 20" might have been The One, and sets about to track them all down. What's Your Number? has a talented cast surrounding Faris, including Blythe Danner as her wedding-obsessed mum, Joel McHale as a former boss (and possible new "number"), and the gorgeous Chris Evans as Colin, Ally's neighbour. Ally and Colin strike up a friendship while she tries to track down her exes, and of course the viewer can see they are perfect for each other long before the script allows them to. Faris and Evans are winning and cunning, and manage to rise above the script that emulates the raunch of Bridesmaids but mostly sidesteps that film's giant heart. But it's not for lack of Faris's trying--she's irresistible, hilarious, and touchingly vulnerable. Her performance in What's Your Number? is a perfect 10. --A.T. Hurley

Murder By Decree | DVD | (17/03/2003)
from £17.91
| Saving you £-4.92 (N/A%)
| RRP Murder by Decree has the distinction of being not only one of the best Sherlock Holmes films, but one of the best pastiches (i.e., a Holmes fiction created by someone other than author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) featuring the late-Victorian detective. Christopher Plummer is very good as Holmes, and James Mason redeems the many mishandled screen portrayals of Dr John Watson with a rare, insightful performance. The story may not be unique in post-Doyle Holmes adventures--the private investigator pursues Jack the Ripper during the latter's murderous reign in foggy London--but the script by John Hopkins (Thunderball) is keenly intelligent, developing concentric circles of power and evil with great subtlety. Before losing himself in Porky's, director Bob Clark did a masterful job of surprising audiences with Murder by Decree, convincing viewers they were watching one kind of drama but then unleashing something very different, very unsettling. --Tom Keogh

Matewan | DVD | (02/04/2001)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP A little-known chapter of American labour history is brought vividly to life in this period drama from writer-director John Sayles. It's a fictional story about labour wars among West Virginia coal miners during the 1920s, but every detail is so right that the film has the unmistakable ring of truth. The tension begins when the Stone Mountain Coal Company of Matewan, West Virginia, announces a lower pay rate for miners, who respond by calling a strike under the leadership of a United Mine Workers representative (Chris Cooper). Proving strength in numbers, the miners are joined by black and Italian miners who initially resist the strike, and a fateful battle ensues when detectives hired by the coal company attempt to evict miners from company housing. Violence erupts in a sequence of astonishing, cathartic intensity, and Matewan achieves a rare degree of moral complexity combined with gut-wrenching tragedy. The film salutes a pacifist ideal while recognising that personal and political convictions often must be defended with violence. To illustrate this point, Sayles enlisted master cinematographer Haskell Wexler, who creates the film's authentic visual texture--a triumph of artistry over limited resources. The result is a milestone of independent filmmaking, and Matewan remains one of Sayles's finest achievements. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
