Fairport Convention's annual festival in the otherwise sleepy Oxfordshire village of Cropredy has become a much-loved institution for their many fans, ever since the band first played there for a reunion gig after splitting up at the end of the 1970s. By 1998 when this concert was filmed they were enjoying new-found success, thanks to the continuing faith of the fans who just refused to let the band fade away--fashion and musical trends notwithstanding--and Cropredy had become a byword for the best in British folk-rock. Beyond the Ledge is a straightforward account of their Cropredy concert, interspersed with a few brief comments from crowd members. As ever, the yearly Cropredy gig amounts to a "greatest hits" show. Newcomer Chris Leslie was just finding his feet with the band in 1998 and had yet to make his mark as a songwriter (he achieved that on their album The Wood and the Wire), so here much is made of their impressive back catalogue, including Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", their increasingly baroque arrangement of the traditional ballad "Matty Groves" (now a climactic showpiece medley) and of course Richard Thompson's evergreen anthem, "Meet on the Ledge". But the highlights are the instrumental numbers where the band get to show off their virtuosity: fiddlers Leslie and Ric Sanders play jigs and reels with improvised abandon, locking together or trading riffs with one another while Dave Pegg's marvellously fluid bass holds everything together. As with any concert video, it's always going to be more fun for those who were there, but most Fairporters will have made the pilgrimage to Cropredy at least once, so they'll understand what it's all about. Non-initiates may be forgiven for being puzzled by the sight of these middle-aged folk-rockers inhaling helium from balloons before breaking into a traditional jig. --Mark Walker

Disney couldn't resist the temptation to remake 1961's popular comedy The Absent Minded Professor, so they cast Robin Williams as Professor Philip Brainard (a role vaguely related to the character originated by Fred MacMurray), and the result is a comedy that, frankly, doesn't fully deserve its modest success. It's admittedly clever to a point, and certainly the digitally flubberised special effects provide the kind of movie magic that's entertaining for children and adults alike. The professor can't even remember his own wedding day (much to the chagrin of his fiancée, played by Marcia Gay Harden), and now his academic rival (Christopher McDonald) is trying to steal his latest and purely accidental invention-flying rubber, or ... flubber. The green goo magnifies energy and can be used as an amazing source of power, but in the hands of screenwriter John Hughes it becomes just another excuse to recycle a lot of Home Alone-style slapstick humour involving a pair of bumbling would-be flubber thieves. There's also a floating robot named Weebo and some catchy music by Danny Elfman to accompany dancing globs of flubber, but the story's too thin to add up to anything special. Lightweight fun, but, given the title, it lacks a certain bounce. Of course, that didn't stop Disney's marketing wizards from turning it into a home video hit. --Jeff Shannon

It must be stressed that despite the fact that it was produced in 1973 and stars both Christopher Lee and Britt Ekland, The Wicker Man is not a Hammer Horror film. There is no blood, very little gore and the titular Wicker Man is not a monster made out of sticks that runs around killing people by weaving them into raffia work. Edward Woodward plays Sergeant Howie, a virginal, Christian policeman sent from the Scottish mainland to investigate the disappearance of young girl on the remote island of Summer Isle. The intelligent script by Anthony Schaffer, who also wrote the detective mystery Sleuth (a film with which The Wicker Man shares many traits), derives its horror from the increasing isolation, confusion and humiliation experienced by the naïve Howie as he encounters the island community's hostility and sexual pagan rituals, manifested most immediately in the enthusiastic advances of local landlord's daughter Willow (Britt Ekland). Howie's intriguing search, made all the more authentic by the film's atmospheric locations and folkish soundtrack, gradually takes us deeper and deeper into the bizarre pagan community living under the guidance of the charming Laird of Summer Isle (Lee, minus fangs) as the film builds to a terrifying climax with a twist to rival that of The Sixth Sense or Fight Club. --Paul Philpott
