However, it wasn't just fate that brought them here, but an evil force in need of resurrection, a blood craving beast known only as Count Dracula, Prince Of Darkness. Released in 1966 this is Christopher Lee's second outing as Dracula, with Hammer Films pushing the cinematic boundaries of graphic gore and terror.

  It wasn't until the beginning of Stargate SG-1's fourth season that fans knew to take the Replicator threat seriously. The spidery nasties had only seemed like one of many new enemies introduced in previous years. But when the one seemingly omnipotent backbone of the galaxy was asking Earth for help, clearly we were in real trouble! In fact, the team's list of enemies expanded and got far more complicated this year. Proving without a shadow of a doubt that this is science fiction, the Russians reveal they have their own Stargate program and ask the Americans for help. This twist allows for exploration of all the political machinations occurring behind the scenes of the SG-C, all of which appear to stem from the embittered Senator Kinsey (Ronny Cox). There were quite a few Earth-based stories in the year, but not all the new enemies were originally local. Willie Garson comically guest-starred as Martin, a geekily suspicious guy with too much knowledge of the Stargate. More sinister was an old flame of Daniel's turning into something far more painful than an old wound (thanks to an ancient Egyptian curse). Thankfully, the writers hadn't forgotten the importance of one-off storylines too. In "Upgrades" the team learns a lesson in abuse of power. In "The Other Side" (featuring DS9's Rene Auberjonois) they learn about blind trust. In "Scorched Earth" a dangerous claim for a planet's ownership means they learn to value Daniel's contribution to the group dynamic. If only this last lesson were learned better, season 5 might not have ended up as muddled as it did. --Paul Tonks

  As the third in what became a series of eight, Prince of Darkness was distinguished among the Hammer Dracula movies for several reasons. It was the third and last directed by Terence Fisher and his familiarity with the mythos and studio practices meant the rushed production still came out looking spectacular in places. Moving into the tail end of the 1960s, Hammer looked for ways of cost cutting: the film's dramatic finale on a frozen river takes place on a two-for-one set being used simultaneously for another shoot. This was also the series entry that included a substitute for the Renfield character missing from the first movie. Thorley Walters as Ludwig is a colourful cameo and that's also all that can be said of Christopher Lee. Despite top billing, the mute monster occupies but a fraction of the overall on-screen time. The real frights come from gaunt butler Klove who scares the life (literally) out of hapless travellers Alan, Charles, Helen and Diana. Surely their fate would ensure no-one else took the mountain pass to Carlsbad? But only two years later, audiences discovered Dracula Has Risen from the Grave. On the DVD: apart from scene access there's nothing making use of the DVD format here. The 2.55:1 presentation is certainly welcome, and the mono audio somehow feels appropriate. --Paul Tonks

Flitting from one boho pad to another in his fully functional babe wagon - a white Triumph - he leaves his mark (sometimes literally) on a variety of beautiful women of all ages nationalities colours and shapes. The lucky ladies include later Gothic Goddesses Madeleine and Mary Collinson (Twins Of Evil) Annabel Leventon (Rocky Horror Strike It Rich Penmarric Armchair Theatre) and a young Nicola Pagett (Privates On Parade A Bit Of A Do Avengers Whodunnit Viking Queen Frankenstein The True Story) There's also a fully clothed (what do you mean damn?) appearance from Hammer scream queen Madeleine Smith (The Vampire Lovers Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell Tam Lin Theatre Of Blood) as the delectable daughter of one of Peter's classy conquests. With a superb pop-psych-bubblegum-library freakout soundtrack and some choice locations this is the film for anyone who wants to indulge in unadulterated enjoyment albeit with a twist. As director Donovan Winter put it it's like Alfie with more sex and here more is definitely what you get. Anyone seeking intellectual stimulation or 'pure cinema' can retire to the corner on the other side of the room where they can eulogise about Citizen Kane to their heart's content but in the meantime we're going to have some fun...and like Peter himself we'll come back many many times... Also included is Winter's early 40-minute featurette A Penny For Your Thoughts (1966) which again set to some of the grooviest tunes of the era tells us exactly what women talk about when the chaps aren't there...or do they? Starring Monty Python starlet Carol Cleveland Britsploitation heroine Sheila White (Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush Confessions On The Buses) and character actress Yvonne Antrobus (Dr Who Wessex Tales Target) among the fillies in frillies.
