It begins in Arizona when three college friends Beau Cassy a student teacher and Pitt a four-year medical student discover a meteorite - stinging hot to the flesh - in the parking lot of a Phoenix diner. Within hours of touching it Beau falls ill with strange flu-like symptoms that defy rational diagnosis. By the following morning he has not only recovered but feels euphoric. In fact he feels changed. But Beau isn't the only one who has undergone the transformation. The strange flu has spread rapidly affecting each victim with the same inexplicable exhilaration. The phenomenon inspires Beau to team with a billionaire entrepreneur to develop The Institute for a New Humankind. It's a chance for its newly-illuminated members to experience the world as they never have before - and change it. Cassy and Pitt suspicious of Beau's newfound cult are compelled to investigate. What they uncover is unfathomable but terrifyingly real: the virus is an alien intelligence systematically infecting the bodies and minds of everyone on Earth. Their attempt to solicit help from the Centre of Disease Control elicits only fear. For the CDC along with the police are already among the changed. Tracking the course of the meteorite assault over the Internet it's up to Cassy and Pitt to stop it. Their underground fight takes them to an isolated government germ warfare base where a secret portal to another world - and a life-or-death confrontation with Beau the leader of the new alien race - awaits them.

  • Dolly Parton - Blue Valley Songbird [1999]Dolly Parton - Blue Valley Songbird | DVD | (25/06/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

In a totally unexpected piece of casting, Blue Valley Songbird stars Dolly Parton as a country singer/songwriter with big hair, large breasts and lots of lippy. The comparison ends there, though, because here she plays Leana Taylor, a talented performer hampered by her provincial background (and unpleasant manager/boyfriend) who realises she must escape her small-town roots in order to achieve her true potential. This isn't the most taxing of narratives, but it's the music that counts here. This movie is of the "musical drama" genre--take a star musical performer, give them the lead role in a movie, then furnish them with every excuse to perform therein so long as it can be done as a realistic element within the overall story--and as such it's highly agreeable. Parton not only has buckets of musical talent but also has plausible acting skills, even if the viewer is bound to think that these are mainly to do with being Dolly Parton. In any event, the songs are excellent, so this is well worth watching even if you find yourself fast-forwarding until you see someone picking a guitar up.--Roger Thomas

  • Never The Twain - The Complete Series 1Never The Twain - The Complete Series 1 | DVD | (04/06/2001) from £20.00   |  Saving you £-7.01 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Remarkably, the Johnny Mortimer-scripted series Never the Twain ran to over 50 episodes between 1981 and 1984 on ITV. It starred Donald Sinden as Simon Peel, a stuffy, upper-middle class antiques dealer who lives next door to Oliver Smallbridge (Windsor Davies of It Aint Half Hot, Mum fame), a working-class lad made good, also in the antiques trade. As the first series establishes, theirs is a prickly relationship, not just because theyre rivals in trade but also rivals for the affections of the middle-aged, comely Veronica. They are aghast when they discover their respective son and daughter plan to marry, coming on like the Capulets and Montagues of Middle England. Never the Twain is a pleasantly predictable antique of the sitcom variety, redeemed by Sinden and Davies gruff, blustery and persistent antagonism. It depicts a cosy, never-never world of "dirty weekends", huge suburban houses, borderline homophobic mirth and reliable puns on "genes" and "jeans"--the sort of series in which characters greet surprising news by spraying a mouthful of tea halfway across the room. Some will find it barely endurable, others a welcome reminder of a bygone televisual era before alternative comedy became the ubiquitous norm. This DVD contains an episode guide and picture gallery. --David Stubbs
