  Boasting superlative make-up and special effects by gore guru Tom Savini Joseph Zitos The Rosemary's Killer was amongst the first of the 1980s cycle of slasher movies and remains one of the sub-genres pinnacle points. The story opens in the 1940s just after the end of WWII and a solider receiving a letter to inform him that his girlfriend has found a new flame. The girl and her new beau are at the local college graduation dance but decide to go outside for a walk and to fool around. They are brutally killed but their murderer is never found. Resultantly the town does not hold another graduation dance for over 40 years. The film skips forward in time to the preparations for the newly reinstated dance but somebody cant forget the past and wants to make sure nobody else does either. Soon a mysterious figure in an military uniform begins to dispatch the college students in various blood-splattered ways. Featuring cameos from acting legends Farley Granger and Lawrence Tierney Rosemary's Killer is elevated above the numerous other entries to the slasher cycle that followed by high production values a picturesque setting and perhaps most notably by Savinis aforementioned and highly original and spectacularly gruesome work.

Playing an emotionally immature Chicago advertising executive, Hanks offers a prototype of his later, better role in Big--the joking man-child with seemingly limitless reserves of energetic humour, perfectly suited to director Garry Marshall's trademark blend of featherweight comedy and sentiment. The movie wanders aimlessly before settling into its dramatic groove, involving Hanks caring for his ageing, diabetic father (Jackie Gleason, well cast in his final screen role) after his mother (Eva Marie Saint) files for divorce and strikes out on her own. Like Marshall's Pretty Woman, the film hits several grace notes and finds unexpected depth in its characters and their need for loving connections.   The foundation stone of the Troma label's trash-movie empire, The Toxic Avenger introduces the character of nerdy janitor Melvin, who suffers heaps of abuse from local bad-guys and is stuffed into a vat of toxic waste while dressed in a ballerina outfit. He emerges mutated into a Swamp Thing/Hulk-style monster hero who romps around the blighted township of Tromaville, New Jersey, offing the grotesque villains in nastily gruesome ways and mooning over his blind true love. The Troma style is unique, and perhaps predates the anything-gross-for-a-laugh approach of the Farrelly Brothers by a good 10 years, but it sometimes wavers between the good-natured gags and genuinely unpleasant plot images that somewhat spoil the tone. Entry-level filmmaking, but with surprisingly professional head-squashing effects and a degree of enthusiasm that breaks down most resistance.
