Jean-Claude Van Damme, aka "the Muscles from Brussels", has sought to revitalise his flagging career by working with the most adrenalised directors from Hong Kong action films. His first such effort was this, the umpteenth remake of The Most Dangerous Game, which teamed him with Hong Kong's most fluid action poet, John Woo (director of M:I2). Woo does what he can but, as much magic as he injects into the action, he can't turn Van Damme into an actor. Still, this is above-average fare for the wooden Belgian, in which he plays a guy trying to bust a ring of hunters who pay for the right to track and kill human quarry. And Woo has the ever-reliable Lance Henriksen as the chief bad guy, always a plus. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com
Barbarella is marked by the same audacity and originality, fantasy, humor, beauty and horror, cruelty and eroticism that make comic books such a favorite. The setting is the planet Lythion in the year 40,000, when Barbarella (Jane Fonda) makes a forced landing while traveling through space. She acts like a female James Bond, vanquishing evil in the forms of robots and monsters. She also rewards, in an uninhibited manner, the handsome men who assist her in the adventure. Whether she is wrestling with Black Guards, the evil Queen, or the Angel Pygar, she just can't seem to avoid losing at least part of her skin-tight space suit!

Upon receiving news that his brother in Los Angeles is seriously injured, Lyon Gaultier (Van Damme) deserts the French Foreign Legion from a remote outpost in North Africa. Will Hay (Dandy Dick The Goose Steps Out) plays a disbarred solicitor who with the help of Claude (Claude Hulbert) embarks on a frantic chase in pursuit of a psychopathic murderer newly released from prison. The prisoner is working through a vengeance list with Claude's name near the top... Directed by Basil Dearden and Will Hay My Learned Friend offers a fascinating insight into the direction Will Hay might have taken if ill health had not caused this Ealing picture to be his last. The tone is much darker than his previous films and the humour much of it revolving around a sequence of grisly murders foreshadows the blackest of Ealing's post-war comedies such as Kind Hearts and Coronets.
