From the writers of Peep Show and The Thick of It comes a new comedy about settling into old age with style. Housemates Tom and Roy are the ying to each other's yang. Roy is well-read organised clean and sensitive. Tom well isn't. As both of them settle into retirement they are faced with the prospect of life simply not turning out quite how they imagined. Together however they manage to muddle through life - answering the important questions that retirement poses. Questions involving religion true-love and precisely how early is too early to start drinking in the day. Original funny and only a little distasteful this new comedy takes a fresh look at retirement and the joys of growing old disgracefully.

  • Lord Peter Wimsey - Clouds Of Witness [1972]Lord Peter Wimsey - Clouds Of Witness | DVD | (08/04/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Based on the series of novels written by Dorothy L Sayers in the 1920s and 30s, Lord Peter Wimsey was dramatised for TV by the BBC between 1972-5. Ian Carmichael, veteran of British film comedy, played the genial, aristocratic sleuth; Glyn Houston was his manservant Bunter. The pair are similar to PG Wodehouse's Jeeves and Bertie Wooster (whom Carmichael played in an earlier TV adaptation) though here the duo are equal in intelligence, breezing about the country together in Wimsey's Bentley and stumbling with morbid regularity upon baffling murder mysteries to test their wits. Those for whom this series forms hazy memories of childhood might be surprised at its somewhat stagy, lingering interior shots, the spartan paucity of music, the miserly attitude towards locations, especially foreign ones, and the rather genteel, leisurely pace of these programmes, besides which Inspector Morse seems like Quentin Tarantino in comparison. It seems that initially the BBC was reluctant to commission the series and ventured on production with a wary eye on the budget. The Britain depicted by Sayers is, by and large, populated by either the upper classes or heavily accented, rum-do-and-no-mistake lower orders, which some might find consoling. However, the acting is generally excellent and the murder mysteries are sophisticated parlour games, the televisual equivalent of a good, absorbing jigsaw puzzle. There were five feature-length adaptations in all. "Clouds of Witness" sees Wimsey investigate the death of his brother the Duke of Denver's fiancée. --David Stubbs

Clockers (Dir. Spike Lee 1995): When there's murder on the streets everyone is a suspect. A gritty realistic adaptation of Richard Price's best-selling novel director Spike Lee examines the violent world of urban drug dealing through the eyes of Strike (Mekhi Phifer) a 19-year-old ""clocker "" short for round-the-clock pusher. Strike agrees to kill a fellow employee of his boss Rodney Little (Delroy Lindo) an influential popular drug lord. But when the hit goes down it is Strike's moral law-abiding brother Victor (Isaiah Washington) who confesses shocking everyone. The detective assigned to the case Rocco Klein (Harvey Keitel) doesn't believe Victor - the more that Klein along with others in Strike's life start putting the heat on the more the clocker finds himself up against the wall. The question is: Who is the real killer? Shot on location in New York City and Mexico. 'Clockers' was originally supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese with Robert DeNiro in the role of Rocco Klein. The pair decided to film 'Casino' instead and Lee stepped in - Scorsese remained a producer. Inside Man (Dir. Spike Lee 2006): It looked like the perfect bank robbery. But you can't judge a crime by its cover. Acclaimed actors Denzel Washington Clive Owen and Jodie Foster come together to explore the lure of power the ugliness of greed and the mystery of a perfect robbery in a combustible new crime drama from Spike Lee. The hardbitten but unorthodox Detective Fraiser (Washington) pits his wits against a high-class bank robber Dalton Russell (Owen) following the robbery of a Manhattan bank. As the chase unfolds political corruption and hidden agendas threaten to destabilise an already volatile situation.
