Is the story of a brutal king and the bloody barbarian wars that tore through Europe in 1183AD. With stunning battle scenes and an incredible cast this is the must see historical film of 2012. In the waning years of his life, but no less brutal for it, King Henry II (Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Patrick Stewart, (X-Men, Star Trek, Moby Dick, King of Texas, Family Guy) is holding Christmas court at Chinon, during which he’ll announce the blood successor to his throne. Assembled for this event are his equally calculating wife, Eleanor of Acquitaine (Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs, Fatal Attraction, Damages), imprisoned for ten years by her husband for a political coup of her own; his shamelessly flaunted mistress, Alais (Julia Vysotskaia), and her venomous brother, King Philip of France (Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Mission Impossible III, Bend it like Beckham Velvet Goldmine); and Henry’s three sons, Prince Richard the Lionhearted (Andrew Howard, Band of Brothers), who can’t fathom the depth of leadership, the shallow Prince Geoffrey (John Light, Dracula 2), and the luckless and bumbling Prince John (Rafe Spall, The Calcium Kid). What the three siblings share is a gift for treachery.

Jagged Edge was one of a series of entertaining if porous thrillers crafted by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas before he wrote the ridiculous Showgirls. This 1985 movie is a taut mystery about an attorney (Glenn Close) who defends a newspaper publisher (Jeff Bridges) accused of murder. The fact that Close's character falls for him is more convenient than plausible, but it is a necessary emotional bridge for Eszterhas and director Richard Marquand (Eye of the Needle) to build toward a powerful finale. Scary, fun as courtroom dramas go, the film is well serviced by the two lead stars and has impressive support from co-star Peter Coyote and especially from Robert Loggia, who plays Close's cop buddy. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • The Natural [1984]The Natural | DVD | (28/05/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Director Barry Levinson treats The Natural as a kind of shrine to America's national pastime, baseball, complete with all the possible mythic resonance that can be gleaned from the subject. Fans of the Bernard Malamud novel may be dismayed, but anyone who fell for the similarly mythic Field of Dreams will be hooked. Levinson displays an unabashed devotion to the game, although the film could use more of the realities of chewing tobacco and pine tar. The story opens as a young man (Robert Redford, in soft lighting) emerges from the sun-dappled heartland as maybe the best baseball player anybody's ever seen. On his way to the majors, he is waylaid by an enigmatic black widow (Barbara Hershey) and vanishes for many years. When he re-emerges, a silent mystery, he lands a spot with a New York team and begins tearing up the league--he's still the natural. Redford is fine, and Kim Basinger and Oscar-nominated Glenn Close are effective as the women in his life. The crowning touch is the soaring, extraordinary music by Randy Newman, the singer-songwriter turned orchestral composer. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com
