James Clavell's The Last Valley is a heartfelt film of paradise found and lost in the midst of the bloody Thirty Years War, a senseless religious conflict long since degenerated into a rabble of looters preying on peasants. It's also a triumph of passion over style. Michael Caine stars as the Captain, a happily tolerant leader whose army of mercenaries--a mix of Protestants and Catholics--murders, pillages and rapes side by side for whichever faction is paying more at the time. Omar Sharif is Vogel, a lone refugee whose flight from the marauding band leads them all to a beautiful village in the mountains. The Captain and Vogel make an unlikely pair: the shrewd mercenary with the dream of peace, and the philosopher-peasant hanging on to his own life in the face of certain death--and their alliance to preserve this Eden and her people stands in contrast to the soldiers who soon become splintered by greed, lust and religious zealotry. Clavell isn't exactly subtle, but his sense of irony is biting: one Christian soldier is ready to lead a mob in righteous battle after a perceived blaspheme, and in the next scene attacks and rapes an innocent Christian maiden he's sworn to protect. The film falters in clumsy battle scenes and awkward dramatic staging, but Caine's complex characterisation of the guarded Captain and Sharif's haunted performance keep the story alive, and the beautiful photography fixes the film like a jewel into its setting. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

TV drama following the turmoil of football club Manchester United through the Munich air disaster that killed a number of its staff and star players. In February 1958 a flight leaving Munich-Riem Airport crashed on its third attempt to take off. On board were the famous 'Busby Babes', a team of gifted young players led by the famous manager Matt Busby, returning to Manchester after successful qualification to the European cup semi-finals. A number of players, including Duncan Edwards, were killed in the crash, and still more injured. This BBC dramatisation of events follows star player Bobby Charlton (Jack O'Connell) and coach Jimmy Murphy (David Tennant) as they attempt to recover from the crash. With Busby (Dougray Scott) still hospitalised with his injuries and so many of their players gone, stand-in coach Murphy and the still-grieving Charlton will be crucial to the success on the field that would honour those so tragically lost.

Hands down, this is the best movie (and was one of the first) to come out of the seemingly endless cycle of disaster movies that dominated box offices during the 1970s. It could even be argued that Titanic owes some of its success to the precedent set by this 1972 blockbuster starring Gene Hackman as a priest who leads a small group of survivors to safety from the bowels of a capsized luxury liner. From its stellar cast to its cheesy, Oscar-winning theme song, The Morning After, the movie has all the ingredients of a popular classic, beginning with a New Year's Eve celebration aboard the ill-fated Poseidon and ending as a pop allegory when the Hackman character becomes a Christ-like martyr. Filmed on spectacular sets where everything down is up and the ship's thick hull points in the direction of salvation, this is "a waterlogged Grand Hotel" (in the words of New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael) that is as entertaining as it is unabashedly brainless. The Poseidon Adventure is filled with performances that rise above the limits of the screenplay. It's also the only movie--unless you count her underwater corpse in Night of the Hunter--that lets Shelley Winters strut her stuff as an aquatic heroine. Who could ask for anything more? --Jeff Shannon

Simply Media are delighted to announce the first DVD release of The Brothers: The Complete Series 5, containing all 13 episodes of this television gem written and created by N. J. Crisp (Dixon of Dock Green) and Gerard Glaister (Dr. Finlay's Casebook), following the successful and popular release of series 1-4 by Simply Media to date. Originally shown on BBC One's Sunday night spot in 1975, and proving to be one of the broadcaster's most popular drama series of the 1970s, this will be the first time fans of the long-running boardroom soap opera will be able to own this series on DVD. Series 5 continues the dramatic story of the Hammond family who are left to manage the lucrative Hammond Transport Services, inherited from the family patriarch Robert Hammond, who died while doing the nasty with his secretary. Tensions run high when shares in the family business are unexpectedly split not just between all three brothers in the family, but also with Robert's secretary Jennifer (Jennifer Wilson - Z Cars). Each shareholder has different ideas on how to run the business. Edward (Patrick O'Connell - Fraud Squad) is a no nonsense, well-paid accountant who feels he was most qualified to run the whole business by himself; David (Robin Chadwick - Pride and Prejudice (1967)) is a disinterested second class honours, first class layabout arts graduate and playboy with a glamorous girlfriend (Gabrielle Drake); while Brian (Richard Easton - Finding Forrester) is a dull accountancy wizard with a controlling wife. Throw domineering mother Mary (Jean Anderson - The Railway Children) in to the mix and The Brothers delivers a winning formula of power struggles and family feuding that kept fans devoted. Tensions reach fever pitch in Series 5 with the introduction of Kate O'Mara (Doctor Who) as the no-nonsense, tough boss of an airfreight business Jane Maxwell. Her arrival sparks a memorable and entertaining rivalry with the equally ambitious, ruthless city banker Paul most hated man in Britain Merroney played by Colin Baker (Doctor Who). Fascinating fact for you: O'Mara and Baker's on-screen rivalry sparked off in The Brothers would continue in another face off, this time on the set of Doctor Who where Baker played the sixth incarnation of The Doctor and O'Mara was cast as evil Time Lady 'The Rani'. With gripping boardroom drama, unlike anything you'll find on television today, family tragedy, financial struggles, secrets and betrayal, this is a series that should not be missed by any fans of The Brothers. And, it's a great opportunity for series newcomers to get stuck in to the ways and woes of the alluring Hammond family.
