Based on the memoirs of party-girl-turned-conservationist Kuki Gallman, I Dreamed of Africa never comes close to living up to its title; the mood is more prosaic travelogue than oneiric wonderment. After a car accident warns Kuki of her mortality, she resolves to grow up, a process that mysteriously involves marrying a man she barely knows and moving with him and her young son to the wilds of South Africa. There she learns new beau Paolo is less reliable than she thought, but also that the sun-baked plains and roaming beasts of Africa speak to her in a way the nightlife of Italy did not. (We learn of her blossoming humanity because she introduces herself to the servants; a probing study of interpersonal relationships this isn't.) Kim Basinger obviously feels connected to the role--she can stride across a room with a majestic self-righteousness that the film should have drawn upon more--but she's defeated by a script composed of repetitive vignettes that have no cumulative effect and a director (Hugh Hudson) who keeps the film's emotional impact curiously flat and diffuse except for the crass, manipulative moments every 20 minutes or so. Sure the photography's lovely, but really, how hard is it to get a nice shot of flamingoes at dawn? --Bruce Reid, Amazon.com
From visionary director Emerald Fennell (Killing Eve) comes a delicious new take on revenge. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.

On the Utah-Nevada border, it is rumoured that mysterious and majestic wild stallions run free across the rugged mountain terrain. Determined to photograph these illusive creatures, eleven-year-old Hanna (Miranda Cosgrove, TV s iCarly) and her father, Frank, head to Bear Mountain Ranch, run by Frank's old flame, Matty. While Hanna explores her new surroundings-a big change from her city life-she meets a new friend in CJ, a farm girl with plenty of horse experience. But the adventure is just getting started as they discover a plan hatched by the wealthy tycoon, Novak (Robert Wagner), to rid the area of the wild horses. Now the girls must turn to Matty for help before the legend of the stallions is lost forever.
New man in Zuni Wells. Handsome. Knows horses. Looking for part-time work until rodeo season opens. But when the ranch job Lonnie Beale snaps up turns out to be a stint at a dude ranch/spa for actresses and models and when the fella playing Lonnie is Elvis Presley it's a cinch we're all in for full-time fun! This film frolic tickles with a saddlebag of nine tunes including I'm Yours and (Such An) Easy Question). There's considerable tickling of the funnybone since writers Elwood Ullman and Edward Bernds are veterans of the Three Stooges comedies. Elvis enjoys his share of the laughs as he meets girl (Jocelyn Lane) loses girl and gets girl back plus a fortune in lost gold. Tickle Me is good as gold in so many ways.

And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python's first feature, is a reworking of their best skits from the first two seasons of the TV series. Originally made for the US market (where the show had yet to be aired), it was shot on film outside the usual studio sets ("Nudge Nudge", for example, is set in a tavern filled with passers-by). The writing and performances are fine and the film is packed with some of their best bits: "How to Avoid Being Seen", " Hell's Grannies", "Blackmail", "The Lumberjack Song" and "The Upper Class Twit of the Year", among others. Many of the sketches have been shortened, however, and the loss of the overly bright video sheen (the film has a muddy, dull look to it) and the invigorating presence of a live audience leaves the film sluggish at times. They're still feeling out the possibilities of the feature length, which they conquered with their next movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974). --Sean Axmaker

Too old for Hamlet and too young for Lear--what's an ambitious actor to do? Play the Devil, of course. Jack Nicholson did it in The Witches of Eastwick; Robert De Niro did it in Angel Heart (as Louis Cyphre--get it?). In The Devil's Advocate Al Pacino takes his turn as the great Satan, and clearly relishes his chance to raise hell. He's a New York lawyer, of course, by the name of John Milton, who recruits a hotshot young Florida attorney (Keanu Reeves) to his firm and seduces him with tempting offers of power, sex and money. Think of the story as a twist on John Grisham's The Firm, with the corporate evil made even more explicit. Reeves is wooden, and therefore doesn't seem to have much of a soul to lose, but he's really just our excuse to meet the devil. Pacino's the main attraction, gleefully showing off his--and the Antichrist's--chops at perpetrating menace and mayhem. --Jim Emerson
