Triple Oscar nominated psychological war film with twists of black humour which is set during World War II. Captain Newman (Gregory Peck) is head of a neuro-psychiatric ward at a military hospital which treats combatants suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Peck delivers one of his best acting performances as an eccentric doctor who will use unconventional tactics to treat his patients and to recruit much needed personnel. We're short of beds, doctors, orderlies, nurses, everything ... except patients! Newman tells Corporal Leibowitz (Tony Curtis), as he browbeats him into becoming a new and very reluctant orderly. Similarly, Newman takes great care to seduce an army nurse (Angie Dickinson), into what she thinks is a romantic date... until he asks her to transfer to Ward 7 instead of taking off her clothes! When Newman s old-school base commander (John Gregory) saddles him with a group of injured Italian POWs because his has the only secure ward in the hospital, and a flock of stray sheep keep invading the hospital, the scene is set for one of the most poignant and funny war films which is a joy to watch.

  • Halloween II [1981]Halloween II | DVD | (04/10/2004) from £5.89   |  Saving you £0.10 (1.70%)   |  RRP £5.99

You can't kill the boogeyman", explained John Carpenter in the original Halloween, and to prove it Michael Myers returns in the handsome but grisly sequel Halloween 2. Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode but spends most of her time cowering in a hospital gown, and Donald Pleasance runs around like a maniac as the panicky doctor desperate to hunt down Myers before he kills again. Carpenter writes and produces with partner Debra Hill and together they replace the mystery and uncertainty of the original with an exponentially bigger body count, some strange tales about the Druids and Pagan ceremonies, and the now-familiar family ties between Michael and Laurie. First-time director Rick Rosenthal (Bad Boys) paces the film at a brisk jog and directs it with a clean, crisp style, taking the murders out of the dark to display them in all their nasty detail. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

  • Blue Steel [1989]Blue Steel | DVD | (18/06/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Blue Steel contains all the familiar elements of action cinema, such as gun fetishism and the glamorisation of violence, yet tells the story from a uniquely feminine viewpoint. Directed by one of Hollywood's few female action directors, Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, Strange Days), and starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Blue Steel is superficially an engaging action thriller about a rookie cop stalked by an obsessive killer, but Bigelow also offers an underlying message about our fascination today with gun culture and violence. The director subverts an essentially male-dominated genre with a film that displays all the requisite action credentials yet at the same time offers a portrait of how women deal with a violent world. --Abi Brennan

A sharp-looking computer-animated feature, Rudolph and the Island of the Misfit Toys, sees the return of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 37 years after his television debut. Using excellent voice casting with actors that sound like the originals, this new Rudolph looks and sounds grand. There's a mysterious Toy Taker gobbling up toys around the world. Rudolph and his team (including deer-friend Clarice, elf-turned-dentist Hermey and the abominable snowman) try to track the toys down and save Christmas again. While the setup and songs hold no candle to the original and the lessons learned are borrowed from Toy Story 2, the final third succeeds--it's always good to have a flying reindeer when you are chasing a blimp. Children aged three to nine who have seen the original will certainly want to see the sequel--however, their parents might be less enthusiastic. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com
