| RRP The 1994 movie Stargate was originally intended as the start of a franchise, but creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were distracted celebrating their Independence Day. Episodic TV treatment was the natural next step. In the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the teacher's pet primary unit SG-1 With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Chasing their heels at almost every turn are the "overlord" Goa'uld--the ancient Egyptian Gods who are none too chummy after the events of the original film. The welcome notion of a continued plot thread sees offshoots that follow the reincarnation of Daniel's wife, Sam's father joining a renegade faction of the Goa'uld, and Jack in an unending quest to out-sarcasm everyone. There's something of The Time Tunnel to the show's premise, but amid a dearth of derivative look-a-likes, Stargate has held its own with stories that put the science fiction back into TV sci-fi. --Paul TonksOn this DVD: Resolving the cliffhanger from Volume 10, "The Devil You Know" reveals an embarrassing secret that could allow the team to escape the clutches of Satanic Sokar. Then, when following up clues to find the Harcesis child "Forever in a Day", Teal'c is the only one to notice the SGC has been taken over by chameleonic aliens trying to establish a "Foothold" on Earth for invasion. The following "Pretense" is one of those sci-fi series staples as a character is put on trial to prove their guilt on behalf of another. "Urgo" is this volume's highlight, and expands the general sardonic humour with a little pathos for the guest appearance by Dom DeLuise. Lots of slapstick ensues. As well as trailers for the next volume, the disc includes a seven-minute interview with Don Davis on his character of General George Hammond. He talks about his own Captaincy in the army and an acting career that began with MacGuyver! There's also five minutes with costume designer Christine McQuarrie explaining what has to be done in just seven days. --Paul Tonks

from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Alferd Packer was the only man in the United States ever convicted of cannibalism--what better hero for fellow Coloradan and future South Park creator Trey Parker to celebrate in music? Blue-eyed and boyish Parker was still in college when he wrote, directed, composed the songs for and took the starring role as the innocent young Packer in this film, giving a gee-whiz performance as an ambitious pioneer who joins an ill-fated trek west that ends up stranded in the mountains. At times resembling a perverse community theatre parody of Rodgers and Hammerstein ("My heart's as full as a baked po-ta-to!"), Parker bounces back and forth between cheery production numbers and goony songs ("Let's build a snowman", sings one starving-mad hiker) and grotesque gore (bloody body parts, festering sores, human hors d'oeuvres). It lacks in style and consistency and the juvenile gags and fart jokes wear thin over the course of a feature film, but Parker's sheer energy and inventiveness carry the overlong picture to a rousing conclusion. Regular Parker collaborators Matt Stone and Dian Bachar co-star in this tuneful barbecue. --Sean Axmaker

Mind Ripper | DVD | (28/06/2004)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Shot in Bulgaria and Canada, with a "Wes Craven Presents" caption--that doubtless has something to do with the producer being Craven's son--Mind Ripper started out as The Hills Have Eyes, Part 3 but turned into yet another re-run of the plot about the genetically-engineered super-being-cum-brain-eating-monster who gets loose in an underground research station and slaughters scientists one by one in grisly fashion. After most of the original cast members are killed, craggy Lance Henriksen turns up with his family to provide a fresh set of characters to be chased, menaced, jumped on, cranially sucked and splattered. The monster, acronymed THOR (Dan Blom), is a would-be suicide volunteered for a new serum created by the sinister GenTec Corporation. He turns into a bald steroid case with yellow contact lenses and a Cronenbergian brain-leeching tentacle tongue, and meagre attempts are made at wringing pathos out of his plight (uniquely, the monster has an irrelevant dream sequence in which he is killed by the heroine). It's competent but formulaic stuff, with reliable Henriksen carrying more than his weight at the head of a cast of then-unknowns, some of whom (Giovanni Ribisi, Natasha Gregson Wagner) have gone on to improve their careers. On the DVD: there are frame captures passed off as a photo gallery and the trailer; and the picture is fullscreen. But what else can you expect?--Kim Newman
