Barenboim's Mahler Five begins with a certain sense of detachment and continues that way, seeming both calculated and calculating by turns. The composer's famous aphorism about the process of symphonic composition being in the nature of "building a world" is quoted in the excellent and detailed booklet notes (no shortage of scholarship here), so it's intriguing to observe how Barenboim chooses to contain the warmth and passion inherent in the work. In building a world, perhaps, one must perforce define its boundaries, yet at the same time it's this very process of containment that draws attention to these qualities. Musically, then, this is undoubtedly an interesting piece of work. In production terms, we're offered a very good argument for the DVD as a vehicle for orchestral performance. What may appear at first glance to be irritatingly skittish camerawork is in fact a perfect demonstration of how careful direction can draw attention to particular areas of the orchestra at exactly the right moment. The sound quality, though aggressively digital, is airy and detailed. --Roger Thomas

In this personal pilgrimage world-renowned pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim travels to Buenos Aires to rediscover his home town the magic of tango and the legend of its greatest pioneer Carlos Gardel. Interviews and fabulous archive footage evoke the glamorous and optimistic spirit of Buenos Aires in the early 20th century and provide a framework for investigating the forces which brought such material and artistic wealth to its impoverished immigrant communities. Barenboim demonstrates tango styles and techniques and brings the music of Gardel Salgn Pazzolla and Ginastera to life in performances with Rodolfo Mederos and Hector Console and in a thrilling partnership with Placido Domingo. For the fourth annual May 1 European Concert commemorating the date that the orchestra was founded, the Berlin Philharmonic chose to perform in the Staatstheater Meiningen under Claudio Abbado. The acoustic has plenty of bloom and sets the orchestra off beautifully. The concert begins with Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, which Daniel Barenboim starts with surprising leisureliness; one usually associates him with generally quick tempi, but here he gives a measured, almost stately, account of the first movement. But stateliness is not the only mood he conjures up: the slow movement is hypnotically impressionistic (and accompanied by some velvety, luscious string playing), and the finale a brilliant piece of poker-faced playfulness. Abbado then gives a passionate reading of Brahms' Second Symphony, and draws some gorgeously blended playing from the orchestra: the opening of the first movement creates the impression of soft meadows and rolling hills (it's not called Brahms' Pastoral Symphony for nothing). The visual style contains no surprises--shots of the conductor, shots of the players and so on--but is perfectly adequate for the job. On the DVD: The European Concert, 1994 includes a 20-minute German documentary about Meiningen, its place in German cultural life and the involvement of Hans von Bulow (the first Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic) in the Meiningen Orchestra's early days. There are subtitles in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. There are also short trailers for eight other TDK DVDs.--Warwick Thompson

Liszt Recital From La Scala
Since 1991 the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has played a European Concert on every May 1 (the date upon which the orchestra was founded) in different places of cultural importance. In 1997 the venue was the Royal Opera House in Versailles, a beautiful small theatre with an intimate acoustic. The dimensions of the stage clearly limit the orchestra to smaller-scale works rather than their usual romantic repertoire, but the sound under Daniel Barenboim is glorious nonetheless. The concert opens with a tribute to Francois Couperin, one of the greatest composers ever to have been associated with Versailles. Ravel's neo-classical Le Tombeau de Couperin is performed with graceful restraint and refined elegance, and suits the style of the hall perfectly. Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 13 is less successful, simply because the solo instrument is placed facing the orchestra in order to allow Barenboim both to play and conduct. The result is that the piano sound is muffled and the orchestral direction less precise. But things pick up again in the Eroica Symphony, a piece perfectly suited to the conductor's volatile temperament: the louds are very loud, the softs extremely soft and the sudden shifts between them explosively handled. The visual direction by Bob Coles concentrates on individual orchestral performers, with highly watchable results. On the DVD: The European Concert, 1997 also includes a 20-minute documentary in German about the history of music in Paris, the construction of Versailles and an interview with Daniel Barenboim. The documentary is subtitled in English, French, Spanish and Italian. --Warwick Thompson
