Based on Caroline Graham's novels and featuring the stolid crime-solving skills of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby, Midsomer Murders made their television debut in 1997 and continue to keep viewers happy with that potent whodunnit ingredient: spectacularly bloody murders in the most tranquil rural settings the Shires have to offer. Midsomer is a vaguely defined area of villages and hamlets with charming names like Badger's Drift and Goodman's Land. It also has the highest number of violent deaths per capita outside the average war zone. Serial killings abound to test the nerve of Barnaby (John Nettles) and his sidekick Sergeant Troy (Daniel Casey), a dullard easily perplexed by a world which refuses to stick to his black and white view of things. Nettles is excellent; there's a hint of Bergerac still, now heavier of jowl and broader of beam, though the chasing is necessarily limited and the DCI enjoys the home comforts of an understanding wife and a spirited daughter. "Every time I go into any Midsomer village, it's always the same thing", he huffs. "Blackmail, sexual deviancy, suicide and murder." Ain't it the truth? The murders are astonishing. Family feuds, jealousy, incest, industrial espionage, all erupt at regular intervals leaving a trail of bodies with throats slashed, limbs dismembered and blood absolutely everywhere. Rivers of sheer nastiness run deep beneath the superficially pastoral perfection of Midsomer. Thank goodness there are still men like dependable Barnaby to get to the bottom of things. Eventually. Sure of Barnaby’s eventual success, Midsomer Murders make for a cosy, even comforting, couple of hours curled up in front of the television. And they make a great showcase for star turns from the great stable of British character actors, too, from Celia Imrie and Elizabeth Spriggs to Imelda Staunton and Duncan Preston, who invariably turn this whimsical stuff into the tastiest possible ham.--Piers Ford

Klaus' brother Elijah follows to New Orleans and soon learns that Hayley a former flame of Klaus' who is in the city investigating her family history has fallen into the hands of a powerful witch named Sophie. While they wait for their sister Rebekah to join them in New Orleans Klaus and Elijah form an uneasy alliance with Sophie and her community of witches. Sophie has been turned into a revolutionary by the loss her own sister at Marcel's hands and by the mysterious disappearance of a young witch named Davina and she is willing to do anything - including making a deal with Original family - to break Marcel's power over the witches of the French Quarter. Even the human population of the Quarter is unwittingly drawn into this supernatural battleground including Cami a whip-smart psychology grad student with secrets of her own. Now in the midst of a thriving New Orleans a city known to be steeped in magic and history the long-smoldering war is about to reach a fever pitch and the Originals stand as the catalyst. From legendary creator/writer Steven Bochco the multi award-winning Hill Street Blues is the original pioneering ‘ TV cop show’ that blazed the trail for later ensemble hits such as NYPD Blue and L.A. Law. One of the most innovative and critically acclaimed series of its time this is the story of an overworked under-staffed police precinct in an anonymous inner city patterned after Chicago. ‘Let’s be careful out there.’ So ends each roll-call session at the Hill Street station house. As the cops and detectives head out onto the streets Captain Frank Furillo juggles the delicate balancing act of providing enough protection for the law-abiding citizens without inciting the neighbourhood gangs and local criminal elements who are openly hostile towards any police presence. Yet as dangerous as his inner city precinct can be Furillo's biggest battles often involve protecting his own cops from the Public Defender's office self-serving bureaucrats and even each other. Breathtakingly fast paced mature tough brutal and uncompromising Hill Street Blues is a triumph of intelligence and substance. It is quite simply the most ground-breaking show in recent memory and is essential viewing for all lovers of quality entertainment.

Steven Seagal plays a Chicago cop who takes on CIA types in this action thriller from Andrew Davis (The Fugitive). Davis brings muscle to the project, including some strong set pieces that make Seagal (who also co-wrote and co-produced the film) look good. Co-stars Pam Grier and Sharon Stone also assist in this endeavour, yet nothing can really mitigate such ridiculous moments as Seagal's getting profound with a villain in his raspy monotone: "You think you're above the law. But you're not.". --Tom Keogh, Amazon.co.uk

Director Jim Sheridan links up once more with Daniel Day-Lewis for 1997's The Boxer, a study of a violent Belfast's uneasy crossover into the peace process (they had previously worked on My Left Foot among other films). Day-Lewis stars as Danny Flynn, imprisoned in his late teens for terrorism, now out after 14 years. A once promising boxer, he's initially looking to resume what's left of his career. However, his rekindled love for Maggie (Emily Watson), daughter of local IRA boss (Brian Cox), is coupled with a need to be a part of the healing process in Northern Ireland. With the help of his former trainer (Ken Stott), he reopens a non-sectarian gym. However, the non-pacific wing of the IRA, personified by Gerard McSorley, resents Flynn, not least for consorting with Maggie, who is another IRA prisoner's wife. Day-Lewis plays Flynn as an almost spiritual figure, still caught in the introspection that enshrouded him during his years in jail. Ironically, the well-executed boxing scenes provide a respite from the air of serious violence that pervades the rest of the film, symbolised by the ominous rotorblades of the ever-present helicopters, from which much of the action of this sad, yet gripping and ultimately uplifting movie, is shot.On the DVD: Generous extras include commentaries from producer Arthur Lappin, who offers a tourist's guide to various locations, as well as one from director Jim Sheridan, who offers technical info and remarks drily of a brief, tart exchange between Maggie and Flynn, "This is an Irish love scene". There's also an alternative (though not that alternative) ending, extra scenes which probably deserved to stay on the cutting room floor and, most illuminatingly, a featurette on the movie. This reveals that the career of Barry McGuigan (boxing advisor here) provided Sheridan with the impetus to make The Boxer, inspired by the courage and grace he showed in the ring to rise above partisanship. --David Stubbs
