The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift has all the elements that spelled success for its predecessors: Speed, sex, and minimal dialogue. The plot doesn't need explication; it's a nonsensical series of confrontations and standoffs that serve to get us from one race to another. Tokyo Drift can most accurately be described as a visual poem about screeching tires, crunching fiberglass, and sleek female skin, set to a killer soundtrack of Japanese pop and hip-hop. The actors are only needed for tight close-ups of narrowed eyes or sweaty hands tightly gripping gearshifts, though Sung Kang, Better Luck Tomorrow, stands out as a vaguely philosophical hoodlum with deadpan charisma. The curved bodies of the cars and the luscious flesh of the women are both shot with a fetishistic hunger. The "drift" style of racing--in which the cars are allowed to slide in order to take sharp turns at high speeds--grabs your eyes; there's a strange, spectral beauty to rows of cars sliding sideways down a mountain road at night. Also starring Lucas Black (Friday Night Lights) as our wheel-happy hero; Bow Wow (Roll Bounce) as the scam-artist comic relief; and martial arts legend Sonny Chiba (Kill Bill) as a yakuza big shot. --Bret Fetzer

The Trout is an exuberant explosion of youthful enjoyment in music: first from Schubert himself who wrote his famous Trout quintet when he was 22 years old and then from five young artists of the highest rank. They pick up the spirit of Schubert's music magnificently both in preparation and rehearsal and in their 1969 performance of the work which has become one of the most remembered ever given. The Greatest Love and the Greatest Sorrow is a film which sets out to bring the viewer closer not to the details of Schubert's life but to the spirit of what he was trying to express with what he called his creative gift and with which he tried to brighten the world. The film begins with the funeral of Beethoven at which Schubert was a torch-bearer and the story is told almost entirely in music that Schubert wrote in the twenty months that remained to him after that date together with quotations from his letters and diaries and the words that he chose to set in some of his songs.
John Dahl, the director behind Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, is the director and co-writer of Kill Me Again, and it shows. Dahl's love of modern noir, ruthless women, Western landscapes, and double-crosses shines through. Joanne Whalley-Kilmer plays Fay, a spitfire who has somehow gotten herself mixed up with a psychotic thug (Michael Madsen, of course) named Vince. Fay runs off with a whole lot of Vince's stolen money and hires loser private eye Jack Andrews (Val Kilmer) to help her fake her own death. To say any more would spoil a terrific, intricate plot that keeps heating up as interested parties close in on Jack, Fay, and the money. The then-married Kilmer and Whalley-Kilmer clearly have a great time playing off each other, and Madsen adds another brilliantly played lunatic to his oeuvre. Enjoy it, and don't trust anybody. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

By the second half of the second series of Lost, the debates are really hotting up. Is it the most cleverly plotted, densely packed television programme of recent times, cunningly working on many levels and lacing lots of hidden clues as it moves along? Or is it pretentious, slow-moving tosh, that's desperately trying to stretch out a simple concept to fill as many seasons as possible?
