It’s the most shocking term yet in the history of Waterloo Road a term that will change some lives – and end others – as staff and students grapple with the challenges that life puts before them. For Head Teacher Michael it will see him up against Lorraine Donnegan the money behind the school as she attempts to implement 30% cuts a hammer blow to his vision of education for all. Trouble rears its most ugly head in the form of Steve-O Dynasty Barry’s ex-boyfriend fresh out of prison and ready to get his hooks into anyone he can including Dynasty. But she has eyes for Kevin leading to the sexiest chess game ever and a whole lot of trouble for Kevin including Dynasty’s hot-headed mother and a TV-show that fi nds him face to face with an unwelcome past. Grantly Budgen has fallen into a coma and his wife Maggie is putting all her hope in Tom Clarkson; soft-spoken Audrey fi nds herself engaged to a Malawian immigrant; one new teacher has a hidden agenda; another brings a sharp tongue to teaching mandarin. As the term draws to a close so will many of the problems facing the school its teachers and pupils. But the completely unexpected is always just around the corner at Waterloo Road.
It's a year of change at Waterloo Road as the school finds itself with a new Head Teacher and on the cusp of even greater change. Meanwhile the first term finds Head Teacher Karen Fisher still trying to stay in control, while finding herself enamoured of the new Site Manager Rob Scotcher. An abandoned baby, new teaching staff, gender issues, bullying, cancer, backstabbing and more brings in a Director of Education with an ulterior motive as he gathers information to threaten the school with closure. But the spring term brings a new Head Teacher, Michael Byrne, and new staff including married couple Jeremy 'Jezz' Diamond, and his wife Sian, as well as an old companion of Michael's, the conceivably unbalanced Linda Radleigh. New students include Phoenix and Harly Taylor, as well as twins Shona and Rhona Mansfield, Tariq and his sister Trudi, while stepping up as best mates are the unlikely pairing of Emily James and Jodi 'Scout' Allen. As the tension builds, Michael is taken out by a hit and run driver, and the summer term finds him recuperating while the school faces a new challenge in the form of gang culture. On the home front, Grantly loses his wife to Alzheimer's; Janeece meets the man of her dreams in an all-too whirlwind romance; and even young Scout finds herself caught up in a love affair that may be less than it seems. Prom night is coming, Kyle is on the loose with a crossbow, the school may be about to close, what will the future hold? There are new kids in town when the Barry family arrives at Waterloo Road led by their hard as nails matriarch Carol. There's Dynasty dressed to kill and capable of it; Kacey a girl with the kick of a pro-footballer and Barry Barry (so bad they named him twice) a smiling charmer who's greatest ability is to spell trouble for Waterloo Road. It promises to be a hard year all round as Head Teacher Michael may face trial for the assisted death of his father; Chalky is set to become a foster parent to the doubting Kevin; Christine struggles to remain sober while keeping Imogen and Connor apart; and Sian is trying to keep it all together while about to face a challenge all of her own. For the most struggling kids there's help in sight with a new Pupil Referral Unit for vulnerable underachievers like Phoenix Rhiannon and Jodie. Nikki Boston is running the unit with a chip on her shoulder and a reason to crush Jodie's spirit - but it could be the wrong girl to pick on for the wrong reason. Throw in a couple of young lottery winners a much-loved teacher with a new found weakness and wedding bells at the last minute for an on-again/off-again couple and it all adds up to one of the most exciting terms yet for the new-look Waterloo Road. It's a whole new world for Waterloo Road as many of the teachers and some of the pupils move to a new academy school in Greenock, Scotland, sponsored by successful businesswoman Lorraine Donnegan. Grantly and Maggie, soon to be married, are house parents to the kids who have come up from the old school, while Head Teacher Michael Byrne, Sian, Tom, Janeece and Chalky immerse themselves in the new school, pupils both new and old and all the challenges they bring with them. New teachers include the straitlaced Audrey McFall, and Christine Mulgrew, a semifunctioning alcoholic who wreaks havoc in the lives of all around her. New pupils include Christine's son and primary buffer Conor, who is constantly saved from veering off-track by new girl Imogen. However, even she is fated to fall victim to the dysfunctional Mulgrew mother/son relationship.
