Season 5: Divorce number two is immediately on the cards as the year opens with "T.O. After Ross Says Rachel". As of this point, Ross' character undergoes some extreme personality changes (which apparently lost Schwimmer many female fans). His incessant whining drives all the Friends to distraction, especially in "T.O.W. Ross Moves In" with Chandler and Joey. Later things get uncomfortable both at work and at home when he goes through a period of rage ("T.O.W. Ross' Sandwich"). While all this downplays his failed relationship with Rachel, the real idea is to allow focus on the secret pairing of Chandler and Monica after a night of passion in London. This made for a return to the show's appealingly silly atmosphere as poor Joey is made piggy-in-the-middle of everyone's secrets. Building to "T.O.W. Everybody Finds Out", the silliness pauses for some genuinely touching interplay between Perry and Cox. The previous year's semi-serious thread about Phoebe's birth gets forgotten fast: to distract the viewer she's introduced to Gary (Michael Rapaport) in "T.O.W. The Cop". This leads to some hilarious parodying with Phoebe interrogated about apartment hunting, and the guys excited and then scared in "T.O. W. The Ride Along". She's more than over him by the time of the two-part finale "T.O.W. In Vegas" though, especially since she missed out on London. Just in case fans thought Chandler and Monica had permanently stolen the spotlight, a cliffhanger shocks expectation again with Ross and Rachel bursting out of a chapel... --Paul Tonks
An intelligent android (Michael) constructed by a research team is taken outdoors and successfully passed off as human in a trial run. When the government hears of this they order their own set of tests in Washington. When Dr. Carl Forrester realises the military want his android for a soldier he can't accept it and he and Michael go into hiding to avoid the government.
Nine years is a long time for any group of Friends to stick so closely together, but somehow the gang are still as daftly charming as ever. After the birth of Emma, Rachel comes to terms with being a mother surprisingly well. It's how everyone else deals with it that makes things interesting. Joey's accidental proposal creates weird friction between him and Ross, who breaks his finger throwing the show's first ever punch. Monica becomes desperately broody and attempts all manner of convoluted ways of persuading Chandler (unfortunately he inadvertently bankrupts them in a move to Tulsa). Phoebe, on the other hand, occupies herself in the dating game, holding on to Mike (Paul Rudd) in the longest guest star relationship anyone's ever had. Other surprise guests this year include Freddie Prinze Jr as an overly sensitive nanny (in the 200th episode), Christina Applegate as another of Rachel's sisters and Jeff Goldblum playing himself on the set of another movie on which Joey is trying to get a break. As always the sparks occasionally fly between Rachel and Ross, while the others manage to strain their own relationships to the max. The real reason for watching now is the one-off kooky scenarios in which they--or rather Joey--get into. His endless dating finally sees him stuck for remembering if he's already slept with a girl; he botches an attempt at eyebrow waxing; and he manages to make Chandler think that Monica wants a breast enhancement. A 10th series and potential movie spin-off were announced well before the year was over, meaning six very rich actors will be supplying the fun for some time yet to come. --Paul Tonks
All actors have to try a mental-impairment role at some point in their careers (don't they?), and Mel Gibson took his best shot with this sweet film about a young retarded man and his gentle relationship with an older woman (Piper Laurie) who teaches him to read and to adjust to the real world. Tim's parents come to trust the woman's honourable intentions, but the movie still gives Mel's female fans a lot to swoon over; it's a platonic romance with plenty of temptation that is never acted upon. Add to that the fact that Gibson is really quite good in the title role--after Mad Max, this was Mel's first widely seen opportunity to prove himself in a dramatic role before his higher-profile roles in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Gallipoli. Tim is a bit too schmaltzy and sentimental, but this 1979 release has gained a loyal audience over the years, and the film has a lot more than just a young Mel Gibson to recommend it. --Jeff Shannon

However they bicker over how to spend the fortune if they win and Monica irritates everyone else by buying tickets just for her and Chandler. The One With Rachel's Dream: Nervous because his daytime drama role requires him to act as if he is deeply in love with a woman Joey rehearses with Rachel. Later she observes the taping of the emotional scene and has a surprising dream that night about Joey. The One With The Soap Opera Party: Ross is excited when he meets fellow paleontology professor Charlie Wheeler (Aisha Tyler) a stunning beauty. But when he takes her to Joey's rooftop party to meet the stars of Joey's daytime drama 'Days of Our Lives' she intimidates him with her impressive list of former boyfriends.

August Richards) life changed forever when his sister was turned into vampire. Sporting a pickup truck decorated with stakes Gunn took a while to warm up to Angel but is now a firm part of the team. Much was made in the press about Aniston marrying Brad Pitt, of course, but the real news (allaying fans' fears) was NBC's expensive renewal of the cast for two years at $750,000 per episode each (more than six times their previous increase). On-screen, at least there was Chandler and Monica's engagement lasting the whole year, despite predictable ups and downs (eg: "T.O.W. the Truth About London" revealing that Monica fancied Joey). By the time we finally get to "T.O.W. Chandler's Dad" (Kathleen Turner), it seems inevitable that the two-part finale will be an insane mess--but with a happy-ish ending. Sure enough, "T.O.W. Chandler and Monica's Wedding" features Gary Oldman joining in the chaos as Chandler repeatedly goes missing. Other star turns in the year were Seinfeld's Jason Alexander as a suicidal Office Manager, Susan Sarandon as soap queen bitch Jessica Lockhart, Denise Richards as one of Ross and Monica's endless number of cousins and Winona Ryder as a surprise old friend, prompting "T.O.W. Rachel's Big Kiss". But perhaps the most telling instalment of this weirdly atmospheric year was "T.O.W. They All Turn Thirty". Space Precinct is one of the oddest science-fiction shows ever. Launched at the same time as Babylon 5, and looking like a cross between that series and Blade Runner (1982), it is like B5 about a group of interplanetary peacekeepers on a space station around an alien planet. Except that, rather than any extrapolated SF future, an entire New York police unit has been transferred into space, lock, stock and two smoking raygun barrels. Produced by Gerry Anderson, the result seems too adult for children, too juvenile for adults. "Double Duty", the first episode, for example, involves our cop heroes hunting the alien monster that is slaughtering Demiter City's drug dealers, and the copious blood and one particular sexual reference suggest an adult show at odds with the nice children, cute aliens, comic relief robot and simplistic scenario. On the plus side, the special effects are especially lavish by TV standards, and the "Making of" documentary offers an interesting if brief introduction to modern SFX. Human actors wearing complex animatronic alien heads suggest aspects of Anderson's puppet shows (Stingray, Thunderbirds) meeting his live action series (UFO, Space 1999). Technically accomplished, Space Precinct is a genuine curiosity in search of a cult-audience. --Gary S. Dalkin

The latest entry in the Harry Potter saga could be retitled Fast Times at Hogwarts, where finding a date to the winter ball is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are only going to get darker). Mike Newell handily takes the directing reins and eases his young cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, more sure of himself) has his first girl crush on fellow student Cho Chang, and has his first big fight with best bud Ron. Meanwhile, Ron's underlying romantic tension with Hermione comes to a head over the winter ball, and when she makes one of those girl-into-woman Cinderella entrances, the boys' reactions indicate they've all crossed a threshold. But don't worry, there's plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. When the deadly Tri-Wizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most thrilling yet. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan Gleeson as Mad Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore, still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation.--Ellen A. In AMERICAN NINJA 3: BLOOD HUNT (1989) the bicep-ridden Steve James (THE EXTERMINATOR) is given the task of babysitting a new tough guy in town – former fighting champion David Bradley who has big shoes to step into! Yet with more martial arts mayhem than one could possibly shake a samurai sword at AMERICAN NINJA 3 sustains the brutal comic book excess that this classic collection became famous for.
Series 8 of Friends keeps throwing in distractions, but nothing can really get in the way of our interest in Rachel's baby and Joey's newfound infatuation. In "The One Where Chandler Takes a Bath" the notorious stress-head finds a new way of relaxing; but really the focus is on Ross and Rachel arguing over baby names and guessing its sex. The subplot revolves again around Chandler in "The One with the Secret Closet", where he finally thinks to investigate what's next to the bathroom, but again the focus is elsewhere: this time on Joey attending to Rachel's stomach pains and trying to get her out of his head for good. Valentine's Day makes "The One with the Birthing Video" a team effort for Chandler with Monica, but the point of the episode is Joey telling Ross how he feels regardless of the consequences, or how the world's happiest dog makes him feel. All of which means the focus is squarely on "The One Where Joey Tells Rachel", since no one else believes him! --Paul Tonks

Suddenly the killer is loose in the Space Precinct House and Orrin is its first Victim...Protect And Survive Brogan's informant Slik Ostrasky is murdered by Tylan Gershom a smuggler of illegal Xyronite immigrants and the only witness is slimy Melazoid business executive Armand Loyster. Brogan and Haldane are assigned to offer Loyster protection until he can testify as Gershom's trial. But Gershom plans to ensure that Loyster never reaches the courtroom...Enforcer On Skall Street in Demeter City members of the infamous Hydra Gang are found dead - their hearts shredded but not a single mark in their bodies! Accompanied by an orphaned alien girl a new enforcer has taken over and the Skall Street traders soon discover that the Hydras have been replaced by something far worse. Flash: A new drug HE-11 (also known as 'Flash') has arrived on the street of Demeter causing spontaneous combustion in its users. While Brogan and Haldane visit Interchem the pharmaceutical company which originally developed the drug Orrin and Beezle run into trouble when Interchem's chief chemist Pola Vad Moonacki is kidnapped.
It's easy to forget that, though fronting the British war effort through most of World War Two, Winston Churchill had spent the previous decade isolated in Parliament and in an internal opposition to the Conservative party. Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years dramatises this period, in which the growing menace of Nazism in Germany was met with indifference, even fear by governments of the day who were more concerned with their survival than in serving those who had elected them. Churchill is perceptively played by Robert Hardy who confirms the image without falling into caricature. Visionary and obstinate by turns, he galvanises his supporters and enrages his enemies with a passion borne of conviction. A seasoned British cast includes Peter Barkworth as the amiable but ineffectual Stanley Baldwin, Eric Porter as the truly "out of time" Neville Chamberlain, Edward Woodward as the scheming Samuel Hoare, and Nigel Havers as the tragically flawed Randolph Churchill. Martin Gilbert has done a persuasive job transforming his novel into a TV script, the scenes in the House of Commons having a gritty reality that makes compulsive viewing. On the DVD: It's a pity that the Southern Pictures production first screened in 1981 has emerged so dimly in this incarnation. Has the master tape eroded so badly, or was it simply not available? However, it's worth putting up with the technical defects to enjoy this historically informed and grippingly dramatic serial. --Richard Whitehouse

Utopia: Stan and Ollie inherit a yacht along with a small island. They set sail accompanied by a stateless refugee and a stowaway. A violent storm causes our heroes to crash on their island. Together
