Nine years is a long time for any group of Friends to stick so closely together, but somehow the gang are still as daftly charming as ever. After the birth of Emma, Rachel comes to terms with being a mother surprisingly well. It's how everyone else deals with it that makes things interesting. Joey's accidental proposal creates weird friction between him and Ross, who breaks his finger throwing the show's first ever punch. Monica becomes desperately broody and attempts all manner of convoluted ways of persuading Chandler (unfortunately he inadvertently bankrupts them in a move to Tulsa). Phoebe, on the other hand, occupies herself in the dating game, holding on to Mike (Paul Rudd) in the longest guest star relationship anyone's ever had. Other surprise guests this year include Freddie Prinze Jr as an overly sensitive nanny (in the 200th episode), Christina Applegate as another of Rachel's sisters and Jeff Goldblum playing himself on the set of another movie on which Joey is trying to get a break. As always the sparks occasionally fly between Rachel and Ross, while the others manage to strain their own relationships to the max. The real reason for watching now is the one-off kooky scenarios in which they--or rather Joey--get into. His endless dating finally sees him stuck for remembering if he's already slept with a girl; he botches an attempt at eyebrow waxing; and he manages to make Chandler think that Monica wants a breast enhancement. A 10th series and potential movie spin-off were announced well before the year was over, meaning six very rich actors will be supplying the fun for some time yet to come. --Paul Tonks

  • The Water Babies [1978]The Water Babies | DVD | (01/09/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

The Water Babies tells the story of Tom, a chimney sweep who gets framed for theft in 1850s England. Even though a young girl named Ellie knows the real thieves' identities and tries to clear Tom's name, Tom's desperate escape run lands him right in the middle of Dead Man's Pool. Assumed to have met certain death, Tom gets sucked into a magical underwater world. Tom befriends the creatures he meets beneath the sea, and they accompany him on a journey to the land of Water Babies, where he intends to ask the all-powerful Cracken to help him return to the world above the water. However, when Tom finally does manage to return to land, life is far from idyllic as he must set out clear his name and trap the real thieves. Many adults possess fond memories of seeing this 1978 movie as children. The land portions of this musical feature live-action footage, while the water sequence is fully animated. To a fresh, modern audience, the abrupt change from one format to the other is somewhat disconcerting, as is the choppy, older animation style. The story, based on the classic children's book of the same name by Charles Kingsley, is an intriguing look at both Victorian culture and the fantasy world. (Ages 4-8) --Tami Horiuchi, Amazon.com

  • Blood Crime [2002]Blood Crime | DVD | (16/06/2003) from £5.99   |  Saving you £14.00 (233.72%)   |  RRP £19.99

Originally made for television, Blood Crime is a standard thriller with a better-than-usual plot. Seattle detective Daniel Pruitt (Jonathan Schaech) goes out to the country with his wife Jessica (Elizabeth Lackey, Mulholland Drive), who is brutally attacked; hysterical, she accuses an innocent man, whom Pruitt beats severely. But when he finally contacts the local sheriff (James Caan) the beaten man turns up dead and turns out to be the sheriff's son. Now Pruitt has to find the real murderer before the evidence starts pointing to him. The script isn't subtle, and as a larger mystery unfolds, some elements of Blood Crime are a little too convenient--but the tension between Pruitt and the sheriff remains surprisingly taut, the story zips along, and--for the genre--the character motivations are unusually plausible. --Bret Fetzer

  • Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot [1989]Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot | DVD | (12/05/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £199.99

Two words suffice to sum up the enduring and endearing qualities of Agatha Christie's Poirot: David Suchet. Despite all the careful Art Deco trappings, the light, spacious sets and luxurious country locations, despite the excellent supporting cast and atmospheric music score, despite all its admirable qualities this series would be for nothing without Suchet's magnificent grasp on the fussy little Belgian detective. Poirot's obsessive mannerisms, his mania for sartorial detail, his maniacal devotion to personal hygiene (especially when it comes to looking after the moustache) are all rendered exactly by Suchet, clearly as much a perfectionist in this respect as his alter ego in every other. Buoyed by their success with Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes, Granada TV brought a lighter touch to Poirot, which first aired in 1989, and this series is often breezily humorous in contrast to the gloomy Victorian Gothic of its predecessor. The producers took similar care in maintaining the spirit of Christie's original books even when--as with the Holmes adventures--the screenwriters occasionally took pardonable liberties with story and characters. Suchet is ably supported by Hugh Fraser as the Bertie Woosterish Captain Hastings, Philip Jackson as the tenaciously bulldog-like Inspector Japp, and Pauline Moran as Poirot's often exasperated PA, Miss Lemon. --Mark Walker

Jody is the kind of guy that every 1970s teen looked up to. He's in his early 20s, has a cool car, splendid '70s hair, leather jacket, plays guitar and (naturally) snags all the girls. His little brother, Mike, in particular, admires him and emulates him at every turn. Things start to go astray, however, when the two brothers and their friend Reggie attend a funeral for a friend. Mike notices a tall man working at the funeral home; in the course of his snooping, he sees the tall man put a loaded coffin into the back of a hearse as easily as if it was a shoebox. Jody doesn't believe his little brother's stories, though, until he brings home the tall man's severed finger, still wriggling in what appears to be French's mustard. From there, the film picks up a terrific momentum that doesn't let up until the sequel-ripe twist ending.Phantasm was one of the first horror movies to break the unspoken rule that victims were supposed to scream, fall down and cower until they were killed. Instead, Mike and Jody are resourceful and smart, aggressively pursuing the evil inside the funeral home with a shotgun and Colt pistol. Furthermore, the script has a great deal of character development, especially in the relationship between the two brothers. The film even has a surprisingly glossy look, despite its low-budget origins, and little outright gore (except for the infamous steel spheres that drill into victims' heads). This drive-in favourite was a big success at the time of its release, and spawned three sequels. Little wonder; it includes an inventive story, likeable characters, a runaway pace, and, of course, evil dwarves cloaked in Army blankets. The end result is one of the better horror films of the late 1970s. Hot-rod fans take note: Jody drives a Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, the pinnacle of 1960s muscle cars, rounding out his status as a Cool Guy. --Jerry Renshaw, Amazon.com

Down Time is a strange attempt to mix concrete Northern social realism and Bruce-Willis-style cliffhanger thrills, with balls of fire billowing up empty lift shafts and so forth. Paul McGann plays an ex-police psychologist, retired through ill health, drafted in to dissuade miserable single mother Chrissy (Susan Lynch) from throwing herself and her child off the top of a tower block. He succeeds, though in so doing betrays some of the problems that caused him to quit his job. He then pursues Chrissy romantically, during the course of which he, she and her little boy become stuck in the tower block lift, which then starts ascending and descending at random when hoodlum squatters break into the control box and mess about with it for an idle laugh. With its bizarre and somewhat improbable scenario, its odd mix of whimsical light romance, grim-up-North-style melodrama and explosive stunt action, Down Time as a whole doesn't really come off. The behaviour of key characters borders on the arbitrary, the "yobs" who cause all the problems go curiously unpunished and the ending barely makes sense. However, the lengthy mid-sequence in which McGann rescues (and is rescued by) Chrissy from the perilously dangling lift is, though predictable in its outcome, gripping enough. --David Stubbs
