  In the summer of 1974 The Greater Washington Educational Telecommunications Association began videotaping a number of live operatic and concert performances at the Filene Center in Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna Virginia for telecast in an innovative new series entitled 'In Performance at Wolf Trap'. The series met with overwhelming success and set the stage for the many live performance telecasts which have since followed.In 1975 'In Performance at Wold Trap' presented Beverly Sills in perhaps her most acclaimed portrayal that of Queen Elizabeth I in the Donizetti rarity Roberto Devereux. When Miss Sills first sang the role at the New York City Opera in 1970 Winthrop Sargeant wrote in the New Yorker She was Elizabeth from the extreme pallor of her makeup to the royal sweep of her train. It was a characterisation that I shall never forget. The combination of skills she brought to her role made this a historic moment. Daniel Webster wrote in the Philadelphia Inquirer Miss Sills sang the towering role with such authority and portrayed Queen Elizabeth with such fervour that the opera unstaged (in New York) for more than 125 years now is one of the theatrical events of the year.

Wells directed by Simon Wells (the great-grandson of the author) stars Guy Pearce as Alex Hartdegen an absent-minded New York professor preoccupied with what passes for technology at the turn of the 20th century. However the one thing that can distract him from his calculations is his love for Emma (Sienna Guillory) his bride-to-be. When tragedy strikes and he loses Emma Alex uses the time-travelling machine that he's built in secret to change the present by going into the past. When that fails to alter fate he leaps forward in time eventually landing 800 000 years in the future an era where humanity has splintered into two races; the docile Eloi and the ferocious Morlocks. There Alex befriends two of the Eloi (Samantha and Omero Mumba) and attempts to help them resist almost certain death at the hands of the Morlocks... Eight Legged Freaks: What do you get when you cross toxic waste with a bunch of exotic spiders? Eaten!!! Mutated ravenous arachnids the size of SUVs invade a tiny Arizona town in this gleeful comedy monster-mash.

Fitch is the team leader of the crumbling inner-city school's first "academic decathlon" squad, a group of hard-working kids hopelessly outclassed by the perennial champions from a lavishly funded model school for the gifted and the rich. When a Steinmetz student discovers the question sheet for the upcoming finals, the issue isn't whether to cheat, but how. Stockwell discards easy moralising and empty platitudes for an ambiguous perspective framed by questions of privilege and prejudice. Jeff Daniels, so long the cinema's hapless nice guy, is excellent as the tireless teacher, a well-meaning idealist who struggles with his inner demons through the ordeal. Malone is refreshing as a streetwise class brain whose ambition drives the team on. Their guilt is the focus of a predatory media scandal, but it's the hypocrisy of the system and the double standards of the gatekeepers that Stockwell takes to task in his compelling drama. Some might call it cynical, but Cheaters is too sharp and smart for such an easy label. Better to call it disillusioned.--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
