  The feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe is a satisfying if unspectacular installment in the X-Files series, taking place an unspecified time after the show's nine-year television run. Former agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is now a doctor, while Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is being hunted by his former agency and living in seclusion. He and Scully are summoned back by a case involving a missing agent and a former priest (Billy Connolly) who claims to be able to see clues to the agent's whereabouts psychically, though his initial search turns up only a severed limb. Don't expect the usual cast of characters; the FBI has completely turned over (except for the George W. Bush portrait), and the only reason Scully and Mulder are back is because agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) remembers his success on similar cases involving the inexplicable. Don't expect the same rogues' gallery either; unlike the previous X-Files feature film, which was inextricably linked to the series' convoluted mythology arc (and served as a bridge between the fifth and sixth seasons), I Want to Believe is a stand-alone piece that makes use of the series' roots in horror/sci-fi and moody Vancouver, B.C., locales. Also unlike the previous film, which was almost self-consciously shot for the big screen, this film is on a smaller scale, like a double-length episode of the series. But it's still a good reminder of the creepy vibe that hooked fans for years. And the relationship between Mulder and Scully? It seems to have resumed pretty much where it left off, at least when you take into account the long period of separation. When another murder occurs there Taggart gets involved though officially he is not on the case. Death Benefits: Julia Fraser wife of a police sergeant is brutally murdered whilst he is on duty. During a search of their house a list of names is found. It appears that the people on the list are rapidly meeting with a series of accidents - and yet there is no connection between them except that they are on the list. Taggart is facing a race against time to find the connection. Gingerbread: The murder of his father sets Simon Barrow on a journey which moves from fairy-tale to nightmare.   The continuing popularity of horror spoofs has created an opportunity for low-quality slashers such as A Crack In the Floor to pass themselves off as humorous. The story follows axe-wielding psychotic hermit Jeremiah who meets a bunch of fresh-faced young hikers and the movie employs every trick in the genre's book but still fails to rise itself above cheap exploitation (best indicated by the tasteless rape of Jeremiah's mother that prefaces the action). Brazenly claiming to feature Tracy Scoggins and Gary Busey--who in reality appear for about five minutes each--the film features young unknowns, the most high profile being Saved By the Bell's Mario Lopez. Which is fitting really because the film, with its mix of teen enthusiasm, redneck stereotypes and crass violence, is little more than that show meets The Dukes of Hazzard meets Deliverance meets Friday the 13th. Recommended for connoisseurs of everything gory and tacky but no-one else. On the DVD: The DVD manages to keep the quality set so spectacularly by the film itself--featuring an appalling trailer, a reprint of the information on the disc's box, biographies of the handful of established actors who make the briefest of cameos and trailers for some equally naff TV movies. Disc One of this double DVD set offers David Leaf's glorious documentary "Beautiful Dreamer", interviewing all those involved with the project's development (save, bizarrely, any of the surviving Beach Boys, least of all Smile's most trenchant naysayer Mike Love) and charting Brian Wilson's ascendancy to the cusp of creative immortality and subsequent crash-and-burn to a bedridden, burnt-out recluse. In the South Pole-style "production race" with The Beatles for popular music's brave new frontier (a contest more self-justificatingly important to Wilson than to Lennon/McCartney) it was to be The Beatles who planted the flag and Wilson who perished in the snow; Smile was to be Brian Wilson's nemesis. The albums' eventual completion and re-recording (hats off to Brian Wilson's musical sidekicks The Wondermints) in 2003 was the happiest and unlikeliest conclusion to pop music's most fascinating and infuriating chapter. The entire live performance of Smile in Los Angeles - beautifully filmed on Disc 2 - is a fitting happy ending. The work - especially the waxing and waning chorales of the "Child Is Father Of The Man" section - is a marvel; beautiful, bold, coherent and deft enough to leave the myth - the great "what if?" of 20th Century music history - intact. --Kevin Maidment

  High Lonesome (1995) is a made-for-TV movie, otherwise known as A Father for Charlie. It's set in the American South in the Depression and tells of the friendship between Walter, a black sharecropper (Louis Gossett Jr) and Charlie, a small white boy. Though the film's motives are honourable in its attempt at dealing with white racism, the story is implausible in its assumptions (would a black man have been allowed to foster a white boy at that time?) and deeply sentimental, not least in the last-minute conversion of the virulently racist local sheriff. Always a strong, charismatic singer, McLachlan now conjures a rare balance of delicacy and power, measured here in performances of signature songs that add a new, more muscular edge matching her band's rock firepower. Thus, "Possession" expands beyond its already sensual promise to touch on truly erotic abandon, while "Building a Mystery" focuses its portrait of a narcissistic poseur with a harder edge and a newly amended, adult lyric that's entirely appropriate. Shot on McLachlan's 1998 headlining tour, the concert captures her in a more theatrical and frankly glamorous (if slightly funky) vein than her fabled Lilith Fair shows: in her floor-length blue gown, sparkling blue mascara, and bare feet, she evokes a more demure, Gen-X cousin to Cabaret's Sally Bowles. On the DVD: With 23 featured songs, Mirrorball on video adds nine tracks not heard on the CD. The audio mixing is generally excellent, providing some hall ambience but retaining a front-array, proscenium placement to instruments.
