How could a U.S. President recognised as one of the most accomplished international statesmen in world history allow the presidency to be bought to it's knees by such a seemingly insignificant incident. In 1974 President Richard Nixon pressured by public scrutiny ordered a federal investigation of the Watergate scandal. The ordeal blew open a covert operation and cover-up which eventually led to charges bought against members of the Nixon administration for obstructing justice including allegations against the President. This compelling drama traces the activities of Nixon's final days in the office as he and his aids try desperately to repair the damages and clear up all allegations charged. But due to congress' successful investigation which directly implicated Nixon in the cover-up the feat of impeachment forces him to resign. On the night before his resignation the fallen president asks a stunned Henry Kissinger his secretary of state to kneel down beside him and pray. Struggling with mental anguish and helplessness he knew there was no chance to escape his ultimate fate.

  • A Hazard Of Hearts [1987]A Hazard Of Hearts | DVD | (29/07/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

A Hazard of Hearts, dramatised for television in 1987, could hardly be a better demonstration of Barbara Cartland's unique status as the most critically reviled, yet widely read, romantic novelist. The qualities which feed both points of view are present in abundance. There are the certainties of a wafer-thin plot: vulnerable but plucky young heiress falls on hard and tragic times, sails through mortal danger and escapes the clutches of lecherous older man, chastity intact, before claiming enigmatic and devastatingly handsome Lord for her own at the last minute. There are the pantomime characters, atrocious dialogue-by-numbers, set-piece scenes involving duels and smugglers, tight breeches and heaving bosoms. Produced by Lew Grade and the team behind The New Avengers and The Professionals, this is 90 minutes of camp hokum crammed to bursting point with stars clearly having the time of their lives. Helena Bonham Carter, her face like an earnest, worried raisin, is the heroine Serena, with Marcus Gilbert as her paramour. But Diana Rigg's evil Lady Harriet steals the show. To be watched without shame. On the DVD: A Hazard of Hearts is presented in 4:3 video format with a Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack which is splendid for Laurence Johnson's florid themes. The transfer has the appropriately soft-focus look and feel of a 1980s miniseries. The stately home settings certainly provide a sense of quality, but the disc has no extras. --Piers Ford

Born at 50 Wigan Road, Aspull, Greater Manchester on 30th January 1901. Frank was a childhood friend of George Formby and both of them went on to become legends of their time. Frank was just 15 when he first appeared in the theatre as an acrobatic artist (under the name Arthur Twist). It wasn't until 15 years later though that he achieved great popularity as a music hall comedian, whose wild and manic temperament brought a new style of quite risqu, if not downright vulgar comedy to the stage. For ten years Frank Randle ran his own touring company, Randle's Scandals, which played to big audiences all over the country, including headlining Blackpool's distinguished summer-season show. By 1950 he was Britain's highest paid comedian. When You Come Home is Randle's 7th Feature Film. This 1948 Butchers production directed by John Baxter, who was a very sympathetic director with social awareness - Love on the Dole and The Common Touch were good examples, and in this film he brought out another level of Randle's acting ability, other than the usual slapstick. Grandad (Randle) recounts to his grandaughter, his life as a music hall odd job man - a must for all Randle fans.Bonus Short: Randle & All That - Very rare and once thought to be lost, a short variety show of musical and comedy delight, starring Frank Randle who plays an 82 year old cobbler. Also featured are comedy song and dance artists, Arnley and Gloria and the Tumble Duo of Donavon and Byl's.
