| RRP From The Terminator to Titanic, you can always rely on writer-director James Cameron to show you something you've never seen on the big screen before. The guy may not consistently pen the most scintillating dialogue in the world (and, especially in this movie, he doesn't seem to have a particularly high regard for women), but as a director of kinetic, push-the-envelope action sequences, he is in a class by himself. In True Lies, the highlight is a breathtaking third-act jet and car chase through the Florida Keys. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a covert intelligence agent whose wife of 15 years (Jamie Lee Curtis) finally finds out that he's not really a computer salesman and who becomes mixed up in a case involving nuclear arms smuggling. Tom Arnold is surprisingly funny and engaging as Schwarzenegger's longtime spy partner, and Bill Paxton is a smarmy used-car salesman whom Arnold thinks is having an affair with his wife. Purely in terms of spectacular action and high-tech hardware, True Lies is a blast. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com

Stalingrad | DVD | (22/10/2001)
from £6.23
| Saving you £6.76 (108.51%)
| RRP It's tempting to call the harrowing Stalingrad a World War II version of All Quiet on the Western Front, since both films take the perspective of ordinary German soldiers at ground level. Stalingrad surveys the misery of the battle of Stalingrad, the winter siege that cost the lives of almost one and a half million people--Russian defenders and German invaders alike. Not unlike Spielberg's approach to Saving Private Ryan, German director Joseph Vilsmaier rarely steps outside the action to comment on the higher purpose of the war, assuming the audience is aware of the evil of the Nazi regime. Instead, we simply follow a group of soldiers as they endure a series of gut-wrenching episodes, events that have the tang of authenticity and horror. Vilsmaier has a taste for symbolism and surreal touches, which only add to the unsettling sense of insanity this movie conjures up so well. --Robert Horton

| RRP Eureka Entertainment to release NOVEMBER, a hauntingly beautiful and twisted Estonian fairy tale about unrequited love, as part of the MONTAGE PICTURES range in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition on 13 May 2019. One of the most inventive, magical, and also exceedingly funny films of recent international cinema, November evokes influences as varied as Guy Maddin and The Brothers Grimm, Bela Tarr and Jan Å vankmajer, while also remaining wholly and deliriously original. It's unlike anything else you've ever seen and that's even if you've seen a bunch of black-and-white Estonian fairy tale films. Young Lina and Hans are preparing to marry in their village in the woods, when Hans becomes entranced by the arrival of a visiting baroness. Love spells are conjured so that each receives their intended mate, but there are more sinister things afoot. Death can visit in the form of a farm animal...but it's fine because one can hide by wearing trousers on the head. And, besides, the dead can come back to the village and chat anyway...although when the devil arrives, don't try to cheat him. And then there are the kratts supernatural servants made from discarded bones, tree branches, and trash...just make sure to give them work to do, or else. Director Rainer Sarnet's unique, hypnotic, and whimsical film has been a smash at film festivals, and once you fall under its spell, you'll see why. A contemporary film already destined for multiple viewings and passionate cults, November will be haunting your dreams and tickling your funny bone for years to come. Dual Format Features: 1080p presentation on Blu-ray, with a progressive encode on the DVD Uncompressed LPCM 2.0 audio (on Blu-ray) Optional English subtitles Trailer PLUS: A collector's booklet featuring a new essay by film critic and writer Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
Cross Of Iron | DVD | (18/04/2005)
from £8.25
| Saving you £10.00 (143.06%)
| RRP In Cross of Iron Sam Peckinpah weighs in on World War II from the German point of view. The result is as bleak, if not quite as bloody, as one expects from the director of The Wild Bunch, in part because this 1977 film was cut to ribbons by nervous studio executives. The assorted excerpts that remain don't constitute an exhilarating or even an especially thrilling battle epic. The war is grinding to a close, and veterans like James Coburn's Steiner are grimly aware that it's a lost cause. The battlefield is a death trap of sucking mud and barbed wire, and the German generals (viz., the martinet played by James Mason) seem to pose a bigger threat to the life and limbs of Steiner's men than the inexorable enemy. Not even Peckinpah's famous sensuous exuberance when shooting violence is much in evidence; the picture is a depressive, claustrophobically overcast experience. The bloody high (or low) point isn't a shooting; it's a wince-inducing de-penis-tration during oral sex. For a fun time with the men in (Nazi) uniform, try Das Boot instead. --David Chute, Amazon.com

| RRP HE SOUGHT THE ULTIMATE IN HUMAN AGONY... One of the horror giant Mario Bava's biggest hits, Baron Blood returns to the all-stops-out Gothic atmosphere and the central theme of a witch's curse that fuelled his breakthrough film Black Sunday twelve years later. This time, the curse was placed on Baron Otto von Kleist, Austria's legendarily murderous 'Baron Blood', whose corpse is inadvertently revived when an ancient incantation is read out as a joke by a descendant and his girlfriend. Naturally, the Baron decides to carry on where he originally left off, with the help of an entire vault of elaborate torture devices. Jospeh Cotten (Citizen Kane, The Third Man) has a whale of a time as the deceptively charming Baron, and is given sterling support from Elke Sommer (Lisa and the Devil), who is chased through fog-shrouded alleyways in one of Bava's modst memorably atmospheric set-pieces.
